District 15 News

New Header

Temperatures around the country are soaring. Death Valley, California could see temperatures in excess of 130 degrees over the next few days which would be the highest temperature ever recorded in the world. While I'm grateful that we don't have temperatures as high as places like Phoenix and Las Vegas, I hope that you have all been keeping cool and enjoying your summer so far.

Aside from rising thermostats, July also means the start of a new fiscal year. Metro Council approved a revised city budget that went into affect on July 1st.

I'm so glad to see the investment in our built environment and natural environment in this budget. By funding long overdue projects related to infrastructure and parks, I hope that you will see our commitment to building a better, safer, and healthier city. Louisville has long struggled with implementation, so I'm ready to get stuff done and watch our city grow--I hope you're ready to help us.

We don't have a full breakdown of every department's budget and the specific projects within them, so it's difficult to identify every dollar that will impact D15, but we wanted to share some of the exciting things that this budget will fund across the district:

  • New spray ground seal at Wyandotte Park
  • Permanent pavilion bathrooms repaired at Wyandotte Park
  • $50,000 for Wayside Park improvements
  • Speed humps on Bradley
  • $20,000 earmarked for D15 residents for Repair Affair
  • $6,000 for new crosswalks at Burnett and Hickory Streets
  • $2 million to implement changes identified in the Preston Corridor Plan
  • $45,000 for the MUSCL Jim King Senior Center
  • $60,000 to YMCA Safe Place- Shelter house
  • $14,000 for CASA of the River Region
  • $84,000 to JCPS for our partnership through Neighborhood Place, South-Central Neighborhood Place

We are still crunching the numbers for our office capital project and neighborhood development funds, including analyzing if entire funds were spent for projects that were previously funded in the District. Through that process, we've identified an additional $56,100 for sidewalk repairs that we can reallocate. This project funds sidewalk repairs in District 15, including but not limited to 508 Warnock, 4027 S 3rd St, 3718 Powell Ave, 3638 Parthenia Ave, 809 Denmark, 512 Beecher St, 704 Brentwood, 3528 Craig Ave, 3743 Kahlert Ave, 3620 Wheeler Ave, and 1008 Thornberry. We tried to keep our sidewalk projects clustered and close to existing Public Works projects and we'll be focusing on other areas next year. I'm beyond excited to start funding some neat projects across the District.

If you're out and about, a couple of cool projects in and around the District to check out are the newly repaved parking lot in Wyandotte Park (trees coming this fall!) and new bump-outs on Central Avenue that will hopefully calm traffic on the busy street.

This will be my 4th year in charge of planning the World Championship Dainty Contest which will be played for the 53rd time this year. The Dainty Contest, held on the last Monday in July, is accompanied by the Dainty Fest, a weekend full of festivities in Schnitzelburg to celebrate our time honored tradition. I hope you can join us July 29-31! More info below.

I'll be playing in the 33rd Annual Brightside & Coca-Cola Volleyball Classic tomorrow at Seneca Park at 10 am if you want to come cheer on the Metro Council team as we take on the Mayor's team.

See you around D15,

Jennifer Signature Smaller
