BBB September 2022 Hot Topics

1. In light of the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness announcement, BBB warns, scammers may try to take advantage of any confusion around the decision. BBB advises consumers to know the terms of their student loans and the relief program, never pay money for a free government program, and beware of out-of-the-blue phone calls, texts, and emails from government agency imposters. 2. After leaving a comment on a YouTube video, a consumer reported to BBB he received a reply from a scammer impersonating a YouTube personality, claiming he had won a giveaway. The consumer lost money by paying “shipping fees” for the giveaway. Be wary of celebrity impersonators online, as well as any unsolicited messages about giveaways that consumers did not enter.

3. BBB continues to receive reports from Indiana consumers who have received text messages regarding an Indiana Department of Workforce grant. This is a government imposter scam. Disregard these text messages if you receive them.

4. Beware of con artists impersonating the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The scammers used the names of real (but retired) officers and tried to trick the local consumer into thinking he missed a court date and owed several thousands of dollars in fines as a result. Luckily the consumer followed up with the actual Jefferson Co. Sheriff’s Office, who was able to confirm this was a scam. Beware of phone calls regarding missed court appearances or other legal matters and contact the government agency or office directly with any questions.  

5. BBB continues to receive reports of puppy scams in the area. When buying a new pet, make sure you see the animal in person first, check the breeder’s credentials and references, and only pay with a secured method such as a credit card. Adopting from an accredited charity is also an excellent way to find your next pet!

6. BBB has received multiple reports of Powerball text message scams. The texts claim to come from a Powerball jackpot winner looking to share their winnings with random individuals. This is a scam – do not reply to the texts or give out any personal information!

7. Consumers continue to report receiving fake Publisher’s Clearing House phone calls. The real Publisher’s Clearing House only notifies their winners by mail or in person, not by phone. Any “sweepstakes organization” that asks for money upfront to claim a grand prize is likely a scam.

8. A consumer reported receiving debt collection calls from a scammer impersonating a real collection agency that was no longer in business. BBB warns, if you receive any suspicious debt collection calls, ask for proof of the debt and the agency. Don’t give in to scare tactics, and don’t give out financial information over the phone.

9. BBB has received reports from multiple consumers of an anti-virus confirmation email scam. The email claims to verify the consumer’s purchase of anti-virus software protection and provides information on how to get a refund. In every case, the consumers never purchased the software in question. This is a phishing scam. If you receive a similar email, check your credit card statement or bank account for any purchase, and don’t reply to the email.  

10. Multiple consumers have reported online shopping scams to BBB in the past month, involving everything from jewelry to whiskey. BBB reminds consumers to always check bbb.org for reviews of companies before purchasing items online, and to use a secured form of payment like a credit card when buying.

• I-65 and I-264 (Watterson Expressway): Nightly lane closures and delays are possible while crews perform striping and pavement marker work in a mobile operation between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Motorists should provide plenty of space to crews displaying “WET PAINT” signage and be observant of slowed vehicles while moving through the work zone.
• I-65 North: Motorists can expect single lane closures from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 19 through Sept. 23 on the Lincoln Bridge, which carries I-65 North over the Ohio River. A crew is performing a biennial inspection of the span. An inspection of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge, which carries I-65 South over the Ohio River, was completed in August.
• I-71 South: Closed from 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 through 7 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, between I-264 (Watterson Expressway) and I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway). The ramps to I-71 South at the I-265 interchange will also be closed. The suggested alternate route for motorists on I-71 South and I-265 South will be I-265 South to I-64 West to I-264 East to I-71 South. Motorists on I-265 North can continue to U.S. 42 West (Exit 37) to I-264 East to I-71 South. 
• I-264 (Watterson Expressway): Lane closures and delays are possible both eastbound and westbound between I-65 and I-71 while crews upgrade and enhance pavement markings along the corridor. Lane closures are possible nightly Sunday through Thursday between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. and weekends from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday. These pavement marking upgrades are part of a Highway Safety Improvement Project to bring I-264 up to current standards and increase lane use awareness approaching many of the interstate interchanges. Motorists should reduce speeds and be observant of changing traffic control within the work zone.

