The Office for Women is pleased to announce that applications are open for the 2024 Class of Office for Women Ambassador Program.

The Office for Women Ambassadors is a six-month training program for women and gender diverse individuals who represent the diverse communities across Metro Louisville. Through the program, participants will develop and hone their leadership skills, learn about issues impacting women, and explore government and community programs available to women. The OFW Ambassadors will serve as community liaisons, sharing out information about vital community services and communicating back to government about the needs of women in their communities. Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to and advocacy for improving the lives of women and/or girls and advancing gender equity. Applicants must be 18 or older. Applicants must live in one of the 26 Metro Council districts in Jefferson County (inside Jefferson County). +Applicants must commit to attending all training sessions. The training dates for 2024 are: January 25, February 22, March 28, April 25, May 23 and July 11 and training will take place from approximately 8:30-4:30 each day. The training program is free, and food and transportation costs (bus tickets or parking) will be provided. Childcare will also be provided off site.

Louisville Parks and Recreation annual golf passes

for the 2024 calendar year on sale now

Passes can be purchased online or at parks and recreation sites

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (December 1, 2023) – Louisville Parks and Recreation’s annual golf passes for the 2024 calendar year are now available for purchase in person and online.

The seven-day unlimited play pass, good for unlimited play during weekends and holidays at all ten Louisville Parks and Recreation courses, is $500. A five-day pass (Monday-Friday only) is $425.

The price of annual passes covers green fees for the 2024 calendar year (January 1 – December 31), with a user fee assessed each time a pass is used. Prices vary by course and dynamic pricing may apply during peak playing times.

Annual golf cart passes are also available for purchase and are $75, plus a user fee per pass used. Dynamic pricing may apply at courses during peak operating times for carts as well.

New annual pass holders will be required to visit the golf desk located in the park department’s administrative building, located in Joe Creason Park, across from the Louisville Zoo, for photo identification. However, during the week of Dec. 4-10, golf passes will be sold at Cyril Allgeier Community Center, 4101 Cadillac Court, due to the USA Cyclocross race being held at Joe Creason Park. Those interested may purchase their 2024 pass online here, over the phone by calling (502) 574-PARK (7275), or by visiting the golf desk Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Annual golf passes make a great gift for anyone who loves the game of golf! Those interested in purchasing a pass as a gift may do so by calling (502) 574-PARK (7275). Other Louisville Parks and Recreation divisions offer an abundance of great gifts for the holidays. Jefferson Memorial Forest Riverside, The Farnsley Moremen-Landing and Historic Locust Grove all have gift shops with items that can be enjoyed by all ages, and the Olmsted Parks Conservancy has an online gift shop.

PARC OFFER $3 PARKING THROUGHT DECEMBER

PARC to offer $3 garage parking to downtown Louisville visitors on weekends throughout December

PARC also receives national reaccreditation, joining elite class of parking authorities

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (November 29, 2023) – Retailers aren’t the only ones delivering savings this holiday season. The Parking Authority of River City (PARC) is offering downtown visitors discounted parking rates at its garages during the holiday season. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in December, drivers can enjoy a special daily parking rate of $3 by prepaying for parking at parcdaypass.com.

“I encourage residents and visitors to come see our beautiful downtown lit up this holiday season,” said Mayor Greenberg. “We are thrilled to announce this initiative to make these incredible downtown events even more accessible for everyone in Louisville.”

The program covers the following PARC locations and destinations:

PARC obtains national reaccreditation

PARC is part of an elite class of top parking and mobility organizations following its renewed status as an Accredited Parking Organization (APO). APO is a designation for parking organizations that recognizes best practices in responsible parking management and operations, customer service, professional development, sustainability and access management, safety, data security and risk management, and more.

“I am proud to be a part of an organization that continues to meet best-in-class standards for parking management and operations,” said Mike Tudor, Executive Director, PARC.

To maintain the APO Accreditation, an organization must demonstrate its ongoing commitment to evaluation and improvement by implementing industry best practices. Applicant organizations work with third-party reviewers and must meet more than 100 criteria in 14 categories, in addition to 25 or more required criteria. Organizations apply for reaccreditation every three years, demonstrating their commitment to continue meeting the evolving APO standards.

