Programs Providing Meal Services

The Senior Nutrition Program provides nutritional lunchtime meals to active senior citizens at Congregate Meal Sites and delivers to homebound seniors through the Meals on Wheels Program, throughout the Louisville Metro area. These programs help to improve the lives of older adults by supporting good nutritional health and promoting their independence and well-being.

Congregate and Group Nutrition Sites offer an opportunity for seniors age 60 and older to come to up to 16 neighborhood locations for a nutritious lunch, socialization and activities. Most sites are open from 9am to 1pm Monday through Friday. Please review the current Open Senior Congregate Sites, hours, locations here.

Home delivered meals (Meals on Wheels) are delivered to the homebound elderly from the various nutrition sites. Meals are provided to qualified individuals, age sixty or older, who are homebound due to illness. A staff member conducts an in-home visit to make this assessment. A waiting list is maintained to accommodate the ever-growing need in this community. Those in the greatest physical, social/economic need are given priority as a vacancy becomes available.  Refer a senior to the program by clicking here.

Change Happens When People Get Involved

OSHN’s Reimagine Network is charged with ensuring that assistance and resources are available for concerned, engaged citizens involved in the fight against violence. The Reimagine Network is OSHN’s community mobilization division and is the city’s gateway for where civic-minded neighbors come together to share concerns, address problems, and then work TOGETHER as they take an active role against anything that brings violence to their neighborhood.

We need more citizens to get involved - NOW.

We encourage residents to join a coalition, especially those in the Shawnee, Parkhill, Smoketown, Russell, Newburg and Portland neighborhoods.

Coalitions are small groups of people with powerful reaches because they address issues and inequity through grassroots tactics, networking and ideas.

Such involvement is a strong, collective way to hold leaders accountable for community-driven change.

October is recognized as Depression Awareness Month. Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses in the U.S., affecting more than 21 million adults each year. The illness can complicate other medical conditions and become serious enough to lead to suicide. However, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness’ LIGHT Network made up of mental health providers and organizations, educators, and community members, aspires to illuminate hope in the sea of darkness and improve mental wellbeing for all individuals and families in Jefferson County through education and support.

The network strives to:

• Improve the community’s understanding of mental health and the mind-body connection between mental and physical health.
• Provide education and opportunities for individuals to identify early warning signs of mental illness and subsequently provide programs and an environment that supports recovery and improves resilience for these individuals.
• Assure that those who request information and need mental health care referral will have confidential access to the appropriate information and know how to obtain care.

Led by LMPHW’s Health Program Analyst Jacqueline Love, the network has held life-changing training sessions for participants from a variety of organizations, treatment centers, government agencies, hospitals, and community members. This year, the participants learned QPR, which illustrates the warning signs of suicide and question, persuade, and refer people at risk for suicide for help. Another was Trauma Informed Training, which helps network participants recognize trauma symptoms and understand paths for recovery.

“We understand that mental illness, like physical illness, is a medically treatable condition. It can develop in anyone, it is preventable, and those who experience mental illness can return to good health. As a result, there is no room for stigma in Jefferson County,” Love said. “Our county’s model climate for mental wellbeing is the direct result of a robust collection of support, treatment, and education services that are equally accessible. This portfolio of services continuously evolves to meet the changing needs and priorities of our citizens.”

Clearing the Air: The MSD clAIRity Program

MSD understands that dealing with the odors that naturally occur from wastewater treatment is challenging, and we’re hard at work for the neighborhoods most affected. We want to assure you that we are committed to mitigating these odors and making our communities the best possible places to live.

Through our MSD clAIRity Program, we are investing millions of dollars each year in odor-control measures. This means that we are putting money into making lasting changes to reduce the smells that come from the sewer and the wastewater treatment processes. In fact, we are currently in the process of replacing a number of untrapped catch basins found in parts of the community, including West Louisville.

FLU AND COVID INFORMATION

Is it safe to get a flu vaccine while pregnant?

• Yes, both the CDC and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend any person who is pregnant during the flu season  receive a flu shot, regardless of the trimester.

When should someone receive the flu vaccine if they are pregnant?

• Pregnant people should receive the flu vaccine at the beginning of October which is when flu season usually starts.

What is the risk associated with the flu and being pregnant?

• For those who are pregnant or postpartum, flu is likely to cause severe illness, which could lead to hospitalization for treatment.
• Those who are not vaccinated against the flu are at a higher chance of getting seriously ill.
• Complications related to having the flu can include preterm labor/preterm birth, which is having a baby before 37 weeks.

Can flu vaccination result in miscarriage?

• Multiple studies have shown that people who have received flu shots during pregnancy have not had a higher risk of miscarriage. One of these studies was conducted using CDC’s Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD). The study covered three flu seasons (2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15) looking for any increased risk for miscarriage among pregnant people who had received a flu vaccine during their pregnancy. The study found no increased risk for miscarriage.

What can someone’s partner do to protect their significant other from the flu?

