Councilman Update

We’re Back, Public Safety, and Land Development

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It is official.  The Louisville Metro Council has completed our first committee hearings and our first full meeting of the year so we are back to work on behalf of you and this community.  I have been appointed as the Vice-Chair of the Labor and Economic Development committee and I am a member of the Budget Committee this year.  As the Vice-Chair of Labor and Economic Development, we will be providing policy and oversight of our economic development efforts and all of our labor contracts with the city.  Our labor contracts are critical to our ability to recruit and retain staff but also have huge budgetary impact.  Our economic development efforts dictate if we will be a growing or a stagnant city and whether we can grow and attract businesses into Louisville.  Finally, I will continue to focus on creating a budget that serves the entire city, including our District, while ensuring we have long term fiscal sustainability without having to raise taxes.

Public safety has been a top priority for me and the new administration.  We started the year off with one of the largest gang violence shootouts in city history (over 600 rounds shot in one event) followed by a string of murders with many related to gang based retaliation.  Further, local media has recently uncovered some facts around the death of Tyree Smith, the student at Eastern High School who was killed while waiting for the bus in September of 2021.  The reporting indicates that both JCPS and LMPD had information prior to that shooting and the risk to that bus stop.
