TARC has an exciting update to the 2023 Summer Youth Pass. Thanks to a new partnership with Mayor Craig Greenberg and Louisville Metro, youth – and one accompanying adult legal guardian – will now be able to ride transit without cost through August 31.

What is the cost?

What ages can participate in the Summer Youth Pass?

What do I need to participate?

  • Students will need a current, reloadable MyTARC student-ID. Adults will need a MyTarc card and must be with the eligible student at the time they obtain the pass.

Where can I obtain my pass?

  • The Passes may be loaded to MyTarc student-ID cards or regular MyTarc cards (for adults) at TARC Union Station (1000 West Broadway). To be eligible for the pass, adult legal guardians must be with the eligible student at the time they obtain the Companion Pass.

Goodwill's Last Mile to Work

bike

Goodwill’s mission is to help Kentuckians with disabilities or other challenges find and maintain jobs. Because transportation is a major barrier to employment, we match each participant with a rebuilt bike, helmet, safety vest, lights and a lock.  All participants use their bikes to aid in their commutes to work and attend Goodwill classes relating to job retention and financial literacy.  You can take your bike to the Last Mile to Work shop located at 909 East Broadway or to any Goodwill store in the Louisville area and let the donation attendant know it’s for the Last Mile to Work program, and it will be tagged for transportation. For more information, please contact Glenn Todd, Last Mile to Work project coordinator at (502) 585-5221 ext. 2271.

Protect Yourself from Tick-Borne Illnesses

tick

Have you recently been bitten by a tick? If so, you’re not the only one. Though ticks are prevalent all year long in Kentucky, they are much more active during the warmer months. The tiny parasites are more commonly found in wooded, brushy and grassy areas. However, they can be found in your favorite park and even your own backyard.

Ticks can spread diseases to both dogs and people, and can transmit a number of illnesses including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). If you are bitten by a tick, or discover one, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) is asking you to share it with us for identification purposes.

Since the “Spot a Tick and Share Program” launched last year, LMPHW has tested more than 170 ticks. Results are being used to create a map of where ticks are being reported to enhance our education and outreach efforts.

To submit a tick, place it in a small leak-proof container and cover the sample with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. Label the container with your name on it, along with this completed form, and drop off the sample to LMPHW at 400 E. Gray St. Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. To learn more about how to submit a tick properly, click here.

To protect yourself from getting bitten, remember the T-I-C-K rules of thumb:

  • Take precautions and wear insect repellent.
  • Inspect your body for ticks and rashes after being outdoors.
  • Carefully remove the head and body of the tick.
  • Keep monitoring your health for fever, body aches and rashes and seek medical attention if they develop.

For more information about ticks, prevention tips and proper removal, visit LMPHW’s webpage.

Help prevent mosquito bites and breeding grounds

mos

You have likely already heard the buzz informing you that mosquito season is officially here. To protect Jefferson County residents from diseases the pests can carry, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) is out in the community actively treating known breeding grounds, trapping mosquitoes and testing them for diseases such as West Nile virus, St. Louis Encephalitis virus, La Cosse Encephalitis virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus.

Each spring and summer, LMPHW mosquito control experts treat 14,500 catch basins to eliminate mosquito larvae as well as 8,982 miles of swampy areas and large areas of land known to collect standing water. The department also places 148 mosquito traps around the city and county.

To protect you and your family from mosquitoes, remember the three D’s: Drain, Defend, Dress.

Drain: Prevent mosquito breeding grounds by emptying standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, toys, pet water dishes, discarded tires and drain birdbaths on a regular basis.

Defend: Use insect repellents when you go outdoors. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide longer-lasting protection. To optimize safety and effectiveness, repellents should be used according to the label instructions. More information about insect repellents can be found here.

Dress: Wear long sleeves, long pants, socks and closed-toed shoes when outdoors. Avoid perfumes and scented lotions.

To make a complaint about mosquitos in your neighborhood, call Metro Call at 311 or 502-574-5000. To learn more about mosquitoes and ways to prevent mosquito bites, visit our mosquito control and prevention web page.

How Can You Help with Illegal Dumping

dumping

Illegally dumped trash is more than just an eyesore! It is expensive to clean up, it negatively impacts our quality of life and economic development, and the plastic debris may end up in our waterways and oceans. Individuals caught dumping illegally may have their vehicle impounded and face fines and fees totaling about $1,000.

We have recently posted images on social media asking for help identifying illegal dumpers caught on camera and reporting when a vehicle was impounded. WDRB also helped spread the word about the negative impacts of illegal dumping. View their story here

Residents are encouraged to fill out this online form if they witness illegal dumping. The form can also be used to share home security camera footage or images of illegal dumping occurring with our Solid Waste Enforcement Department. Go to Louisvilleky.gov/IllegalDumping to learn more about how you can help prevent illegal dumping.
