Air Pollution Control District Kicks off 20th Year of Lawn Care for Cleaner Air Program

Mayor Greenberg joined the APCD to highlight rebates on low-emission equipment for residents and award equipment to Youthbuild Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 28, 2023) —¬ This morning Mayor Craig Greenberg joined leaders from the Air Pollution Control District to kick off the 20th full year of the Lawn Care for Cleaner Air rebate program and present a package of electric lawn equipment to YouthBuild Louisville.

The Lawn Care for Cleaner Air rebate program incentivizes the purchase and use of lower-emitting lawn equipment by offering rebates for Louisville residents and businesses that purchase eligible equipment, and even larger rebates for those that also recycle their old gas-powered equipment.

The switch from gasoline to electric-powered lawn engines improves local air quality and reduces emissions that contribute to climate change. There are over 71,000 mowable acres of land in Louisville, and approximately 20.5 million pounds of air pollution is produced each year operating gas-powered equipment to maintain that land. Since Lawn Care for Cleaner Air’s inception in 2003, the program has issued over 12,000 total rebates, keeping nearly five million pounds of pollution from Louisville’s air.

“If you are looking to make a positive environmental impact, switching to electric lawn equipment is an excellent place to start,” said Rachael Hamilton, Director, Air Pollution Control District. “It is an affordable investment that has a meaningful impact on harmful emissions.”

YouthBuild Louisville was awarded a package of electric lawn equipment through Lawn Care for Cleaner Air’s Community Equipment Grant. The grant aims to expand and encourage the use of cleaner, more sustainable equipment while supporting the maintenance needs of non-profit organizations in Louisville.

YouthBuild Louisville is an education, job training, and leadership program that provides low-income young adults, ages 18-24, opportunities to realize their potential as active community leaders and an educated workforce for Louisville. Their Urban Conservation Corps, which will utilize the equipment to maintain their grounds, is a team of AmeriCorps members who learn green jobs skills through community service, environmental education, and hands-on job training experiences.

Rebates on eligible equipment are available year-round. The equipment grant is awarded annually. The next round of applications will open in the fall to be awarded in the 2024 season. The Air Pollution Control District works to improve air quality in Louisville through implementing the federal Clean Air Act and other local programs and regulations. Responsibilities of the District include issuing and enforcing permits for sources of air pollution, monitoring the ambient air to ensure that it meets federal air quality standards, and investigating and addressing community reports of air quality issues.