Families and caregivers urged to look out for lead poisoning potentially connected to recalled cinnamon applesauce pouches

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 1, 2023) — The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) is closely following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) investigation of elevated blood lead levels in children who had reported exposure to certain brands of apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches.

The recalled applesauce pouches include:

• WanaBana brand apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches
• Schnucks brand cinnamon applesauce pouches
• Weis-brand cinnamon applesauce pouches

There have been more than 50 reports, in multiple states, of elevated blood lead levels (BLLs) in people with reported exposure to the recalled products, according to the FDA. To date, there have been no confirmed reports of elevated BLLs linked to the recalled applesauce in Kentucky; however, health officials continue to alert families, caregivers and physicians of the ongoing situation.    

The FDA is asking consumers and retailers not to eat, sell or serve the recalled products and is urging people to properly discard them by carefully emptying the contents into the trash before throwing away the packaging, to prevent anyone from salvaging the recalled products.

“We are aware these are popular snacks children consume and we want everyone in our community who cares for our youngest population to understand the dangers of lead exposure and the signs and symptoms,” said Dr. Kris Bryant, associate medical director at LMPHW and pediatric infectious disease specialist at Norton Children’s. “There are no safe levels of lead in blood. The way to protect kids is to stop the exposure.”

Lead is toxic to humans of any age but protecting children from exposure is especially important because they are more susceptible to the harms of lead. Lead can damage a child’s brain and nervous system and impact their growth, behavior and ability to learn.

Signs of exposure include, but are not limited to: 

• Headache
• Fatigue
• Vomiting and nausea
• Abdominal pain/colic
• Muscle aches, burning, or weakness
• Weight loss
• Constipation
• Irritability and difficulty concentrating
• Tremor

“It’s important to note that many children show no obvious or immediate signs of lead poisoning,” Dr. Bryant said. “If you are concerned that your child has been exposed to lead, contact your child’s healthcare provider about getting a blood test.”

The Louisville Free Public Library is so excited to begin the much-needed renovation and 4,500-square-foot expansion of the Portland Library (architect’s rendering above). The final construction drawings are now complete and the construction manager has released the request for bids to subcontractors. Since it will take several weeks to receive and review the bid responses, the Portland Library will now remain open through the end of September (we will not close on August 31, as previously announced). THE LOUISVILLE ZOO

Louisville Zoo Announces a “Pawsome” New Winter Holiday Event

Adventure through the Louisville Zoo as it launches a new winter holiday event — “Qannik’s Beary Happy Holiday.” Areas of the Zoo will be transformed into a winter wonderland throughout the month of December, providing a unique opportunity to experience the holidays alongside the community’s beloved animal residents.

Families are invited to create memories and celebrate with polar bear Qannik and her animal companions as they enjoy special holiday-themed enrichment activities during the first three weekends of December (2 – 3, 9 – 10, and 16 – 17). Guests can stop by the Zoo’s Gift Shop, December 1 – 17, to write and send a letter to Santa at the North Pole.

The power couple of the season — Santa and Mrs. Claus — will visit with guests when they celebrate the season at the Zoo on December 16 – 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Additionally, holiday elves will have special sweet treats available for purchase this weekend,  including fresh roasted s’mores, hot chocolate and cookie decorating.

To add an extra layer of festive fun, guests can embark on a monthlong scavenger hunt that promises adventure for all ages. Participants who successfully complete at least half of the scavenger hunt will be entered into a drawing for zoo-themed prizes. Guests can join the app-based game by scanning the QR code upon arrival to the Zoo.

Guests who bring at least one non-perishable food item per person may purchase discounted tickets at the Zoo ticket windows for $10 per adult and $7 per child/senior ticket. Twenty-five cents of every admission will also support conservation efforts of the Louisville Zoo.

If the hang up is from a land line or business phone, we will send police to do a welfare check if no one answers on the callback.
• We are able to connect to an interpreter service if caller needs to communication in another language.
• Please remember to have patience when calling for an emergency at a public place or roadway or during a severe weather event . The call volume will increase and call takers will be processing calls as fast and efficiently as they can.
