Clean Hands Up! for National Handwashing Awareness Week
It's that time of year when we’re seeing an increase in the amount of runny noses, coughing, and sneezing at home, at work, and in schools. Louisville Water will help combat those germs by boosting its Clean Hands Up! lessons as part of National Handwashing Awareness Week.
While Louisville Water's educators teach proper handwashing techniques year-round, they use this week as a great opportunity to visit several classrooms in just a few days.
Getting kids in the habit of washing their hands, especially the right way, can be challenging. Clean Hands Up! makes it fun for the kids incorporating a song, “germ” plushies, and glow-in-the-dark lotion as the pretend germs!
Once the classes lather up and wash their hands, it’s time to bring out the blacklight to show the kids how well they did or where they might need to scrub a little harder next time. The kids really get into the lesson, especially the younger ones!
Louisville Water is taking Clean Hands Up! to several other schools this week along with the South Central branch of Louisville Free Public Library and Harbor House of Louisville.
The dashboard is a real-time, comprehensive reporting tool that will expand government transparency and will aim to create more collaborative work opportunities with and within the Louisville community.
The dashboard is a collaborative project between OSHN and the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and was funded with a $100,000 competitive grant from the national Everytown for Safety Support Fund.
The dashboard will use data from Mark 43, LMPD’s record management system and will show a variety of reporting elements. For example, it will show maps and trends on where shots are fired, where homicides and non-fatal shootings happen, literal neighborhood and block reports, and historic, comparative, and detailed data starting from the year 2010.
It will give anonymized information on victims of gun violence, trend reports and provides an array of measurements, including, for example, what is shown as the likeliest or most common times and/or days for violence.
Metro Parks and Recreation has a new Parks Guide. You can find online at the link here. It not only has maps and information about our 124 public parks, but it also includes locations for amenities such as playgrounds, ball fields, pavilions and walking tracks. The interactive map in the middle of the guide also provides locations for community centers.

Annual golf cart passes are also available for purchase and are $75, plus a user fee per pass used. Dynamic pricing may apply at courses during peak operating times for carts as well.
New annual pass holders will be required to visit the golf desk located in the park department’s administrative building, located in Joe Creason Park, across from the Louisville Zoo, for photo identification. However, during the week of Dec. 4-10, golf passes will be sold at Cyril Allgeier Community Center, 4101 Cadillac Court, due to the USA Cyclocross race being held at Joe Creason Park. Other Louisville Parks and Recreation divisions offer an abundance of great gifts for the holidays. SLCM has seen a huge increase in the need for pull-ups and diapers. In response to this need, they are asking everyone to join them in celebrating “Diaper December” by helping them collect as many pull-ups as possible!
Some ways to participate:
Host a party or gathering asking all of your guests to bring diapers (pull-ups preferred)
Collect them as part of your local church or club’s holiday initiative
Challenge co-workers or friends to “match” your donation of diapers to SLCM via social media (be sure to tag SLCM)
Louisville Metro Public Work’s Clean Collaborative initiative has partnered with KYTC District 5, to conduct a litter collection cycle along the interstates within Louisville Metro to help prepare for the holiday season. The work began early last week and will continue through the holiday season. Watch out for the crews in the reflective vests and use caution as you drive near their work areas!
