Hello Neighbors and Friends,
From delightful dishes to all the football and basketball games on television, Thanksgiving Day owes me nothing! I hope you had an enjoyable time with family and friends, too. Today, much like yesterday, the weather is perfect for a stroll around the neighborhood or a walk through the mall. Oh, speaking of mall... tomorrow is Small Business Saturday! At the malls and throughout our city, small businesses are set up and waiting for our support. During this season of giving, we have many opportunities to purchase gifts and goodies for loved ones, colleagues, and friends at retail stores or online. While I'm talking about what I'm talking about, let me suggest another option... Wreaths Across America!
Wreaths Across America is a national organization with a goal to place holiday wreaths on all veterans’ graves at national cemeteries. More than two million volunteers and supporters in all 50 states will assist at 4,000 other locations, including Zachary Taylor on December 16, 2023. The goal this year is to raise funds to place holiday wreaths on all 11,000+ graves at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery. The mission of Wreaths Across America is: Remember the fallen. Honor those that serve. And Teach the next generation about the value of freedom.
In Louisville, Zachary Taylor National Cemetery has 11,000+ graves. Support has grown over the last three years, going from 1,400 wreaths supported to over 5,900 last year. However, over 5,000 graves were left unadorned. A wreath can be sponsored for $17, either online at LouKYWreaths.org or in person at either Brownsboro Hardware & Paint location. The live Maine Balsam Wreaths will be placed during an official ceremony at Zachary Taylor on Saturday, December 16 at 12:00 noon. The public is invited to attend and participate.
The good news, according to the Wreaths Across America organization, is that nearly 4,500 wreaths have been purchased to be placed on veterans’ graves at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery this year. The bad news is that nearly 7,000 more are needed. And the deadline to sponsor a wreath is only one week away.
November 28th is the final day wreaths can be purchased to ensure they are created, shipped and placed on graves during a December 16th ceremony. Since there are more than 11,300 graves at Zachary Taylor, the campaign is only at 40% of its goal.
Wreaths Across America is such a noble cause, so I hope you'll join me in supporting it. Again, to donate online or volunteer, please visit www.LouKYWreaths.org.
Happy Thanks and Giving!

Combating bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other contaminants in our food supply is a high priority for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. And you play an important role in safe food-handling practices at home. The good news is that practicing four basic food safety measures can help prevent foodborne illness.
1. Clean:
The first rule of safe food preparation in the home is to keep everything clean.
2. Separate:
Don't give bacteria the opportunity to spread from one food to another (cross-contamination).
- Keep raw eggs, meat, poultry, seafood, and their juices away from foods that won't be cooked. Take this precaution while shopping in the store, when storing in the refrigerator at home, and while preparing meals.
- Consider using one cutting board only for foods that will be cooked (such as raw meat, poultry, and seafood) and another one for foods that will not be cooked (such as raw fruits and vegetables).
- Keep fruits and vegetables that will be eaten raw separate from other foods such as raw meat, poultry or seafood — and from kitchen utensils used for those products.
- Do not put cooked meat or other food that is ready to eat on an unwashed plate that has held any raw eggs, meat, poultry, seafood, or their juices.
3. Cook:
Food is safely cooked when it reaches a high enough internal temperature to kill harmful bacteria.
4. Chill:
Refrigerate foods quickly because harmful bacteria grow rapidly at room temperature.

On January 1, 2019, a new Comprehensive Plan, called Plan 2040, went into effect. As a resident of District 7 (or any district in Louisville), it is important to review the Comprehensive Plan if you are interested in development that is proposed for the neighborhood. The Comprehensive Plan is the guidepost for all development, and the Planning Commission must use it as one of the guiding principles and tools for making decisions regarding the approval or denial of a neighborhood development project.
Read The Comprehensive Plan (Plan 2040)
The Comprehensive Plan is representative of over 6,000 voices, including Metro staff, an advisory committee, and resident volunteers. The Advisory Committee, made up of diverse representatives from neighborhood and community organizations as well as development and business interests, finalized its recommended goals, objectives, and policies on February 21, 2018.
On April 16, 2018, the Planning Commission recommended the Comprehensive Plan for approval. The document was then reviewed by the Metro Council as well as 12 local municipalities with zoning authority for formal adoption. Those 12 local municipalities are: Anchorage, Douglass Hills, Graymoor-Devondale, Hurstbourne, Indian Hills, Jeffersontown, Lyndon, Middletown, Prospect, Shively, St. Matthews, and St. Regis Park.
