Dr. Robert L. Douglas was born in Louisville, Kentucky on August 3, 1934 to Ura and Inez (Dawson) Douglas. He passed from this life on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Jewish Hospital. He was 88 years old. He grew up in his beloved Smoketown neighborhood with his eight brothers and sisters, all of whom pre-deceased him: Hazel (Reed); Susie (Jones); Dorothy (Anderson); Charlotte (Miller); Janet (Woodard); Ura, John, and Charles Douglas. His beloved nice, Eunice Easton, who survives him, was also a member of his childhood household. Dr. Douglas was the father of eight children: Madonna Clark; Robrina Davis; Sonya Burke; Ava; Robert Jr.; Mitchell; Dara, and Dr. Camara Douglas, all of whom remain to mourn his passing. He was a grandfather to sixteen grandchildren: Martina, Shannon, Christopher, and Douglas McElroy; Mikell Johnson; Nicole Douglas; Kenton and Keenen Burke; Anja, Ayanna, and Antonia Taylor; Mitchell, Nia, Camaya and Camara Douglas, Jr., and Ra’Miyah Sims. He is survived by twenty one great grandchildren. His devoted wife of forty four years, Laura (Green) Douglas, also survives him. Dr. Douglas graduated from Central High School in 1953. He went on to receive his B.S. from the University of Louisville in 1963 in Fine Arts. He earned his Masters degree from the University of Iowa in American Studies with an emphasis in Pan African Studies in 1981. In 1983 he earned his PhD in the same discipline, studying under Dr. Darwin Turner, renowned Pan Africanist . Soon after, he accepted a post as an Assistant Professor in the Pan African Studies Department at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. In 1985, Dr. Douglas returned to Louisville to accept a joint appointment as Assistant Professor in both the Department of Pan African Studies and in Art History at the University of Louisville. Dr. Douglas served as chair of the Department of Pan African Studies at the University of Louisville from July, 1989 to June, 1995. In 1991, he helped to create the Pan African Institute for teachers at the University of Louisville, a two week summer institute for Jefferson County Public School teachers aimed at supporting multi-culturalism. He served as a member of the conference planning committee for the Black Family Conference at U of L from 1986 – 2000. In addition, he served as the curator for a number of traveling art exhibitions including: African American Contemporary Art at the Gibellina Museo Civico D’Arte Contemporanea, Universita Di Palermo Sicily in 1990 which included works by Jeff Donaldson, Wadsworth Jerrell, and David Hammons. He was appointed by the Governor to serve two terms on the Kentucky African American Heritage Commission. Dr. Douglas is also the author of numerous scholarly articles, exhibition catalogs, and two books which focus on African American art and poetry. He had a spirit of adventure which caused him to enjoy traveling throughout the world including trips to France, Spain, Switzerland, West Africa, Northern Africa, Egypt, and India. While he was an accomplished researcher and scholar, what he enjoyed most was interacting with his students in the classroom. At the time of his passing, he was a Professor Emeritus at the University of Louisville. Services are entrusted to A. D. Porter & Sons Funeral Home. The wake will take place on Thursday, February 16 th at St. Stephen Church from 6PM to 8PM. The funeral service will take place at the church on Friday, February 17 th at 1 PM. Burial will occur at Green Meadows Memorial Cemetary. Dr. Douglas was a strong proponent of multicultural education. Therefore, his family is requesting that expressions of sympathy include contributions to Simmons College of Kentucky and the Department of Pan African Studies at the University of Louisville in his honor. February Networking Night

Violence Prevention Training - Presented By The Office For Safe & Healthy Neighborhoods - In Partnership With Whitney Strong

