The Louisville Zoo celebrates 41 years of merry — not scary — fun this October with its ever-popular annual Halloween event, Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer. Tickets go on sale to the general public September 6 at 11:00am for the beloved annual event that takes place October 1 – 2; 6 – 9; 13 – 16; 20 – 23; 27 – 30 (Thursday – Sunday nights, October 1 – 30). Tickets will be made available for early purchase to Louisville Zoo members via email on September 1.
Guests can dress up in their wildest costumes for the after-hours event that turns the Zoo into a living storybook, complete with favorite characters brought to life, music, photo opportunities around every corner and, of course, a safe place to trick-or-treat for kids 11 and under. Guests are encouraged to bring their own trick-or-treat bags. Reusable treat bags will be available for purchase at the Zoo’s Gift Shop for $2 (while supplies last).
As Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer may sell out, purchase your tickets early so you don’t miss out on the fun.
Tickets
Tickets for Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer are $13 for non-members (both adults and children 3 and older) and $6.50 for members (both adults and children 3 and older). Children 2 and under are free and do not require a ticket. Tickets are all-inclusive, covering the cost of Boo at the Zoo admission, parking, Spooktacular Carousel, “not-so-itsy-bitsy” Spider House and the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow attraction.
Members and guests can purchase tickets online at louisvillezoo.org, with their chosen date and arrival time. Tickets are limited each night and some nights may sell out quickly.
A limited number of Meijer anytime tickets can be purchased at participating Meijer stores for $11 beginning September 25. Visit louisvillezoo.org/meijer for a list of stores.

The Zoo will close early for regular daytime visitors. Gates will close at 3:00pm with guests being allowed to visit until 4:00pm.
The party starts at 5 p.m. and Halloween guests will enter the Zoo at their ticketed time. The trick-or-treat route will close and all guests must exit by 10:00pm.
Thursday, October 20 is Allergy-Friendly Night and will feature peanut-free treat booths and added non-food treats like stickers, pencils and more. Children with allergies can receive a teal token redeemable for an allergy-friendly option at our Switch Witch booth
Costumes
The Zoo encourages all visitors to wear family-friendly costumes. Adults may join in the fun, however full costume masks that cover the entire face are not permitted for adults.

Animals:
While guests may catch a glimpse of a few party animals, most animal ambassadors will not be on exhibit in the evenings so they can rest and follow their regular fall schedules.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has issued an annual "Antler Alert" to remind motorists that the peak season for deer-vehicle collisions has arrived. About half of all such crashes occur during the last three months of the year.
In addition to causing vehicle damage, deer can be hazardous to humans. Deer are among the leading causes of animal-related human fatalities in the United States, contributing to about 200 deaths on the highway every year.
In Kentucky, 2,988 highway crashes involving deer were reported to police in 2021, according to crash data used by the KYTC Office of Highway Safety to monitor highway crash trends.
KYTC offers these driving tips:
- Slow down immediately upon spotting a deer crossing the roadway; they tend to travel in groups.
- Don’t swerve to avoid a deer, which can result in a more serious crash with an oncoming vehicle or roadside object.
- In the event of a crash, keep both hands on the wheel and apply brakes steadily until stopped.
- Always wear a seat belt.
- Keep headlights on bright at night unless other vehicles are approaching.
- Eliminate distractions while driving: Phones down!
Drive defensively, constantly scanning the roadside, especially at dawn and dusk, when deer are most active.

Louisville Metro Resilience and Community Services (RCS) is offering pre-registration for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Fall Subsidy Component. The pre-registration will begin on Monday, October 3, and end on October 31, or until appointments reach capacity.
Pre-registration is for Jefferson County residents, within 130% of the federal poverty guidelines, who are elderly (60 years or older) or disabled and receive a fixed income (Social Security, SSI, pension or Black Lung benefits).
Also, through a new partnership with MSD, eligible residents will have the opportunity to apply for MSD’s Senior Citizen Discount Program.
Senior citizens, 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less, may be eligible to receive a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the consent decree surcharge.
Eligible households can apply for one or both LIHEAP Subsidy and the MSD’s Senior Discount Program with one single appointment.
Starting today, Sept. 30, the toll-free automated appointment system is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to schedule an in-person appointment at one of seven locations. The automated scheduler will provide details about these locations as well as eligibility and required documentation.

