Thanks to everyone who wrote in and contacted our office about street sweeping issues on several streets in the neighborhood last week. We responded immediately by contacting Public Works to see both what had happened and what could be done.
The concerns:
- Neighbors were notified to move cars because of street sweeping that appeared not to have been swept.
- Street sweepers went down the middle of the street, totally avoiding the curbs, many of which had large piles of leaves that were ignored.
What happened:
- First, there was a scheduling error, and several streets received notices but appeared not to have been swept.
- Separately, on streets with a high preponderance of leaves, the street sweepers cannot handle the leaves and do totally avoid them. The perception is reality.
What’s the immediate plan:
- We’re working with Public Works to reschedule the streets that may have been missed.
- We’re putting out immediate communications that outside of incidental leaves that fall directly on the streets, leaf pick up is the responsibility of the homeowner. If we blow or lawnmow leaves onto the street, not only will they not be picked up, but they will inhibit street sweeping.
What’s the long-term plan:
- We’re going to work with Public Works about how they can better communicate the leaf situation for next fall.
- We’re going to investigate what it would cost to get equipment/personnel capable of doing leaf pick up in the future.
- We’re going to keep working with neighborhood associations, parks, and Brightside to plant MORE trees, because this is the best kind of problem we can have. Our office committed to sponsoring more tree planting – so if you want one or more, contact your neighborhood association or our office.
