A Message From Andrew

city seal

The rapid proliferation of Short-Term rentals (STR’s) in District 9 and our other historic, urban neighborhoods continues.  At the end of last year, Metro Council passed a resolution requesting the Metro Planning Commission to take a fresh look at the Land Development Code and Code of Ordinances that govern Short-Term rentals (STR’s) and to make recommendations to update requirements and to close loopholes that have become increasingly apparent and problematic since the current codes and ordinances were adopted.  While the report has yet to be finalized, we are aware of a number of the recommendations that are forthcoming.  All of the proposed changes are positive ones and will improve the situation.  However, after hearing from many district 9 constituents and reading extensively about the steps cities across the country and around the globe are taking to stop and reverse some of the negative impacts of too many STR’s in their communities, I have requested that the proposals go further, particularly as it relates to the penalties that owners/hosts face if they intentionally disregard or circumvent the rules of the road or are regularly referred to the Department of Codes and Enforcement for disturbances or other issues.  In concert with Council colleagues whose districts are disproportionately impacted by the STR phenomenon (Districts 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 15), Councilman Jecorey Arthur has sponsored an ordinance that proposes a 180-day moratorium on new STR permits until Metro Council can debate and hopefully incorporate updated rules and recommendations.  Whether or not the ordinance passes we need to make sure we have the time and space to ensure we are being thoughtful about how we let this burgeoning industry operate in our community.  Please provide your feedback by clicking the following link: https://louisvilleky.gov/government/planning-design/short-term-rental-regulation-update-2023

2023 Short Term Rental Regulation Update

Metro Council has directed Planning & Design Services and the Planning Commission to review the local ordinances concerning short-term rentals (STRs) and recommend improvements. The STR regulations were first adopted in 2016 and last updated in 2019. The recommended improvements address community feedback received since the 2019 update and issues encountered in administering the regulations.

We want to hear from you! Review the potential changes and provide your comments at: https://louisvilleky.gov/government/planning-design/short-term-rental-regulation-update-2023

The recommendations provided on this webpage are preliminary and subject to change upon review of additional public input. To be effective, any changes must be approved by Metro Council. The public comment period will remain open until the Planning Commission public hearing.

Learn more about the existing regulations and view an interactive map of STRs: https://louisvilleky.gov/government/planning-design/short-term-rental-information

kNOw Waste: Host an Eco-Friendly Cookout

Summer is here and it’s time for backyard barbecues and cookouts! But how does your gathering measure up when it comes to waste?  Get ready for hosting your family and friends with these 4 tips:

  1. Use reusable dishes and utensils. One of the main parts of waste at cookouts is disposable plates and cups. It will require a little more cleanup, but avoiding disposable items goes a long way! It'll save money too!
  2. Avoid food waste. Before your next gathering, note how many people are coming and what they prefer to eat. Try using savethefood.com’s Guestimator tool to help with your planning! Encourage guests to take home leftovers.
  3. Provide tap water instead of bottled water. Drinking water is essential at a cookout, but instead of buying bottled water, try providing reusable cups instead. Use a water cooler with a dispenser for refills.
  4. Make recycling easy for your guests. Provide side-by-side trash and recycling containers that are clearly marked. Create a sign to remind your guests what items are recyclable. Empty cans, bottles, paper cups, and paper plates would all be acceptable. Make sure all food goes in the trash.

Follow @KnowWasteLou on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for weekly recycling tips and information!
