Louisville’s mass shooting follows the grim, familiar pattern of national shootings. According to data from Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization focused on greater gun control, between 2015 and 2022, over 19,000 people were killed or wounded in the United States in a mass shooting.
Research also shows that the negative effects of mass shootings spread farther than previously understood. It even harms the health of residents not directly touched by violence because community violence can shatter a sense of safety that we all often take for granted for ourselves and our families. So mass shootings can lead to higher rates of depression and anxiety and a higher risk of suicide among young people.

The Office for Women is supporting St. Bernadette’s Diaper Bank this year for Mayor’s Give A Day. The Diaper Bank provides diapers to organizations across Louisville who then distribute them to families in need. Their highest need is for pull-up diapers and larger sizes (4-5). Contact OFW's Gretchen Hunt or Louisville's Diaper Bank at St. Bernadette's for more information.
One hour of mowing with a typical gas-powered lawnmower produces the same amount of air pollution as driving your car for 200 miles—enough to go from Louisville to Nashville. These emissions create pollution that is harmful to sensitive groups like children, elderly adults, and people with conditions like asthma.
The Lawn Care for Cleaner Air program encourages Louisville Metro residents to improve air quality by offering rebates when residents convert to lower-emitting equipment. Learn more about the program in the 2022 LCCA Annual Report.
If you're a non-profit organization in Louisville/Jefferson County, you can apply to be awarded a new set of electric lawn equipment through our Lawn Care for Cleaner Air Community Equipment Grant Program. The most recent round of applications has closed and a recipient will be announced soon. The next round of applications should open sometime this spring.
If you have questions about the rebates or the equipment grant, click here to email or call (502) 574-6000. The only thing more effective than replacing your equipment is replacing your lawn. If you're interested, check out our Grow More Mow Less program.
The Internal Revenue Service has announced that nearly 1.5 million people across the nation have unclaimed refunds for tax year 2019. The IRS estimates almost $1.5 billion in refunds remain unclaimed because people haven't filed their 2019 tax returns yet. The 2019 tax returns came due during the pandemic, and many people may have overlooked or forgotten about these refunds. But time is running out! The deadline to file returns is July 17th. On January 1, 2019, a new Comprehensive Plan, called Plan 2040, went into effect. As a resident of District 7 (or any district in Louisville), it is important to review the Comprehensive Plan if you are interested in development that is proposed for the neighborhood. The Comprehensive Plan is the guidepost for all development, and the Planning Commission must use it as one of the guiding principles and tools for making decisions regarding the approval or denial of a neighborhood development project.
Read The Comprehensive Plan (Plan 2040)
The Comprehensive Plan is representative of over 6,000 voices, including Metro staff, an advisory committee, and resident volunteers. The Advisory Committee, made up of diverse representatives from neighborhood and community organizations as well as development and business interests, finalized its recommended goals, objectives, and policies on February 21, 2018.
On April 16, 2018, the Planning Commission recommended the Comprehensive Plan for approval. The document was then reviewed by the Metro Council as well as 12 local municipalities with zoning authority for formal adoption. Those 12 local municipalities are: Anchorage, Douglass Hills, Graymoor-Devondale, Hurstbourne, Indian Hills, Jeffersontown, Lyndon, Middletown, Prospect, Shively, St. Matthews, and St. Regis Park.
