Louisville is home to more than 53,000 internationally-born residents, representing countries and communities from all over the globe, with more newcomers arriving each day. In the new series Celebrating Our Neighborhood, the Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL), in partnership with Kentucky Refugee Ministries and Americana World Community Center, will celebrate the history and culture of our immigrant and refugee populations. In November, the series will spotlight Cuban Americans, Louisville’s largest and fastest growing immigrant community. Through four free events at LFPL’s regional and Main libraries, programs will explore Cuban history, dance, music, and cuisine.
The History of Cuba: The 1959 Cuban Revolution
Wednesday, November 8, 6:30 pm • Main Library, 301 York St.
University of Kentucky Professor of History and African American and Africana Studies Devyn Benson will explore the precedents, processes, and legacies of the 1959 Cuban Revolution. This program aims to give a better understanding of Cuban history from 1898 to the present, with special attention to the experiences of Black Cubans and their fight against racism.
Join us for a lively evening of dance showcasing the rich and diverse Cuban culture, including salsa, rumba, mambo, and more. Plus, get a chance to learn some steps – no partner or experience required. Just bring your enthusiasm and your dancing shoes.
The Cuisine of Cuba
Wednesday, November 15, 6:30 pm • Northeast Regional, 15 Bellevoir Circle
With its burgeoning Cuban population, Louisville has seen an explosion of Cuban restaurants in the past few years. In this program we’ll learn about Cuban cooking traditions and discover how to make a staple Cuban dish with Sweet Havana Restaurant. There will be a vegetarian-friendly option. Space is limited and registration is required: LFPL.org/OurNeighborhood or (502) 574-1623.
The Music of Cuba
Thursday, November 16, 6:30 pm • South Central Regional, 7300 Jefferson Blvd.

Meals On Wheels Needs Drivers: Can You Help?
Meals On Wheels serves around 30,000 homebound seniors in Louisville, so the need for drivers and volunteers is crucial. With a commitment of a couple of hours per week, you could make a huge difference in the lives of folks who rely on these meals to get through their week.
It’s easy to become a Meals On Wheels driver. All you need is your own transportation and to pass a background check. Most drivers work about 90 minutes, one day per week, although some drivers show extra dedication by volunteering to be substitutes when the regular drivers are out.
Do you have 90 minutes a week to donate to a worthy cause like Meals On Wheels? Can you help feed hungry homebound seniors in your community?
Recently, customers began contacting LG&E and KU to report door-to-door "solar installers" claiming to work for LG&E and KU. The solar installers were using high-pressure sales tactics with the promise of providing "free solar panels" or "free energy" as part of signing up to do business with them. LG&E and KU took prompt action, placing an alert bar with information on the company's website, sending an email to customers, and sharing the information on TV news programs in Louisville and Lexington.
Here are the details to know, along with helpful information you can use with family and friends.
While there are many legitimate solar installers across our service area, please know that LG&E and KU do not market or sell residential rooftop solar panels and are not affiliated with any residential solar installers.
Just as you would do with any significant investment involving your home, we encourage you to always do your homework and secure quotes from several reputable businesses before signing any contract or agreement and making a significant financial investment.
If someone comes to your door claiming to be from LG&E and KU, ask to see the person's company-issued employee or contractor identification card. An authentic ID card will show our company logo, the employee's name and color photograph on the front.
There are many deceptive ways scammers operate. Remember these key points about how we do business and know that LG&E and KU will never do any of the following.
Threaten to cut off your service if you do not make an immediate payment.
Make a live or automated call to demand payment.
Send someone to your home to demand payment.
Ask you for a credit card or debit card number or checking account information.
Ask you to pay with a prepaid debit card or gift card.
Customers who suspect they've been scammed or were targeted by a scammer also can call the police and then let LG&E and KU know by filling out the form at lge-ku.com/report/scam. Visit lge-ku.com/safety/scams for more information.
