VITA Tax Preparation Sites Taking Appointments For Free Services To Those Who Meet The Requirements

a

The Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA, provides trained, IRS-certified volunteers who offer free tax services at 11 sites across the city. VITA is available to individuals and families who earned less than $66,000 in 2022.

VITA volunteers will also help determine if residents are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable federal tax credit for low- and middle-income working individuals and families. Eligibility for the EITC is based on income, the number of family members and other criteria, such as the age of household members. Working families who earn up to $57,400 may be eligible, and the average credit last year was $2,800.

Tax filing season is now officially underway and the deadline to file this year is April 18. VITA sites will prepare in-person free tax filing, by appointment only, at several sites. Most of the sites will provide free tax filing through drop-off services.

Trashformation-A Trash-to-Treasure Art Contest for Students

a

The Louisville Zoo and LG&E and KU Foundation invite students in preschool through 12th grade to participate in our annual recycled art contest as part of Party for the Planet: A Month-Long Celebration of the Earth powered by LG&E and KU Foundation.

To honor the earth and all it provides, this year, the contest is asking students to take a different approach to the items used to create their art. Pollinators are the theme for the art contest and students are encouraged to create pollinator-friendly items using primarily natural, found materials such as rocks, wood, sticks, leaves, bamboo, etc. Avoid purchasing new items to make the pollinator project. Repurposing items is highly encouraged. The goal is to make a shelter or place of rest for pollinators that resembles a natural, inviting habitat.

The Zoo suggests students consider making things like a bat house, a bird feeder, a bee house, or other items beneficial to pollinators that can be painted or embellished with found or recycled items to showcase their own style. The final projects should be placed in the student’s home garden, a neighborhood garden or a school garden to support pollinators in their area during the summer and fall of 2023.

The contest is open to students in Kentucky and southern Indiana.

Celebration of the History of Black Achievement in Aviation at the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport

a

The Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is honoring Black History Month with an exhibit. "The Sky's the Limit: A Celebration of the History of Black Achievement in Aviation" has been featured at Bowman Field for the past two years

This year, it's being hosted at SDF. "Going into the third year, we felt it was important to build on our past successes with this exhibit that was previously featured at Bowman Field," Dan Mann, executive director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, said in a news release Wednesday. "Because our goal continues to be (to) educate and inspire more people on the importance of Black achievement in aviation and celebrate the advancements that each of these leaders piloted, we wanted to bring this exhibit to our SDF travelers." The exhibit uses visuals to tell the history of Black men and women in aviation, including how they got their start, what adversities they experienced and "how they ultimately achieved greatness and rose to prominence."
