thp

The Good, the Bad & the Ugly is a Council Chronicle series that offers a glimpse at unusual stories in the news around the world. They are intended to provoke thought, inform and elicit a range of emotions from joy, outrage, anger, amusement or hope. These are a summary of stories worth knowing. Each month we will feature a story of the Good, the Bad & the Ugly around the globe.  MAN WINS $450,000 LAWSUIT AFTER OFFICE BIRTHDAY PARTY TRIGGERED PANIC ATTACK

A Kentucky man who suffers from an anxiety disorder, asked his employer to not throw him an office birthday party as was customary due to the stress it would trigger. That request was ignored, and the company threw him a surprise party anyway. As the man feared, the event caused a panic attack. He left the lunch party to go to his car, where he texted his manager about how upset he was that his request wasn't taken seriously.

The employee "was confronted and criticized" in a meeting the next day by his superiors, which triggered another panic attack and resulted in him being sent home. Four days after the birthday party, he received a letter in the mail explaining that he was fired "because of the events of the previous week."

thp

His employers said that the employee was fired for violating a "workplace violence policy" and that they stood by the termination, concerned that he would return to work angry and possibly dangerous to coworkers.

The former employee's lawyer said that their concerns about violence were unwarranted, as his client uses coping techniques to calm his emotions, and the termination was more likely an excuse to get rid of someone perceived as not being a team player. "They started giving him a pretty hard time for his response to the birthday celebration, actually accusing him of stealing his co-workers' joy," the lawyer stated.

A jury sided with the employee who was wrongfully terminated and awarded him $450,000 in damages, including $300,000 for mental anguish.

In a statement after the judgement, the lawyer representing the ex-employee said, "I think the significance for employers is that they need to understand that they shouldn't make assumptions about individuals with mental-health issues. My client was an exceptional employee that went above and beyond for his employer, and if they would have taken a step back it would have been clear that he did not present any danger at all."

In the 1992 "Bram Stoker's Dracula" film, Director Francis Ford Coppola refused to use modern visual effects for the film. Almost every special effect was achieved live on camera, with the use of makeup, puppets, mirrors, shadows, projections and forced perspective miniatures. PRESLEY

This 4-year-old Shih Tzu was discovered running down the side of the highway. Upon seeing him (and that tongue!) running scared and alone, a kind-hearted, dog-lover was smitten and brought him into her family.

Now Presley has a canine-sister, a new look, loving family and the happily ever after that every fur baby deserves.

Please consider adopting a pet from your local animal shelter or a pet rescue if you have room in your home and heart for a new furry family member. Trust me, you'll be so glad that you did. 🐾❤️

WHO'S THAT GIRL: MARISSA BROWN

thp

Marissa Brown

Marissa Brown joined the Metro Council Clerk's Office as an Assistant Clerk in June 2022.

  Q. What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

     A. "I enjoy exploring Indiana and Kentucky with my boyfriend, family, and friends."

   Q. How would your family and friends describe you?

     A. "Outgoing, brave and silly."

   Q. What’s something someone would be surprised to learn about you?

     A. "I think people would be surprised to learn that I’m a bit of an old soul. I love music from literally every genre and every decade. From Pavarotti to Marilyn Manson, from Barry White to Luke Combs, from 80s music to Doo-Wop hits, I LOVE IT all!"

  Q. What’s your idea of a dream vacation?

     A. "I would love to stay at a beach house, right on the water, 10/15 minutes away from a big city. This way I can relax in the morning/evenings and watch the sunrise/sunset right on the water, go

for a swim, and then in the evening get to enjoy the city nightlife and maybe hit a few bars and go dancing."

thp

Marissa's family from left to right : Marty, Sr. (Dad), Donna (Mom), Olyvia (Sister), Marissa, and Kyle (Brother-in-law).

   Q. Can you tell us a little about your family?

      A. "My family is awesome! My mother and father are high school sweethearts and just celebrated their 31st anniversary. They are incredibly supportive, and I am deeply thankful and lucky to have such amazing parents. My older sister Olyvia just turned 30 and is about to celebrate her 2-year anniversary with her husband, Kyle. My sister is a huge role model for me because she always strives to be better."

"My older brother Marty is a music teacher. He is my best buddy! He’s not the stereotypical older brother who picks on their baby sister, rather he’s always been very protective of me, and I can go to him for anything. Lastly, I have two cats, Woody and Anne, one dog named Kato and a turtle named Spartacus who all provide me with unconditional love. My family is the greatest and I am entirely grateful for them."

thp

Marissa and her boyfriend, Mitchell

  Q. Is there anything else you would like to share with us about yourself?

   A. "I am very, very excited to be working for Metro. Even though it’s only been a few months I really love being an assistant clerk for Louisville’s Metro Council. My coworkers have been very welcoming. My boss Sonya Harward has been very helpful and patient with me. The council members are all very kind and encouraging, especially President James, he never fails to say hello to me and make me laugh! I am very thankful for this position, and I promise to work incredibly hard every day and I look forward to achieving greatness, which is what Metro is all about!"
