The Louisville Free Public Library celebrates Black History Month with programs throughout February

This February, the Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) is offering more than thirty free programs in celebration of Black History Month. Programs include book discussions, film screenings, history talks, storytimes, and more, designed to inform, inspire, and engage audiences of all ages.

Coming up at the Main Library  –

This month, the Main Library (301 York Street) plays host to a number of professors and local experts exploring aspects of Black history too often overlooked. On Saturday, February 4 (2 p.m.), members of the Chickasaw Book Project will share their stories about life in the Chickasaw neighborhood during the 1940s-70s. Sponsored by Louisville Public Media, this panel discussion will be led by WAVE-TV’s Dawne Gee. Register online at LFPL.org/Authors.

On Monday, February 6, (6:30 p.m.), UofL’s Dr. Thomas Wayne Edison will present BLatinX: Celebrating Puerto Rico’s African Heritage. Join local author Jermaine Fowler, host of the top-rated history podcast The Humanity Archive, on Tuesday, February 28 (7 p.m.) for the launch of his new book of the same name. February also marks the return of the Black History Month Film Series. Coming to a branch library near you –

Black History Month at the library has something for all ages, with special storytimes, craft sessions, and showcases for children and teens as well. The popular Black Superhero Showcase, sponsored by Louisville Public Media, makes its return to the Portland Library on Saturday, February 11, at 2 p.m. And members of the Kentucky Buffalo Soldiers Chapter stop by the Southwest, South Central, Iroquois, Shawnee, and Newburg libraries during the month to discuss the history of the all black unit of the 9th & 10th Calvary and how it has played a significant role in today’s military.

2023 winter yard waste collection schedule 

Since the amount of yard waste generated is far less in the winter, the schedule is adjusted for a more efficient collection. This year, from mid-January to mid-March, yard waste will be collected EVERY OTHER WEEK on the opposite week of recycling. Residents do NOT need to make a request for yard waste collection. The Recycle Coach calendar has been adjusted and citizens can view their calendar and set reminders using the app. During the weeks without yard waste collection, all Louisville residents are invited to drop off yard waste for FREE at the Waste Reduction Center. Yard waste must be bagged and bundled according to curbside collection rules. Accepted material includes leaves, twigs, straw, pine needles, shrubbery trimmings, Christmas trees, and branches and tree trimmings that are less than two inches in diameter and less than four feet long. Material may be in reusable containers, in paper or compostable bags, or bundled for easy off-loading. (Businesses and unbundled loads will be charged a fee as usual.)  The Waste Reduction Center is at 636 Meriwether Avenue and open Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residential yard waste will only be accepted for free during the weeks of January 24, February 7, February 21, and March 7. Regular weekly yard waste collection will resume the week of March 13.

This Senate district includes parts of Metro District 10, and D-8 Councilwoman Cassie Chambers Armstrong and Misty Glin are running for this office.

Apply now for External Agency Fund Competitive Grants

Grants available to social services, arts and creative industry organizations, and youth-focused services

Louisville Metro Government (LMG) is accepting applications from local non-profit organizations for programs or activities that contribute to the city's cultural, social, and economic vitality. These grants, which are funded through the city’s General Fund, are awarded to non-governmental or "external” agencies for LMG Fiscal Year 2024 (July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024).

The External Agency Funds (EAF) are awarded annually to nonprofit organizations offering programs or services in Louisville/Jefferson County that align with the Mayor's strategic goals. The competitive grants are available for Social Services programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services. The Arts and Creative Industries External Agency Funds programs are administered by Louisville Forward, and the Youth External Agency Funds programs are administered by the Office of Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods. Tomorrow is the last day for Christmas tree drop off

Christmas tree drop-off sites are available for all Louisville and Jefferson County residents at three locations. The Hubbards Lane site will also instantly recycle Christmas trees into mulch that will be offered back to citizens for home use. Those wishing to receive mulch must bring an appropriate container in which to carry it. All lights and ornaments should be removed from trees before they are dropped off.  Trees may be dropped off Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Waste Reduction Center closes at 3 p.m. on Saturdays) through January 28. East District Recycling Center, 595 N. Hubbards Lane Public Works Yard, 10500 Lower River Road (enter from Bethany Lane) Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue  Metro Public Works will also provide curbside pickup of Christmas trees within the Urban Services District after the holiday. Residents with City curbside yard waste pickup may set their Christmas trees and greenery out on their regular collection day. Trees may not be in plastic bags and all decorations must be removed.  Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies to see whether and when tree pickup is available

Buechel Bypass railroad overpass continues with one lane of traffic open in both directions

U.S. 31E (Buechel Bypass): As many of you are aware, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) closed the right lane on U.S. 31E over the Norfolk Southern Railroad (mile marker 10.4) after KYTC bridge engineers observed deterioration on one of the pier caps of the bridge during a routine inspection in 2021. This bridge carries an average of 29,000 vehicles per day. 

