Dear Neighbor,
Next week we will celebrate a National Day of Thanksgiving. Whether you will be here in Louisville or visiting friends and family away, I hope you are able to enjoy the holiday time with those you love.
There are many things we can and should be thankful for in our lives. For me, one of the things I'm most thankful for is the opportunity to serve you and your family as the 26th District representative on the Louisville Metro Council. The work our office does to help improve our neighborhoods, keep our streets safe, support our first responders, and have a broader impact on the Louisville community is important to me. I'm proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to continuing to work together with everyone in District 26.
Have a good weekend,
Brent T. Ackerson 26th District Councilman
Hikes Lane is undergoing a multi-month rehabilitation project, which has largely been completed on schedule. Cleanup and cosmetic work remains. Expect delays and detours as we repair and replace many of the concrete slabs that make up this connective roadway. We will try to keep you updated on closures as we are made aware of them.
IMPORTANT!! - Pay close attention to work plan and detour map to best navigate the area!
There will be no residential garbage, recycling or yard waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, 2023.
Residents who normally have garbage/yard waste collection on Thursday will have service instead on Friday, November 24. The regular Friday collection will be delayed until Saturday, November 25.
To view your collection schedule and stay informed about changes, download the Recycle Coach app or use the app on the Public Works website. Residents outside the Urban Services District who rely on private haulers for garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection should consult those haulers about their holiday collection schedule.
Closings
Staffed recycling centers, the Waste Reduction Center, and the household hazardous waste facility, Haz Bin, will be closed Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24. Leaf drop-off will also not be available those days. All four services will resume on Saturday, November 25.

Louisville is home to more than 53,000 internationally-born residents, representing countries and communities from all over the world. The Louisville Free Public Library's new series Celebrating Our Neighborhood seeks to honor the history and culture of those populations. Programming begins next month with a spotlight on Cuban-Americans, our fastest growing immigrant community. Four free events, including one at the Northeast Regional Library just outside our district, will explore Cuban history, dance, cuisine, and music. Click here to register or for more information.

Mowing over leaves to mulch them back into your lawn is a great option for reducing waste. Mulching not only returns vital nutrients to the soil, but experts say that it can help your grass grow even better the following year!
Never blow leaves into the street! The street sweeping equipment is not built for collecting more than the leaves that naturally fall onto the street. The street sweeper will drive around those piles!

The Louisville Metro Police Department and the traffic guards it employs take their responsibility for the safety of students and pedestrians at their assigned intersections throughout Louisville Metro seriously. Currently, they are below their authorized strength and do not have enough traffic guards to cover all the intersections with a need for traffic control. Furthermore, traffic guards are assigned intersections based upon a contractual bidding process. LMPD communicates with the affected schools and is continuously attempting to hire more traffic guards. If you are interested in becoming a traffic guard, please click on this link: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/louisvilleky/jobs/2941008/traffic-guard-i for information on the application process.
LMAS is extending the waiving of reclamation fees for owned pets, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder the reunification of beloved companions with their families.
Earlier this year, LMAS announced the waiver of reclamation fees for owned pets and the success of reuniting animals with their owners has led to the extension of the program. During the 3-month period, LMAS has reunited 251 dogs and 28 cats with their owners.
LMAS strives to provide compassionate care to both humans and animals. By waiving redemption fees, the shelter is taking concrete action towards addressing inequities and ensuring that pet owners from all walks of life have an equal opportunity to be reunited with their furry friends.
LMAS’ thanks their non-profit partners, Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS) for providing the necessary funding to make the three-month redemption period possible.
Now through the end of the year, owners can reclaim their lost pets without incurring the usual reclamation fees, including boarding charges, vaccinations, and microchipping. The aim is to alleviate the burden on individuals and families who may be facing financial hardship, ensuring that no pet remains separated from its rightful home due to economic disparities.
- Redemption fees will only be waived for pet owners with no previous violations, and cover microchipping, licensing, and vaccination fees.
- Court fees will not be waived.
- LMAS will not keep a pet impounded due to its owner’s inability to pay and will work with owners who have outstanding balances and want to reclaim their pet.
Redemption fees are set by the Louisville Animal Ordinance. Local animal laws also require pets to be licensed, microchipped, and spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter. To view the animal ordinance and a list of redemption fees, visit http://www.louisvilleky.gov/animal-services
Louisville Metro Animal Services encourages pet owners to visit the shelter to reclaim their companion animals, located at 3528 Newburg Rd during regular business hours, Monday-Saturday 12pm-6pm. The shelter's dedicated staff members will be available to guide owners through the reclamation process, providing support and assistance every step of the way.
Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS) supports LMAS and its many life-saving initiatives through fundraising. If you would like to donate to help citizens in need of financial assistance when reclaiming their pet from the LMAS Shelter, visit www.fomaslou.org

Our office routinely publishes information on upcoming public meetings and regarding planning and zoning cases in and around District 26. Our posting in this forum is not an official notice. This list may not be comprehensive nor does it include other zoning matters decided upon by zoning authorities other than Louisville Metro Government.
While we intended to expand the scope of our zoning notices, our office reverted to the former policy of relaying the information we receive from Planning and Zoning. We are limited by ordinance and state law to provide the publicly available information.