The Louisville MSD rate discount for low-income customers triples from the previous 10 percent to 30 percent effective with billing periods beginning on or after October 1, 2022. It will also be easier to apply for the discount because of a new partnership with the Louisville Metro office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS).
Eligibility for MSD’s Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) is limited to households at or below 150 percent of federal poverty guidelines.
RCS will handle a one stop application process covering both EWRAP and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). That means applicants will submit documentation only once instead of having to go through separate processes for wastewater discounts and energy assistance.
RCS will also take applications for the MSD Senior Citizen Discount Program. New this year, seniors already receiving the discount must recertify eligibility each year before the anniversary of their previous approval date by filing a new application. The program provides a 30 percent discount for customers age 65 and above with gross household incomes of less than $35,000. Seniors may also continue to apply directly with MSD at louisvillemsd.org/paymybill.
EWRAP is approved for the period of October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2023. The MSD Board will decide each year whether to continue the program.

One person has died and two people have tested positive for West Nile virus in Jefferson County.
In 2021, there were three human cases and no deaths. In 2020, there were no human cases or deaths.
Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus are not unusual for this time of year. The department continues to find mosquitoes with West Nile virus in several ZIP codes.

In most instances, people infected with West Nile virus either show no symptoms or relatively mild symptoms. However, less than 1% of infected people develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis. People over 60 years of age are at the greatest risk for severe disease. Those with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease and people who have received organ transplants are also at greater risk for serious illness.
Avoid mosquito bites
- Use insect repellents when you go outdoors. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide longer-lasting protection. To optimize safety and effectiveness, repellents should be used according to the label instructions. More information about insect repellents can be found here.
- Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors. Mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with repellent containing permethrin or another EPA-registered repellent will give extra protection. Don't apply repellents containing permethrin directly to skin. Do not spray repellent on the skin under your clothing.
- Take extra care during peak mosquito biting hours of early morning and dusk. Be sure to use repellent and wear protective clothing from dusk to dawn or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times.
- Install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitos outside.
The department conducts mosquito fogging in areas where West Nile virus has been detected. Illegally dumped trash is more than just an eyesore! It is expensive to clean up, it negatively impacts our quality of life and economic development, and the plastic debris may end up in our waterways and oceans. Individuals caught dumping illegally may have their vehicle impounded and face fines and fees totaling about $1,000.
We have recently posted images on social media asking for help identifying illegal dumpers caught on camera and reporting when a vehicle was impounded. WDRB also helped spread the word about the negative impacts of illegal dumping. View their story here.
Residents are encouraged to fill out this online form if they witness illegal dumping. The form can also be used to share home security camera footage or images of illegal dumping occurring with our Solid Waste Enforcement Department. Did you know..? Many waste materials can be dropped off legally and for FREE. Up to three large household items, up to 4 passenger tires, and up to 3 electronics items can be dropped off for free at the at the Waste Reduction Center, located at 636 Meriwether Avenue. A pickup truckload of yard waste or construction debris can be disposed for only $60.00.
Residents can also utilize the free Pop-Up Drop-Off events that occur monthly, on a Saturday 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., March - November, in various parts of Jefferson County. Senior Nutrition Program provides nutritional lunchtime meals to active senior citizens at Congregate Meal Sites and delivers to homebound seniors through the Meals on Wheels Program, throughout the Louisville Metro area. These programs help to improve the lives of older adults by supporting good nutritional health and promoting their independence and well-being.

Southwest Community Ministries is currently overwhelmed with families who have never needed assistance before but are running out of household and hygiene products! They are asking for help from members of the community, youth groups, or anyone willing to donate.
If you would prefer to give food donations, items such as ravioli, ramen, fruit cups, canned meats, soups, and peanut butter crackers are always good options. Things like Ensure and pull top lids are good for seniors as well!

At the Waste Reduction Center, Louisville/Jefferson County residents can dispose of tires, household bulky waste such as metals, appliances, electronics, tree limbs and stumps up to three feet in diameter, unbagged yard waste, construction debris, and furniture.