• Partners should also get a yearly flu shot. By choosing to receive the flu vaccine, it will reduce the risk of illness, hospitalization and death to a pregnant partner.
• Wash your hands with soap and water. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
• Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. Sneeze or cough into your shirt sleeve near your elbow.
• If you become sick with any respiratory virus, wear a mask when around your pregnant partner.

Can getting the flu vaccine while pregnant protect a newborn?

• Yes, people who choose to get vaccinated while pregnant and/or breast-feeding will develop antibodies that are shared with their infant.

Now is the time to get your updated COVID-19 vaccination. The new COVID-19 vaccine is designed to respond to the current strains of the virus now in circulation. Residents can schedule an appointment with the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness’ (LMPHW) Immunizations clinic, their health care provider or visit vaccines.gov to stay up to date on their vaccinations.

LMPHW’s Associate Medical Director Dr. Kris Bryant said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone 6 months and older receive an updated vaccine. The updated vaccine targets a variant within the omicron family, she said.

"We are still seeing the omicron variant circulate," Dr. Bryant said. "So, this vaccine is updated to provide the best protection against the COVID variants that are circulating right now."

Here are some other proactive steps you can take to prevent spreading the virus:

• Get vaccinated. To find COVID-19 vaccine locations near you, please search on vaccines.gov or text your ZIP code to 438829.
• Continue practicing hand hygiene.
• Stay home if you are sick.
• Wear a high-quality mask, improve ventilation and keep your distance – when possible – from a person who is sick or has tested positive for COVID-19.

Free at-home test kits are available 

Do you need a COVID-19 test? Beginning Monday, Oct. 2, Metro Parks will have free COVID-19 at-home tests in their community centers. At-home COVID-19 tests can be picked up during any community center’s operating hours while supplies last. Here is a list of community center locations. The tests can be used on anyone 2 years old and older. You can also order four free at-home tests sent to your home. Please visit covid.gov/tests to learn more information.

Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) Announces Extended Waiver of Redemption Fees, Promoting Equity and Easing Economic Hardships

LOUISVILLE, KY (September 14th)- LMAS is extending the waiving of reclamation fees for owned pets, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder the reunification of beloved companions with their families.

Earlier this year, LMAS announced the waiver of reclamation fees for owned pets and the success of reuniting animals with their owners has led to the extension of the program. During the 3-month period, LMAS has reunited 251 dogs and 28 cats with their owners.

LMAS strives to provide compassionate care to both humans and animals. By waiving redemption fees, the shelter is taking concrete action towards addressing inequities and ensuring that pet owners from all walks of life have an equal opportunity to be reunited with their furry friends.

"By extending waived redemption fees for owned pets, we're making it easier for families to reunite with their pets. LMAS ensure that pets remain a cherished part of the family, regardless of financial circumstances. #Yourcityshelter will not have money stand in the way of reunification of people and their pets,” says Director Ashley Book.

LMAS’ thanks their non-profit partners, Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS) for providing the necessary funding to make the three-month redemption period possible.

Now through the end of the year, owners can reclaim their lost pets without incurring the usual reclamation fees, including boarding charges, vaccinations, and microchipping. The aim is to alleviate the burden on individuals and families who may be facing financial hardship, ensuring that no pet remains separated from its rightful home due to economic disparities.

• Redemption fees will only be waived for pet owners with no previous violations, and cover microchipping, licensing, and vaccination fees.
• Court fees will not be waived.
• LMAS will not keep a pet impounded due to its owner’s inability to pay and will work with owners who have outstanding balances and want to reclaim their pet.

New Recycling Drop-Off Location on Aiken Road

Louisville Metro to offer full-time, paid Emergency Medical Technician academy

$8,000 hiring incentive available; Interested applicants should apply by late Oct.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (September 28, 2023) – Louisville Metro Emergency Medical Services (LMEMS) is seeking to train and hire its next wave of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). EMTs are part of the comprehensive EMS response system and have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to treat, stabilize and safely transport patients with various life-threatening emergencies that come through the 911 system.

LMEMS announced today that applications are open for EMT Recruits.

“This academy will provide new recruits with the hands-on training needed to address any medical emergency in the community and provide excellence in pre-hospital medical care. If you’re ready to make a positive impact on someone’s life and their family, becoming an EMT is a great choice,” said Chief Jesse Yarbrough, LMEMS.

After the application period, recruits will be selected to go through a four-month, paid training class. Recruits receive $15.91/hour for the duration of the training. The hiring process includes an information session, written and physical agility testing, a panel interview, and a medical examination. Upon successful certification, EMTs will be granted full-time employment with LMEMS starting at $18.34/hour. Louisville Metro also offers an $8,000 public safety hiring incentive paid in installments upon certification.

No prior experience in emergency medical services is needed. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license, a high school diploma or equivalent and not been convicted of a felony. To be eligible for the class, applicants must also pass a pre-employment drug screening and a polygraph test.

