Monkeypox cases in Louisville remain low, but keep yourself safe

Late last week, the U.S. government declared monkeypox a public health emergency. 

In Louisville the risk of monkeypox to the general public is low. There have been 8 cases. Three individuals are in active isolation. Five individuals have recovered. 

The U.S. supply of monkeypox vaccine is extremely limited. The CDC provides vaccines to state health departments who then allocate the vaccines to city and county health departments. The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) has been allocated 100 doses to vaccinate documented close contacts of someone who has tested positive. As the vaccine supply increases, it will be made available to healthcare providers to offer to patients who meet the eligibility criteria. We have implored our state and federal officials to get more vaccines for our community. 

There are several actions individuals can take to reduce their risk of exposure, including getting vaccinated. 

If you are having symptoms or think you have been exposed: 

• Please see your healthcare provider or visit an urgent care center to see if you should be tested and treated.
• Please isolate at home until you can be seen.
• Wear a face mask to your appointment and make sure any lesions are completely covered.
• When you arrive, please tell the provider that you are experiencing symptoms consistent with monkeypox.

Parkland Business Preservation District Meeting

The Landmarks Commission is starting the process of updating the Standard Design Guidelines, and we need YOUR help! They were last updated in 1997! We are starting our Design Guidelines update conversations with the Window Design Guidelines. They are our most utilized guidelines and are among the most important. Historic windows on front facades of buildings can be just as character defining as eyes on a person’s face. The windows tell a lot about a building and that’s why their preservation is important. The Design Guidelines focus on preservation first, but if that’s not possible, they then provide a path forward for appropriate replacement. With new methodologies and technologies available in historic preservation, new design guidelines that reflect and utilize these are needed. This is why we will be hosting meetings in each preservation district so that residents, business owners, property owners, and more can come to share thoughts and learn more about the COA process. The meeting in Parkland will be held on Thursday, August 18^th at 6pm in the Dare to Care Community Kitchen located at 1200 S. 28^th Street. We look forward to seeing you there!

Free Firearm Safety and Stop the Bleed Classes EVERY Tuesday

This two hour training meets every Tuesday from 5:30pm-7:30pm located at 3900 West Broadway.  Participants will learn the basics to firearm training including safe handling, storage, and local laws. Participants will also learn Stop the Bleed basics including packing a gunshot wound and using a tourniquet.  Participants will receive a free gun lock.

YouthBuild Now Enrolling

YouthBuild Louisville assists young people in meeting significant life goals. This includes preparing for college and careers by providing services in education, vocational training, community service, case management, placement, and post-graduation support.

YouthBuild is now recruiting for their next class. You must be between the ages of 18-24 and still need your GED to qualify. Participants will receive a weekly stipend while they work toward their career and educational goals.  Program completion also makes select graduates eligible for college scholarships and job placement services. Notice of Title V Construction Permit

The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (District) proposes to issue a construction permit to Clariant Corporation (Louisville West Plant) (catalyst manufacturer), in accordance with Regulation 2.03. This permit is being issued to replace an existing parts washer in the Reynolds Wrap Parts Shop. The 30-day public comment period starts on July 14, 2022, and ends on August 15, 2022. A public hearing may be scheduled if the District determines that there are germane, unresolved issues or substantial public interest, in accordance with Regulation 2.07.

Drafts of the permit and summary are available at the District office, 701 West Ormsby Avenue, Suite 303, Louisville, KY 40203, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, by calling Matt King at (502) 574-6000, emailing  our permitting department, or on the APCD website. Copies of the application are available upon request. Written comments will be accepted through our online comment form until midnight or at the District office until 5:00 p.m. on August 15, 2022.

1. What is the purpose of this permit? Construction Permit C-0036-22-0016-V will allow construction of new equipment to allow for automated transfer of materials instead of manual transfer, construction of equipment to replace older equipment, and piping to allow operation through multiple control chains.
2. Will this permit increase pollution? The equipment permitted in Construction Permit C-0036-22-0016-V has potential PM emissions of 3.20 tons per year, potential HAP emissions of 00544 tons per year, potential NOx emissions of 2.40 tons per year, and potential VOC emissions of 6.04 tons per year. The permit will continue to limit plantwide emissions below major source thresholds (100 tons per year of criteria pollutants, 10 tons per year of single HAPs, and 25 tons per year of total HAPs).
3. Does this facility have a history of non-compliance? The last notice of violation was in 2022 and addressed with Agreed Board Order 22-01. This violation was for having changes in the plant’s operation that should have been reported See the Compliance History table in the Statement of Basis, page 14.
4. Where can I find out more? Additional information, including equipment descriptions, potential emissions, and applicable rules, are summarized in the Statement of Basis. The Draft Permit details the application of these rules to the equipment and includes the monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting that the District believes is necessary to demonstrate compliance.

Waste Reduction Center will no longer accept loads of shingles

Beginning Tuesday, August 30, 2022 the Waste Reduction Center will no longer accept loads of shingles for recycling. Businesses that regularly bring shingles to the Waste Reduction Center will be notified of this change by mail or in person at the facility’s gate. At the gate, businesses are given this list of other options for recycling shingles: River Road Shingle Recycling, 3402 Vogt Avenue Kentucky Roof to Road LLC, 4675 Melton Avenue The decision for this change comes from rising costs of transportation and maintaining the equipment used in handling and transporting the heavy loads. All other services will remain the same and the Waste Reduction Center will continue to be an affordable and safe option for residents who need to recycle or dispose of bulky items and large loads of materials.    “The Waste Reduction Center will continue to provide a great service to the residents of our community while recovering as much material as possible,” said Metro Public Works Director Vanessa Burns. At the Waste Reduction Center, Louisville/Jefferson County residents can dispose of up to four tires, up to four large household items, and up to three electronic devices for free. Residents may also dispose of metal, tree limbs and stumps up to three feet in diameter, unbagged yard waste, and construction debris for a fee. The Waste Reduction Center is located at 636 Meriwether Avenue and is open Tuesday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Paving Projects & Road Work for the week of August 15th

Below is the list of Louisville Metro Public Works road safety improvement projects for the week of August 15.  Note: the schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather and/or operational factors. Alta Vista Rd. from Lexington Rd. to the I-64 Overpass Alta Vista Ct. from Alta Vista Rd. to the dead end Additionally, our contractors plan to work on various safety improvements on: Manslick Rd. from Palatka Rd. to St. Anthony Church Rd. S. Watterson Trl. from Bardstown Rd. to Hurstbourne Ln.  Following completion of safety improvements of these roadways, milling and paving will take place.
