A Message from Andrew

city seal

I want to start with an update on the FitBit Challenge Councilman Reno-Weber and I are co-sponsoring in conjunction with the 5th Division of LMPD.  For a quick review of the contest, the 5th Division officers were challenged to get out of their cars to conduct foot patrols along the main commercial corridors in the 5th Division.  The idea behind the foot patrols is that they promote human interaction and encourage dialogue between LMPD officers and the community.   CM Reno-Weber and I purchased Fitbits for the officers to wear and whichever officer registers the most steps during each week wins a gift card for a meal at a sponsoring restaurant.  The contest began the last week of October and Seargent Dean Sturgeon was the winner of the challenge with 86,000 steps.  The next week, Detective Zach Higdon was our winner with 85,751 steps.  According to Major Jason Grissom, 5th Division officers logged more than 400,000 steps during the second week of the challenge, and he expected them to surpass 1,000,000 steps this week!  Please say hello to one of our officers and thank them for participating in the challenge if you see them conducting a foot patrol in your neighborhood.

Sending a big Thank You to Volare Restaurant on Frankfort Avenue for donating a $100 Gift Card to support the FitBit Challenge!

Now that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has completed the resurfacing and restriping of Frankfort Avenue, I would like us to turn our attention toward a few specific, tangible projects that prioritize pedestrian safety along the Frankfort Avenue corridor.  For example, I have received numerous complaints and suggestions of ways to improve pedestrian accessibility and safety at the intersection of Frankfort and Stilz Avenues in Crescent Hill.  Neighbors have also requested that we focus on improving pedestrian safety and access to the Reservoir Park neighborhood at Frankfort and Blackburn Avenues.  If anyone has any other ideas or specific locations, they think we should focus on for pedestrian accessibility and safety, please contact our office.

On a similar note, after exchanging a series of emails with long time Clifton resident Bill Lieshoff, I want to publicly recommit to the pedestrian safety of all 9th District residents, but more specifically our visually impaired neighbors.  In one of our email exchanges, Bill shared a link to a British Broadcasting Corporation article that describes how the city of Marburg, Germany prides itself on being a “Blindenstadt.”  According to the article a Blindenstadt is “a city adapted to make life for the blind and partially sighted as easy as possible.”  Marburg, the article continues, “owes this reputation and inclusive social structure to a particularly innovative educational institute for the blind, Blindenstudienanstalt.”  Now that is a mouthful.  I have included a link to that article below.

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210916-the-school-that-change-a-city-into-a-place-for-the-blind

Bill pointed out that the American Printing House (APH) and the Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) were established in Louisville long before the school and infrastructure were created in Marburg, Germany that led to its social transformation.  It has simply been a matter of Marburg deciding to be intentional about leveraging that infrastructure and committing to accessibility as part of its “city identity.”

Considering the 9th District already has a sizable population of visually impaired people, and is home to the APH and KSB, it only makes sense to fully embrace the idea of Louisville as a Blindenstadt.  The first step for me is to reach out to my counterparts on the City Council in Marburg, to discuss ideas related to information sharing and other ways that we can learn from one another.  I will keep everyone in the loop as try to move toward fully embracing accessibility for all.

To view your collection schedule and stay informed about changes, download the Recycle Coach app or use the app on the Public Works website. FaLaLa on Frankfort

falalal

FaLaLa on Frankfort is officially less than three weeks away! We're excited to bring this family fun event back to The Avenue for the third year on Saturday, December 2. Enjoy live music, entertainment, and activities at the businesses along Frankfort Ave.

Events include photos with Santa sponsored by The Louisville Water Company at Gelato Gilberto, the Holiday Dog Walk and Pet Contest sponsored by Urban Village Vet Clinic and Crescent Hill Animal Hospital, as well as, the Best Holiday Window Display Contest (formerly known as the Golden Antler Award), and more!

A big part of what makes this day special is what each of the businesses do to participate. Some of our favorites from last year included writing letters to Santa at Kiddo, meet & greats with authors at Carmichael's Bookstore, the holiday sweater party at Pregame Coffee, enjoying gingersnap cookies and cider while shopping at 2023 Mid-Century Modern and tasting the dessert and cocktail specials at many of The Avenues restaurants and bars. We're looking forward to hearing what you will be doing this year to participate! Be sure to email Tori Crisp, tcrisp@prgrealestate.com or Kate Melican, katemelican@yahoo.com, and share your plans so they can be included in promotions.

Please reference the FaLaLa on Frankfort FAQ document here and reach out with questions. We're looking forward to having you involved in this fun day!!

Free Leaf Drop-Off

leaves

Mowing over leaves to mulch them back into your lawn is a great option for reducing waste. Mulching not only returns vital nutrients to the soil, but experts say that it can help your grass grow even better the following year!

Never blow leaves into the street! The street sweeping equipment is not built for collecting more than the leaves that naturally fall onto the street. The street sweeper will drive around those piles!

Leaf Drop-Off Sites

The Metro Public Works free leaf drop-off sites will be open Tuesday-Saturdays, through December 9. Drop-off will not be available on November 23 and 24 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only leaves will be accepted. Leaves can be loose, in paper/compostable bags, or reusable containers. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be taken back by residents.

Locations and hours:

  • Public Works Yard, 10500 Lower River Road (enter from Bethany Lane), Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