Motorists should expect a southbound lane closure and delays at a bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks at mile point 10.4. This is in addition to the northbound lane closure that has been in place since 2021. One lane of traffic will remain open in both directions. The additional lane closure is necessary as contractors advance on repairs to the bridge. Crews had previously worked under the bridge in an area not visible to motorists crossing the span. The repair was delayed as KYTC, and the contractor sought approval from the railroad to work on the bridge section over the tracks. The repair is expected to be completed no later than spring 2023.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Cat of the Week: Hermes They say new year, new you but what Hermes needs most isn’t change. He’s been through a lot recently, having had his front leg amputated after coming to the shelter. Louisville Zoo to host Wild Lights: Around the World, tickets go on sale February 1

Featuring new lanterns inspired by unique global sites

The Louisville Zoo is excited to announce the return of one of the largest lantern festivals in the nation, Wild Lights: Around the World, March 10 through May 21. Tickets will be on sale at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 1 at https://www.louisvillezoo.org/wildlights.

With an almost entirely new lineup of lanterns, guests will be able to see sights from around the world on their 1.4-mile excursion through the Zoo. Famous landmarks, flora and fauna from North and South America, Africa, Europe, Australia and Asia will be highlighted in six different zones. As families venture through the Zoo’s pathways each evening, they will experience hand-crafted, illuminated art displays comprised of silk-covered, metal frames and LED lightbulbs. The event will feature over 50,000 LED lightbulbs, 18 interactive displays, 8 animated lanterns and 10 light changing pieces that together present a spectacular feast for the eyes. A few lantern highlights include a walk-through cobra corridor, giant blue morpho butterfly, and a 9-foot, shark-themed photo opportunity. Other lanterns to look forward to include the Statue of Liberty, Sydney Opera House, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Hall of Supreme Harmony and so much more!

This 46-night immersive experience features live cultural performances including Chinese folk dances, acrobatics and more. There will also be unique handcrafted goods available for purchase along with snacks and cocktails by Service Systems Associates (SSA) – the Zoo’s food and amenity vendor.

The event is wheelchair and stroller-friendly on a paved path. The festival is a rain or shine event and will be held 6:30 – 10 p.m. Thursday through Sunday nights from March 10 – May 21 and nightly from March 30 – April 9.

The Louisville Zoo is celebrating Kroger Wild Winter Days now through February 28 with a Dare to Care food drive and discount admission when you donate a food item for the drive.

The Zoo is proud to team up with Kroger and Dare to Care again to help struggling families in our community. Guests who bring at least one canned food item per person may purchase discounted tickets at the Zoo windows for $9.75 per adult and $6.75 per child/senior ticket.

Since this partnership began in 2009, the Zoo has collected nearly 27,000 pounds of food thanks to the generosity of its guests. That’s equivalent to the weight of two African elephants like Mikki!

The discount is available at the gate only and is not valid for online purchases. The offer is not valid for special fee-based programs, for prepaid groups, field trips or with other discounts. No refunds will be provided for tickets prepaid in advanced or purchase online. Multiple cans are appreciated but only one discount per admission; additional cans do not provide additional discounts.

The Louisville Zoo will host a job fair on January 28 in the Islands Pavilion Gheens Room from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Zoo is seeking outgoing, highly motivated individuals who enjoy working with the public to fill seasonal positions in various departments. Positions are available in Admissions, Education, Guest Services, Membership, Front Desk, Horticulture and Rides & Attractions. Candidates will receive training in their area. The compensation for seasonal positions ranges from $15.15 to $17.15 per hour. All applicants must be at least 16 years of age and able to work a variable schedule that includes nights and weekends from March through October. Some positions require applicants to be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license. For those seeking a seasonal position in the Zoo’s animal departments, requirements include one year of college with a declared major in biology or a closely related field, as well as one year of working with animals in an institutional setting. Louisville Metro Government awards $250,000 in National Endowment for the Arts sub-grants to local arts organizations

