A Message from Andrew

seal

Many of you know that 2023 has been a very bittersweet time for me and my family.  On the one hand, I have had the honor of beginning to serve the 9th District on Metro Council and have loved every minute of that work since I was sworn in on January 3rd.  On the other hand, my mom was diagnosed with a terminal illness shortly after the swearing in ceremony and very recently passed away.  In a way, you could argue that the timing of these two events could not have been more incongruous.  Just as I was taking my first steps into public service and learning the ropes of Metro government, I was facing the most difficult emotional challenge of my life and was needed more than ever by my family.  On the other hand, diving head long into this critically important work, has also offered a welcome distraction and has been personally fulfilling in ways I could never have imagined. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the 9th District for the grace and patience you have shown to me and my family over the past six months as we have processed these life changes and as we begin the long, slow process of grieving and healing after Mom’s death.  Our love for and commitment to the people of this district and Metro Louisville has only been strengthened during this challenging time.

Beargrass Preserve Public Meeting

Join the Olmsted Parks Conservancy at the first public meeting for the Beargrass Preserve Master Plan. At the meeting, you can:

  • Explore the future site of Beargrass Preserve.
  • Learn about the site’s history and the project team’s current progress.
  • Tell us about your ideas for the design of the park.
  • Enjoy refreshments! Big Mike’s Shaved Ice will be available from 4pm to 6pm. The first 50 cones are on us!

Meeting Date: Thursday, June 22nd

Time: 3:30 to 6:30pm

Location: 1301 Landrum Lane

(In case of rain, the meeting will be held on Saturday, June 24th from 3:30 to 6:30pm)

Enter at Barr Lane, park at the rear of the Schelgel Hall parking lot, and use Landrum Ln to walk to the meeting location.

The Master Plan: Olmsted Parks Conservancy is developing a master plan for its newest park, Beargrass Preserve. For years, this property was part of the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary’s campus. Now, the dedication of Beargrass Preserve brings with it an unprecedented opportunity. Not only will this park be the first major extension to Cherokee Park since it was originally completed, but it also offers an opportunity to fulfill Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision for Louisville’s park system.

Two Week Closure of I-64 East Scheduled to Begin Friday, June 16th

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists all lanes on a section of Interstate 64 East in Jefferson County will be closed beginning this week for crews to make improvements to the roadway. The closure will start from the I-64/I-71 split downtown and continue to I-264/Watterson Expressway. I-64 East will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday, June 16, to 6 a.m. Friday, July 1.

Traffic impacts: Traffic will be diverted from I-64 West to I-71 North.

The following ramps will be closed entering or exiting from I-64 East:

  • Story Avenue
  • Mellwood Avenue
  • Grinstead Avenue
  • Cannons Lane

This project includes asphalt pavement milling and resurfacing, and replacing guardrails. The concrete pavement in the Cochran Tunnel will be removed and replaced with new asphalt. In addition, the bridge deck over Beals Branch Road (mile point 8.55) will be removed and replaced with concrete. This project will extend the life of the interstate and will improve driver comfort on the roadway. The last rehabilitation project of I-64 was completed in 2001.

Signs notifying drivers of the upcoming work and detour route will be placed in the area. Motorists should adjust for increased travel times and expect delays while traveling the detour route. Signed detour route (depending on destination):  I-71 North to I-264 West, then reconnect to I-64 East.

Project and contract award details are available here.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Visit goky.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. You can also get traffic information for the District 5 counties at facebook.com/KYTCDistrict5 and twitter.com/KYTCDistrict5.

Cherokee Park Bridge

We have recently received inquiries about the Cherokee Park bridge, and wanted to update everyone on the project.  When the contractor mobilized and began work, the structure was found to be too deteriorated to reuse the existing abutments so KYTC had to pivot to a full replacement. This triggered new hydraulic analysis, Geotechnical work and a new bridge design. Since the structure changed to a replacement instead of a renovation, KYTC also had to apply for an MSD permit because they have jurisdiction over Beargrass Creek. This permit was not needed for just the original superstructure replacement.

KYTC is working through all these new items. We anticipate that the contractor will be able to restart work around June 19th.

AntiRacism Challenge

ARC

It’s time again for the free, 4-week, citywide Anti Racism Challenge, sponsored by listenlearnact.org, Metro Lean Into Louisville, and the Earth and Spirit Center. It begins July 1st.

This is how it works -- each week during July, participants will receive an email with a list of 10-12 anti-racism activities. These range from reading an article, calling an elected official, making a donation, watching a film or viewing an exhibit by Black artists, patronizing a Black business, etc. We ask participants to choose and complete 3 of the listed activities. The purpose is to keep us all focused and active in challenging racism in our daily lives. This is a personal Challenge -- no one needs to report back to us. If participants are interested, they simply provide their email address (we never share anyone's information) and that puts them on the list to receive our ARC email each week. Here is the link to sign up: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/gYgTGac/listenlearnact

Crime Tips from Major Grissom

major grissom

Anyone that has heard me speak knows, I will emphasize one tip above all others: LOCK YOUR DOORS! The single most common crime in the 5th Division is Theft from Vehicles. In the past 2 weeks, 15 of the 17 theft from vehicles involved an unlocked door. Thieves thrive on easy targets and an unlocked door is an invitation to theft. Locking your car doors drastically decreases the chance you will be victimized.
