Monkeypox cases in Louisville remain low, but keep yourself safe

Late last week, the U.S. government declared monkeypox a public health emergency. 

In Louisville the risk of monkeypox to the general public is low. There have been 8 cases. Three individuals are in active isolation. Five individuals have recovered. 

The U.S. supply of monkeypox vaccine is extremely limited. The CDC provides vaccines to state health departments who then allocate the vaccines to city and county health departments. The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) has been allocated 100 doses to vaccinate documented close contacts of someone who has tested positive. As the vaccine supply increases, it will be made available to healthcare providers to offer to patients who meet the eligibility criteria. We have implored our state and federal officials to get more vaccines for our community. 

There are several actions individuals can take to reduce their risk of exposure, including getting vaccinated. 

If you are having symptoms or think you have been exposed: 

• Please see your healthcare provider or visit an urgent care center to see if you should be tested and treated.
• Please isolate at home until you can be seen.
• Wear a face mask to your appointment and make sure any lesions are completely covered.
• When you arrive, please tell the provider that you are experiencing symptoms consistent with monkeypox.

No Labor Day waste collection, drop-off location closings

There will be no residential garbage, recycling, yard waste or bulky waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits) on Labor Day, Monday, September 5. Collection through the week will be delayed by one day because of the holiday. To receive automatic reminders of changes due to holidays, download our Recycle Coach app at the App Store or on Google Play.  Residents who rely on private waste haulers should consult those haulers about holiday collection schedules. Also, our three staffed recycling drop-off locations, the Waste Reduction Center, and the Haz Bin hazardous waste disposal site, will be closed on Saturday, September 4 in recognition of the holiday and closed on Monday as usual. A map and complete list of the drop-off sites and regular operating hours can be found at our website.

Free Firearm Safety and Stop the Bleed Classes EVERY Tuesday

This two hour training meets every Tuesday from 5:30pm-7:30pm located at 3900 West Broadway.  Participants will learn the basics to firearm training including safe handling, storage, and local laws. Participants will also learn Stop the Bleed basics including packing a gunshot wound and using a tourniquet.  Participants will receive a free gun lock.

Mayor's Hike, Bike & Paddle, September 5th

The Mayor's Hike, Bike & Paddle event returns for the second time in 2022 on Labor Day, Monday, September 5th.  This is the 18th year and 36th edition of Hike, Bike & Paddle presented by Norton Sports Health. The event kicks off at the Louisville Community Boathouse, 1325 River Road, at 8 a.m. At 8 a.m., attendees can enjoy various activities to get them warmed up including yoga with Yoga East, Tai Chi with Nu Chapter Tai Chi Chuan & QiGo Institute and Zumba with Nu Image Fitness.  Attendees will be able to also visit the tents of several local businesses and groups starting at 8 a.m. These include the Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky (BIAK) who will be fitting 500 helmets for cyclists who do not have one, the Louisville Cricket Club, 502 Dragon Boats, Louisville Rowing Club and many more!  Scheller's Cycling will have the Inflation Station set up and ready to fill up any bicycle tires that need air!  For the first 2,000 attendees there will be free Hike, Bike & Paddle t-shirts, look for the t-shirt tent and get in line to grab a shirt while supplies last!  Also this year, look for the signs with the QR codes for a chance to sign up to win a pair of 4-day passes to either Louder Than Life or Bourbon & Beyond! Sign up between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. to win and the Mayor will announce the winners on stage!  The event also features some fun and exciting routes for attendees. Starting shortly after 9 a.m., all attendees will be released to embark on their Hike, Bike or Paddle! Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer

The Louisville Zoo celebrates 41 years of merry — not scary — fun this October with its ever-popular annual Halloween event, Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer. Tickets go on sale to the general public September 6 at 11 a.m. for the beloved annual event that takes place October 1 – 2; 6 – 9; 13 – 16; 20 – 23; 27 – 30 (Thursday – Sunday nights, October 1 – 30). Tickets will be made available for early purchase to Louisville Zoo members via email on September 1. Guests can dress up in their wildest costumes for the after-hours event that turns the Zoo into a living storybook, complete with favorite characters brought to life, music, photo opportunities around every corner and, of course, a safe place to trick-or-treat for kids 11 and under. Guests are encouraged to bring their own trick-or-treat bags. Reusable treat bags will be available for purchase at the Zoo’s Gift Shop for $2 (while supplies last). As Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer may sell out, purchase your tickets early so you don’t miss out on the fun. The trick-or-treat route will close and all guests must exit by 10 p.m. Thursday, October 20 is Allergy-Friendly Night and will feature peanut-free treat booths and added non-food treats like stickers, pencils and more. Children with allergies can receive a teal token redeemable for an allergy-friendly option at our Switch Witch booth. Costumes The Zoo encourages all visitors to wear family-friendly costumes.