One week left to apply for Arts and Creative Industries External Agency Funds

Louisville Metro Government’s Office of Arts and Creative Industries has awarded $250,000 in grants to 16 local art organizations through the National Endowment for the Arts’ American Rescue Plan sub-granting program. The overall goal of the program is to support Louisville's arts community as it continues to recover from the economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ARP sub-granting program, which did not require matching funds, supports arts organizations’ operating costs, including personnel, stipends for artists, facilities, health and safety supplies, and marketing and promotional costs. Organizations were able to apply for grants totaling either $10,000 or $25,000. These local arts organizations were awarded funding. The organizations’ applications were rated based on artistic excellence and merit, community benefit, use and management of funds, and demonstrated financial need. The Office of Arts and Creative Industries also is currently accepting applications from qualified nonprofits through the city’s annual External Agency Fund grant program now through Friday, February 3. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. EST. Successful applicants are committed to providing programs that achieve meaningful outcomes for Louisville citizens in the following focus areas: Arts experiences for everyone; Creative workforce; and/or Creative community spaces and neighborhoods. Income tax preparation assistance now available for eligible residents

Mayor Craig Greenberg joined community partners in announcing the start of free federal and state income tax preparation assistance for eligible residents on Tuesday. The Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA, provides trained, IRS-certified volunteers who offer free tax services at 11 sites across the city. VITA is available to individuals and families who earned less than $66,000 in 2022. VITA volunteers will also help determine if residents are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable federal tax credit for low- and middle-income working individuals and families. Eligibility for the EITC is based on income, the number of family members and other criteria, such as the age of household members. Working families who earn up to $57,400 may be eligible, and the average credit last year was $2,800. For many working families, free help with taxes and guidance in qualifying for the EITC can be a game-changer,” the Mayor said. "That’s money that could be used to start a savings account, buy a car, get braces for a child, pay books and college tuition, or start a college fund for their children." Since launching in 2001, VITA services have helped more than 135,500 Louisville tax filers. Last year, VITA processed more than 7,300 returns, adding more than $12 million to the local economy, including nearly $2 million in EITC to residents. Mayor Greenberg thanked the many partner organizations that work together on the mission of helping hardworking families file their tax returns properly and capitalize on the credits, including Louisville Metro’s Office for Resilience and Community Services (RCS).  RCS helps to connect tax filers to an array of financial empowerment services including the newly opened Financial Empowerment Center which provides free financial counseling, and the Tax Time Connect initiative. Tax Time Connect encourages “unbanked” tax filers to get banked with Bank On Louisville certified accounts, and to choose direct deposit for their tax refund. Tax filing season is now officially underway and the deadline to file this year is April 18. VITA sites will prepare in-person free tax filing, by appointment only, at several sites. AARP Tax-Aide also provides free tax prep services with a mission to serve any person who comes through the door, with special attention to those 60 and older. The AARP team helped to file more than 2,400 returns in 2022 leading to over $2.8 million in federal and state refunds. AARP Tax-Aid sites will begin operating at eight sites in early February. The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area. Funds can be applied to the purchase of an existing or newly constructed home and are NOT limited to first-time homebuyers. Applications are now available.

Drops of Kindness Program - For customers who may still have an outstanding balance, Louisville Water has the Drops of Kindness Program, which offers flexible, no-interest payment plans and additional help from community agencies through the Louisville Water Foundation. Louisville Metro LG&E Assistance is available for eligible residents who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $35,000 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under the Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD, through July 31. For more information, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

FEMA is providing financial assistance for COVID-19 related funeral expenses incurred on or after January 20, 2020. Eligibility requirements and instructions on how to apply are available online FEMA COVID-19 Funeral Assistance and through FEMA's dedicated helpline at 1-844-684-6333.

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. Sites require a one-day advance reservation. See the updated list of open congregate sites.  The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities.  Locate legal Short Term Rentals with new interactive map

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips. MetroSwap areas are here for your safety when buying or selling items

Are you looking for a public place to exchange items you've sold online? Do you share custody of a child and are looking for somewhere to exchange custody? The Louisville Metro Police Department is providing MetroSWAP Zones outside of some Division offices. There is 24 hour video surveillance. LMPD recommends: Agree to meet the person ONLY at a MetroSWAP station. Meet only during daylight hours. Tell someone you trust where you are meeting and at what time. Meet in the parking lot. There will be two designated parking spots at each location for use. Make this interaction brief and to the point. Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available through the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline. Call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org The program will connect callers to trained volunteer crisis counselors. You can also access a listing of community mental health services.

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
