Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I notice we have a chance for some winter weather this weekend that might even lead to some degree of accumulation. Weren’t we just in the 60s? Regardless, I hope you have a safe, relaxing weekend.

I wanted to focus my comments today on accessibility. Being an elected official comes with a host of responsibilities – researching and passing legislation, working with colleagues on various issues, and lots and lots of meetings! Getting to talk with constituents in various formats – being accessible – is one of those responsibilities I enjoy most. As we dive into the new year, then, I want to make sure I am doing my part in that regard.

Probably the most effective way for this to happen is through this weekly newsletter. I hope you find it worth your time. If there is something you think might be missing, or there is an issue you’d like to learn more about, let me know.

My monthly coffee meetings are another great way to stay connected. We had our first one of the year earlier this week, and I was heartened to see several new faces. We have already scheduled our next coffee for Wednesday, February 22 at 9 a.m. at the Sawyer Hayes Community Center, 2201 Lakeland Road. Interim LMPD Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel will be our featured guest. We try to schedule these on different days and at different times to give everyone an opportunity to attend at some point. If there is something I can do through scheduling or inviting guests that would make it more likely you would attend, let me know that as well.

Of course, it is not always easy to get someplace that might be far from home. I am happy to attend a neighborhood or suburban city meeting if that is easier for you and your neighbors. Just share the details with me, and I’ll work to get it on my calendar.

Finally, I hope you always feel comfortable calling or emailing my office. We strive to respond quickly with the best answer we can. Have a great weekend and let me know if I can ever be of assistance.

2022 Pop-Up Drop-Off Report

Pop Up Drop Off

The 2022 Pop-Up Drop-Off report shows that more than 4,000 people participated in the nine events last year.

Many of you are familiar with the Pop-Up Drop-Off events managed by Metro Public Works. Residents of Jefferson County are given the opportunity to get rid of large household items, electronics, prescription medication, scrap metal, and more at no cost. According to the recently published report, last year was very successful. For example, we diverted more than 300,000 pounds of material from the landfill! (As an aside, one of the most popular parts of these events is the on-site paper shredding. The Waste Management District understands the need for shredding services throughout Jefferson County and is exploring solutions separate from Pop-Up Drop-Off events.)

We are already working on this year's schedule and should be able to share that soon. Three of the nine Pop-Up Drop-Offs will be held in the eastern part of the county, with at least one at U of L's Shelby Campus. Last year, 960 residents in the zip codes found in District 17 participated in these events. Hopefully, we'll top that in 2023! Click here for information that will help you plan for these upcoming events should you want to participate.

PDS Weekly Activity Report

Each week, Metro Planning and Design Services (PDS) creates a report listing all new land use applications in Louisville. These applications can include changes in zoning, conditional use permits, sign permits, landscape plans, and more. There is one property in District 17 listed in this week's report. A revised detailed district development plan and a corresponding variance have been filed for an almost 14,000 square foot mixed-use development at 9903 Brownsboro Road. The two required meetings to review these requests have been scheduled for Wednesday, February 1 and Monday, February 6, respectively. More information on those meetings is below. Should you have any questions about the project, contact the case manager at clara.schweiger@louisvilleky.gov.

Pickleball at E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park

Pickleball

Those who love pickleball will have several opportunities to play at E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in the coming weeks. Glow Pickleball (more information above) will be an option this weekend and the third weekend in February. A Senior Pickleball League will begin Thursday, February 23 for those 65 and older. Those interested can play from 9 to 10 a.m. or 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. Finally, a Winter Pickleball League will begin Saturday, February 25. There will be two divisions, one for level 3.0 and below (1 to 2 p.m.) and one for level 3.5 and up (2:15 to 3:15 p.m.).

Both leagues cost $40/player and run for four weeks. Registration opens Friday, February 10 at 9 a.m. No spots will be held prior to 9 a.m. that day. Contact Andrew Spence at andrew.spence@ky.gov or 429-7270 to register or with any questions.

LMPD Crime Alert/Tips

Due to an increase in vehicle thefts, thefts from vehicles, and burglaries, LMPD's 8th Division would like to remind you of some things you can do to lessen your chances of being a victim of one of those crimes. Regarding your vehicle:

  • Never leave anything of value (laptops, purses, GPS devices, etc.) in your car.
  • Don’t leave your vehicle running while unattended.
  • Always lock the doors.
  • Remove garage door openers from vehicles that are usually parked outside.
  • Don’t leave keys in your vehicle.
  • Don’t leave the windows of your vehicle even partially open.
  • Park in a well-lit area when possible.
  • Never leave a firearm unprotected in your vehicle.
  • Remember to keep your garage door closed.

When it comes to protecting your home:

  • Keep your garage door closed.
  • Ensure the shrubbery around your home is kept in such a way that it reduces the number of places to hide.
  • Always lock your doors, including side doors to garages.
  • Make your home appear occupied if you aren’t there.
  • Use deadbolts on exterior doors.
  • Don’t leave out things that may tempt a thief such as mowers, bikes, grills, and other items that can be taken.

As always, report any suspicious person or vehicle to 574-7111. Click here for access to a map of recent crimes in our area, to sign up for email alerts regarding crimes near you, and more.

Radon Awareness Week

Radon

Radon Awareness Week is next week which makes it a good time to learn more about radon and how you can prevent being exposed to it in your home. Radon is an odorless, colorless, radioactive gas responsible for more than 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year according to the EPA and the Surgeon General's Office. Since it is difficult to identify immediate symptoms related to radon exposure, it may take years before health problems appear.

Having your home tested is the only effective way to determine whether you and your family is at risk of exposure. To obtain a free test kit, send an email to loumetrohealth@louisvilleky.gov.
