Dear Louisville, Metropolitan District 3 Family
I have had the pleasure of serving you for the past 9 months. It has been an immeasurable experience full of fun and wild moments on this yet extremely fruitful ride. I want to thank each of you for welcoming my staff and I into your homes, your businesses, and your lives. Each of us wakes up every day with the spirit of humility and public service.
I would like to publicly thank my entire staff who I sincerely love as family starting with my Legislative Aid and future world leader Mr. Trevin Bass. Trevin is a former student at a school I taught in. He was then the chapter president of an organization that I helped sponsor named Seneca’s Men of Quality Youth Mentoring Program. Mentoring has been my life’s work and Trevin is proof that when you invest time into the youth and help them navigate the streams of life, the youth will respond with excellence. I’m so proud of him and the work that we have been able to accomplish. Trevin has set up all my meetings and responded to calls and emails while organizing almost all our events and activities. Thank you so much for your service to our district and our city!
I would also like to thank my Field Coordinator Ms. Donna Johnston. Ms. Johnston has lived in the Southend for many years and knows the area and its people very well. She’s connected to many resources and has been a social worker and public-school educator for many years prior to working for Metro Council. Ms. Johnston ensures that our district’s residents and businesses are following certain ordinances that uplift our district’s etiquette and aesthetic value. I could not ask for a more humble, caring, and grassroots person to be on our ground level helping us interact with other grassroots organizations. Thank you so much for your service to our district and our school systems!
I was able to have an intern named Julia Elizabeth who has been instrumental in many of the city projects that include building more sidewalks, crosswalks, and hiring crossing guards for our Jefferson County Public Schools. We campaigned to have these resources connected to every JCPS school within our district. Elizabeth’s work in identifying areas that did not have proper community to school transportations connections like sidewalks helped the city’s pledge to provide those resources.
We have been able to fix roads, sidewalks, streetlights, and alleyways used by so many of our churches, businesses, and residents. We have been able to give over 250 Kentucky Kingdom passes away this past summer to youth who do not have access to swimming pools. We also held a summer basketball camp in collaboration with the Willenium Foundation Inc project called Shoot Balls Not Guns that was held for two months over the summer break.
This fall we held an educational block party in collaboration with Councilman Philip Baker in District 6 at South Central Park. This was monumental because the city has neglected this area for years. We decided to clean it up and hold an educational block party where local kids could get books, ride horses, pet goats, enjoy music, eat good foods, and learn from local farmers and other entrepreneurs. We wanted to show the youth that education is not only used to obtain jobs but more importantly education is also used to create jobs. We must all find ways to increase the economic prosperity of that area including finding more ways to connect our communities to the resources that it so desperately deserves.
In the short time my office has been able to serve you, we are proud of our efforts to represent your voice. We have passed a resolution in partnership with Councilman Philip Baker and Councilman Jecorey Arthur that urged the metro government to be flexible with employee start times as a response to the JCPS Bus Schedule changes. We hope to pass the anti-displacement ordinance which will ensure that neighborhoods have more voice in how developers operate so that the community can collectively decide how to handle gentrification efforts attached to public dollars.
Democracy itself is nothing without freedom, justice, equity, and representation. So, represent to the fullest because all work starts at the local level. I hope that the next representative will continue to pick up a shovel and plant seeds of love and beauty.
In Solidarity District 3
Sincerely,
Councilman Kumar Rashad