MetroSafe hiring next generation of 911 telecommunicators

$8,000 hiring incentive available upon successful completion of academy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (October 6, 2023) – MetroSafe, the city’s 911 hub, is seeking to train and hire its next generation of 911 Telecommunicators. 911 Call Takers and Dispatchers are the first first responders when an emergency strikes. MetroSafe today announced applications are being accepted for the upcoming training academy.

“911 is the lifeline our residents call when they need help. Our telecommunicators provide lifesaving instruction to those in their darkest hour as well as celebratory milestones like helping deliver a baby,” said Jody Meiman, Executive Director, Louisville Metro Emergency Services.

MetroSafe, along with 911 call centers across the country, is experiencing staffing challenges and anticipating a wave of retirements from telecommunicators who have been dedicated public safety servants for decades.

“Over the past thirty years, I’ve seen the technology and resources evolve to better rapidly get help to residents in need,” said Viola Brown, MetroSafe Dispatcher, who will mark her 30^th anniversary this month. “Having a career in 911 is challenging but fulfilling, and I’m proud to mark this milestone and continue to serve residents and first responders.”

Currently, the center is short dozens of positions. MetroSafe has seven trainees in training who will be added to the current work force upon completion.

In a report released this summer, NENA, the national 9-1-1 Association, cited 82 percent of 911 centers as being understaffed and data showed a growing shortfall in younger workers to replace those who are retiring or burning out.

“We’re seeking quick thinkers who are able to adapt well to rapidly changing situations,” Meiman said. “If you like an exciting, fast-paced environment and work well under pressure, a career in 911 may be for you.”

911 Telecommunications is a public safety position that involves taking critical 911 calls from the public, which includes calls such as cardiac arrests of persons including children and infants, working fires with victims trapped inside, shootings and auto accidents.

After the application period, trainees will be selected to go through a 180-hour, paid training academy held primarily during daytime hours (8 a.m. – 4 p.m.). Trainees receive $22.31/hour for the duration of the training. The hiring process includes a civil service testing, a criminal background check, a panel interview and job shadow, and suitability training. Upon successful completion, trainees will be granted full-time employment with MetroSafe starting at $24.48/hour for Call Takers or $27.25 for Dispatchers and will be paired with a trainer who will instruct and monitor the trainee’s progress.

Louisville Metro offers an $8,000 public safety hiring incentive paid in installments upon hiring. Additionally, MetroSafe trainees and employees have access to an on-staff licensed clinical professional counselor for voluntary trauma-focused therapy and access to a gym with equipment donated by Planet Fitness.

No prior experience in public safety is needed. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or equivalent and not been convicted of a felony. High school seniors who are at least 18 years of age and anticipating graduation in 2023 are welcome to apply. To be eligible for the academy, applicants must also pass a pre-employment drug screening and a polygraph test.

The Louisville Free Public Library is so excited to begin the much-needed renovation and 4,500-square-foot expansion of the Portland Library (architect’s rendering above). The final construction drawings are now complete and the construction manager has released the request for bids to subcontractors. Since it will take several weeks to receive and review the bid responses, the Portland Library will now remain open through the end of September (we will not close on August 31, as previously announced). Louisville Ghost Walk - Tours depart every Friday night at 6:45 p.m. beginning the second weekend in May and continuing until the first weekend in November.  

Louisville Food and History Walking Tour of Nulu - Every Friday and Saturday at 1 p.m.

Whiskey Row Walking Tour - Tours begin in March and are available Thursday through Saturday at 11 a.m. sharp and on Sundays at 1 p.m.

Kentucky Career Center The Kentucky Career Center offers information on unemployment benefits & claims as well as many services for job seekers.

Louisville Urban League Assists clients, primarily African Americans and individuals of low to moderate income, prepare for and find employment.  Services include counseling & placement services, training & development, pre-screening & referral services and outreach programs.

Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs    This site includes information about education and training benefits available to veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Veterans Express   Kentucky Career Center offices have Local Veterans Employment representatives and Disabled Veteran outreach specialists to assist veterans with their employment and training needs.

Center for Accessible Living (CAL)   CAL offers training on disability issues and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ADA compliance, building and product accessibility, reasonable accommodation certification, American Sign Language interpreters, recruitment, career development, a Job Hunt Club and much more. Goodwill Industries of Kentucky   Goodwill provides jobs, job training, and employment counseling for people who face barriers to finding and keeping a job, including people with disabilities, recipients of public assistance, and people with limited education or work history.

Job Corps Job Corps is a free education and training program that helps young people learn a career, earn a high school diploma or GED, and find and keep a good job. For eligible youth at least 16 years of age.  For more information, call (800) 733-JOBS where an operator will refer you to the admissions counselor closest to where you live, and mail you an information packet.

Kentucky Office for the Blind   Services include: braille instruction, orientation and mobility, assistive technology, adult education, career development, life skills, personal development

Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation   Programs and services offered include counseling & guidance, vocational & other training services, interpreter & note taking services, rehabilitation technology, job placement and supported employment.
