Please be advised that starting September 4, 2023, Metro Public Works contractor, Basham Construction is planning to begin work to replace a culvert on S. Watterson Trail just north of Ferndale Avenue. Associated with this work will be roadway improvements north of the culvert to secure the existing retaining walls and repaving of the roadway within those limits.
Construction is anticipated to last until November 22, 2023. Please notify pertinent parties in your agencies. Below is the planned detour, which will be in place throughout the duration of the project.
Keeping our roadways safe!
Metro Public Works recently completed three separate safety improvement projects along the Westport Road corridor. These projects were born out of the Westport Road Corridor Study (Feb. 2020). To date, Public Works has either begun or completed seven projects listed in that study.
Image below:
- Upper Left – We extended the existing right turn only lane on Westport Road eastbound onto Hurstbourne Lane southbound. We also added a concrete median in front of the Kroger to eliminate dangerous left turn movements across busy traffic patterns.
- Upper Right – Added a right in/right out only concrete island on Lynn Way at Westport Road. We also added ADA-compliant ramp crossings.
- Lower Left – Added a new concrete sidewalk link in front of the Springhurst Shopping Center along Westport Road. We also improved the existing drainage conditions along here.
- Lower Right - Added a new right out only concrete island on Lyndon Lane at Westport Road. We also added ADA-compliant ramp crossings.
The contractor was All-Terrain Paving & Construction. Louisville Metro Inspections Team of Nick Rohrman and Bryan Davis handled all construction inspections.
Due to reconfiguration work on Lexington Rd., East Liberty Street, between Baxter Ave. and Lexington Road will temporarily close from Nov. 27, 2023 to Jan. 2, 2024.
Work schedule is subject to weather conditions, but Metro Public Works contractors plan to start this roadway project on November 27, 2023.

There will be no residential garbage, recycling or yard waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, 2023.
Residents who normally have garbage/yard waste collection on Thursday will have service instead on Friday, November 24. The regular Friday collection will be delayed until Saturday, November 25.
To view your collection schedule and stay informed about changes, download the Recycle Coach app or use the app on the Public Works website. Residents outside the Urban Services District who rely on private haulers for garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection should consult those haulers about their holiday collection schedule.
Closings
Staffed recycling centers, the Waste Reduction Center, and the household hazardous waste facility, Haz Bin, will be closed Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24. Leaf drop-off will also not be available those days. All four services will resume on Saturday, November 25.

Whether you’re pan frying the morning bacon or deep frying the holiday bird, you always have leftover fat, oil or grease. The slippery mess should never be poured into a sink, toilet or storm drain where it can lead to plumbing or sewer problems and clog local waterways.
Fat and grease left over from routine pan frying can be disposed of with other residential garbage if handled properly. Just pour the grease into a container that has a lid, let it cool, and place it in the trash. That keeps it out of local waterways and sewers.
Louisville’s three staffed recycling centers accept household cooking oil left over from deep frying. It’s free and easy for residents of Louisville and Jefferson County. Residents should first let the oil cool, then strain out food particles and pour the oil into a container that has a lid. Take it to the nearest full-service recycling center and hand it to a staff member. The oil is recycled for use in biodiesel fuel. To find a drop-off location near you, go to Louisvilleky.gov/RecycleMap.

Mowing over leaves to mulch them back into your lawn is a great option for reducing waste. Mulching not only returns vital nutrients to the soil, but experts say that it can help your grass grow even better the following year!
Never blow leaves into the street! The street sweeping equipment is not built for collecting more than the leaves that naturally fall onto the street. The street sweeper will drive around those piles!
Leaf Drop-Off Sites
The Metro Public Works free leaf drop-off sites will be open Tuesday-Saturdays, through December 9. Drop-off will not be available on November 23 and 24 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only leaves will be accepted. Leaves can be loose, in paper/compostable bags, or reusable containers. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be taken back by residents.

"Items not found"
Our crews often arrive at an appointment address only to find that someone else already took the items. It's ok - we encourage reuse and keeping items out of the landfill!
But please follow that first step - "Check if your items are usable. Give away or sell usable items instead!" It's easy:
-
Nextdoor offers a FREE option when listing an item for sale. Your neighbors love free stuff!
- Habitat ReStore accepts all kinds of furniture and building materials. Check their website to learn what they accept and how to schedule a pickup.
- Check with your local Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, Catholic Charities, or other thrift store about donations and pickups.
If you need to cancel your appointment, send an email to SWMD@louisvilleky.gov. Include the Service Request number in your subject line. Instructions for cancelling your appointment can be found on your confirmation emails.