The One Love Louisville Ambassador Training is a free, in-person training scheduled for March 11th, 2023.  Based off our current lineup of presenters, we will meet from 9:00am-2:00pm at Shawnee Baptist Church, located at 2214 Bank Street, 40212, and lunch will be served.  We will hear from experts as they cover a range of topics including Firearm Safety, spot suicide with Question Persuade Refer (QPR), Stop the Bleed, and The Public Health Approach to Violence.  This training, which has been attended by over 800 people since its inception in 2017, aims to inform participants of individual and collective efforts to reduce violence in Louisville. For many of our participants, this is a gateway to get involved with our office, and our wonderful partner organizations working to curb violence in our community.  If you have ever wanted to get plugged in to this work, the Ambassador Training is a great place to start. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/violence-prevention-ambassador-training-with-whitney-strong-tickets-526582160417

Louisville Water does not expect a chemical spill to impact the quality of the community’s drinking water

Public health is at the core of what we do. Based on the current data, we do not believe the spill on the Ohio River in northeast Ohio poses a risk to the quality of our drinking water. Your water is safe to drink.

The spill happened after a train derailed on February 3 in East Palestine, Ohio, near the Pennsylvania border. Some of the train cars were carrying chemicals, and low levels of butyl acrylate reached the Ohio River through a small tributary. This chemical is used to produce plastics and resins. The spill happened hundreds of miles from Louisville, but we’re part of a network of water utilities that constantly monitor the Ohio River and the tributaries that feed into the river. That means we knew about the spill soon after it happened and our scientists got to work, looking at how we’d detect the chemical and how we’d handle it in our treatment process.

Over the past few days, our scientists have looked at the size and location of the spill and calculated the travel time of the spill plume to Louisville. This is an advantage of the Ohio River, its size helps with diluting a spill, making it easier to treat. We’re also looking at how we treat the spill if the plume reaches Louisville. We know that trace amounts of this chemical can impart minor odors to the water, but through conventional treatment and the use of powdered activated carbon, we can minimize any taste and odor concerns.

Every day, we work to protect the safety of your drinking water. Louisville Water operates an EPA-certified laboratory, and our scientists do an average of 200 tests daily on our drinking water. We’re also part of a partnership that includes the drinking water utilities that rely on the Ohio River as well as the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) and state and federal regulatory partners. ORSANCO has a detection system that is located along the entire 981 miles of the Ohio River where utilities and industry use sophisticated instruments to analyze for chemicals that may spill into the river.

We will continue to monitor and update our response strategy as we learn more.

Major Shannon Lauder

Major Shannon Lauder joined the Louisville Metro Police Department in 2008. She served as a patrol officer in the 4^th Division, primarily in the Old Louisville neighborhood. She also spent 6 years as a hostage negotiator and team leader for LMPD’s Hostage Negotiation Team. She was a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit (CACU) investigating physical, sexual and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro.

She was then promoted to sergeant in 2015, where she served in the 6^th Division before becoming a Professional Standards Unit investigator. She was promoted to lieutenant in 2018 and served as a patrol lieutenant in the 4^th Division. Most recently she was assigned as the Commander of the Special Victims Unit. The SVU consists of the Sex Crimes Unit, the Domestic Violence Unit and the Crimes Against Seniors Unit. In 2020 Major Lauder was promoted to the rank of Major and serves as the Commander of the 4^th Division.

Major Lauder holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Political Science from the University of Kentucky and is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. She is a graduate of the 143rd Session of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville.

Major Russell Miller

I wanted to take the time to introduce myself to everyone as I am the new Major of the 2^nd Division. I have been with LMPD for 22 years and served the community in various positions and divisions throughout my career. After recently being promoted,  I was fortunate enough to have been presented with the opportunity to return and command the 2^nd Division.  For the previous 5.5yrs I had been the Lieutenant in the 2^nd Division, so I am very familiar with the Division and very excited to continue to be apart of the community here. My goals will be to provide strong and effective leadership for the officers and to the members of the community. My team and I will lead officers to provide quality and professional service and response to every citizen, to continue working hard to reduce crime within the community and to partner with community members so together we can advance quality of life issues.