• U.S. 31E (Bardstown Road/Baxter Avenue): Crews will be working on sidewalks and occupying parking lanes between Bonnycastle Avenue to Bardstown Road. Overnight lane closures may be possible from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. for additional sidewalk work that cannot be completed from parking lanes. This is part of an overall Highway Safety Improvement Program within the Bardstown Road corridor. 
• U.S. 31E (Bardstown Road): Lane shifts and delays are possible at Southpointe Boulevard for intersection improvements. The intersection is being improved to include dual turn lanes. The work is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2023. 
• U.S. 31E (Buechel Bypass): Right lane of the bridge closed over the Norfolk Southern Railroad (mile point 10.4). A contractor is repairing the span after a routine inspection in 2021 identified areas that needed work. The contractor is coordinating with the railroad to be able to cross the tracks to complete the repairs. The project is expected to be completed no later than spring 2023.
• KY 146 (New LaGrange Road): Nightly lane closures are possible from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. from U.S. 60 (Shelbyville Road) at mile point 0.017 to Whipps Mill Road at mile point 2.565 for milling and asphalt resurfacing. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2022.
• KY 155 (Taylorsville Road): Nightly lane closures and delays are possible from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. between Harrods Old Trace/New Hopewell Road at mile point 5.711 and Hopewell Road at mile point 6.335 for base failure repairs. That area encompasses the I-265 interchange. Motorists will be directed through the work zone via flagging operations. The work is part of an asphalt resurfacing project scheduled to be completed fall 2022.
• KY 864 (Fegenbush Lane):  Daytime lane closures and delays are possible from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to construct a left turn lane on Fegenbush Lane at Fenwick Drive. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2022.
• KY 913 (Blankenbaker Parkway): Overnight lane closures are possible from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. between Ellingsworth Lane and U.S. 60 (Shelbyville Road) for striping operations. Motorists will be directed through the work zone via flagging operations. The project is expected to be completed fall 2022.
• KY 1450 (Blue Lick Road): Weekday lane closures are possible on Blue Lick Road between Gene Snyder and Preston Highway for road widening work. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2023.
• KY 1747 (North Hurstbourne Parkway): Nightly lane closures and delays are possible from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. between KY 1447 (Westport Road) at mile point 17.04 and KY 22 (Brownsboro Road) at mile point 18.424 for base failure repairs. Motorists will be directed through the work zone via flagging operations. The work is part of an asphalt resurfacing project scheduled to be completed fall 2022.
• KY 1819 (Ruckriegel Parkway): Nightly lane closures and delays are possible from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. between Billtown Road at mile point 8.885 and KY 155 (Taylorsville Road) at mile point 9.364 for base failure repairs. Motorists will be directed through the work zone via flagging operations. The work is part of an asphalt resurfacing project scheduled to be completed fall 2022.
• KY 2860 (Grinstead Drive): Nightly lane closures and delays are possible from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. between U.S. 31E (Bardstown Road) at mile point 0 and U.S. 60A (Cherokee Parkway) at mile point 0.968 for asphalt paving. Motorists will be directed through the work zone via flagging operations. Motorists should take note that on-street parking will be affected. The project is scheduled to be completed fall 2022.
• KY 3082 (Bank Street): Daily lane closures and delays are possible between 38^th Street and 22^nd Street for traffic signal loop installation/repair and sidewalk construction. Motorists will be directed through the work zone via flagging operations. The work is part of an asphalt resurfacing project scheduled to be completed fall 2022. 
• Jefferson County (Various Locations): Nightly lane closures and delays are possible while crews perform pavement marker maintenance in a mobile operation between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Motorists should be observant of slowed vehicles while moving through the work zone and provide space for crews to work safely.
