Special Discussion: Louisville Water Update - Vince Guenthne, Kelley Dearing and Chris Bobay, Louisville Water Company

On Thursday, committee members received an update from the Louisville Water Company on the condition of our tap water. As your councilman, it is important that I do everything I can to ensure transparency so that our community can stay informed and prepared. After yesterday's discussion I am confident that the Water Company has done everything possible to ensure our drinking water is safe.  Click here to view discussion.

Metro Council honors twenty-six individuals for Black History Month

During the 21^st annual Black History Month Program

Louisville (February 24, 2023) – The Louisville Metro Council hosted the 21st Annual Black History Month Program yesterday during a special meeting of the Equity, Community Affairs, Housing, Health & Education Committee, chaired by Councilwoman Dr. Barbara Shanklin (D-2).

“Reaffirming our Diverse Culture” is the theme for this year’s program. During the event, each of the twenty-six Metro Council members honored an individual with an award for his or her achievements.

“I’m honored to continue hosting this annual program for the Louisville Metro Council,” said Chair Councilwoman Shanklin. “February is a special month to celebrate Black History and thank dedicated community members in each of our districts for making an impact.”

“I always look forward to this celebration and the opportunity it provides us to celebrate the accomplishments and service of many of our neighborhood leaders,” said Vice Chair Councilman Stuart Benson (R-20).

Renshoku Ramen moving into the former Barry's Cheesesteaks in Old Louisville

Source: Louisville Business First The owners of a ramen pop-up business are planning to open their first brick-and-mortar location in Old Louisville later this spring. Nick and Nicole Robey, owners of Renshoku Ramen, plan to open a restaurant at 1161 S. Second St. in May. The nearly 1,600-square-foot space was previously occupied by Barry’s Cheesesteaks, which recently moved to 5408 Valley Station Road in Valley Station. “I've spent a lot of time in the Old Louisville area," Nicole explained. "It's just a great place to open a ramen shop. It's close to college campuses, Downtown Louisville, the original Highlands and Germantown. So, when the opportunity came at Barry's, we had to take it. We still have some cleaning and renovations to do to make the space what we need, but we're hoping to have it together by May." Barry Washington, the owner of Barry’s Cheesesteaks, is planning to open a new chicken and fish concept called Papa B’s Chicken and Fish next door to Renshoku Ramen. Both restaurants are in a property owned by Bedford, New York-based Parets Investments LLC, according to Jefferson County Property Valuation Administrator records. ONE WEEK LEFT TO APPLY! The Louisville Sustainability Council’s Community Grant Program offers grants to support innovative, entrepreneurial projects and programs to plan for the impact of climate change on our most vulnerable citizens, while supporting community equity and resilience.Recipients will receive between $500 and $5,000 toward their project and will have access to LSC events, programs, mentors and the opportunity to partner their work with the LSC initiatives.Application Requirements:·     Anyone in the Louisville Metro area may apply, including individuals, institutions, businesses, and non-profit organizations. Presenting the Bingham Fellows Class of 2022 Project Outcomes

Every year, the Leadership Louisville Center seeks to address the most pertinent issue facing our city through our Bingham Fellows program. The class of 2022 was posed with the opportunity to leverage the dramatic changes the city has faced to adapt and reinvent downtown. How do we use what the past three years have taught us, the gaps it has uncovered, and the changes it has caused to redefine what downtown can be and do for Louisville? How can we create a more vibrant, resilient, and equitable urban core?

The answers to these questions lead to three initiatives. These projects seek to spur downtown’s resurgence – not to the same downtown that we were pre-pandemic, but to a reimagined downtown that best serves today’s needs and desires in a more welcoming and inclusive way. They accomplish the following:  

• Turning spaces into places through strategic activation of underutilized sidewalks, plazas, and outdoor spaces (CitySpots)
• A guide for making our neighborhoods art and cultural destinations (LouMoment Maker)

Jumpstarting economic value creation for small Black-owned merchants (MELANnaire Marketplace)

Junk and Bulk Trash Disposal

Large Household Items Jefferson County residents may drop off up to three large household items at the Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue for FREE. (Examples: appliance, mattress, sofa, etc.) Hours: Tuesday - Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Curbside Collection If you live outside of the Urban Services District, contact your waste hauler for information about large item collection. If you live in our Neighborhood Cleanliness Pilot area in Smoketown/Shelby Park, use the scheduling system.

First Division

Major Shannon Lauder Major Shannon Lauder joined the Louisville Metro Police Department in 2008. She served as a patrol officer in the 4th Division, primarily in the Old Louisville neighborhood. She also spent 6 years as a hostage negotiator and team leader for LMPD’s Hostage Negotiation Team. She was a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit (CACU) investigating physical, sexual and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. She was then promoted to sergeant in 2015, where she served in the 6th Division before becoming a Professional Standards Unit investigator. She was promoted to lieutenant in 2018 and served as a patrol lieutenant in the 4th Division. Most recently she was assigned as the Commander of the Special Victims Unit. The SVU consists of the Sex Crimes Unit, the Domestic Violence Unit and the Crimes Against Seniors Unit. In 2020 Major Lauder was promoted to the rank of Major and serves as the Commander of the 4th Division. Major Lauder holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Political Science from the University of Kentucky and is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. She is a graduate of the 143rd Session of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville. Major Russell Miller I wanted to take the time to introduce myself to everyone as I am the new Major of the 2nd Division. I have been with LMPD for 22 years and served the community in various positions and divisions throughout my career. After recently being promoted,  I was fortunate enough to have been presented with the opportunity to return and command the 2nd Division.  For the previous 5.5yrs I had been the Lieutenant in the 2nd Division, so I am very familiar with the Division and very excited to continue to be apart of the community here. My goals will be to provide strong and effective leadership for the officers and to the members of the community. My team and I will lead officers to provide quality and professional service and response to every citizen, to continue working hard to reduce crime within the community and to partner with community members so together we can advance quality of life issues. Major Tiffany Tatum  Major Tiffany Tatum is a 23 year veteran of LMPD. She began her career with the former Louisville Division of Police in 1998. She patrolled in the 1st and 4th divisions. In 2016, she was promoted to sergeant and worked in the 2nd and 4th divisions before being appointed to the Professional Standards Unit. In 2019, she was promoted to lieutenant and was appointed to Special Investigations Unit until transferring to the 1st division. She was recently promoted to Major in the 4th division.
