Message From McCraney

m

Well, well, well, all of my recent communications about zoning issues and development plans have some residents in a tizzy. Evidently, in my quest to share information about the development process, I struck a nerve or two in some who have fought the good fight against unwanted development and felt like the "system" is not designed with residents in mind. I was told that the tone of my messages sounded supportive of all the undesirable construction that's currently taking place and being proposed. As the saying goes, "No good deed goes unpunished."

One of my favorite poems, Keep On Keeping On, begins with this paragraph, "If the day looks kinder gloomy and your chances kinder slim, if the situation's puzzlin' and the prospect's awful grim, if perplexities keep pressin' till hope is nearly gone, just bristle up and grit your teeth and keep on keepin' on."

I was reminded of this poem after receiving correspondence from a gentleman who has a bitter taste in his mouth from having gone toe-to-toe with the federal government about its decision to build the VA Medical Center in the very dense heart of District 7. No matter how hard the wonderful residents of District 7, who live in close proximity to the VA site, tried to voice their justified reasons for wanting the federal government to select a different location, it appeared that no one was listening – or caring, for that matter, about what they had to say. That would leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth.

Elected officials on the federal level negotiated the VA deal and appropriated the funding to guarantee its construction. Although this transaction occurred many years before I thought to run for this Council seat, some residents blame me because I represent the "government." As I mentioned to an upset resident about the VA construction, I use the motto, "If you can't beat them, join them." I explained that since the construction is in full gear, all I can do at this juncture is make sure residents are kept in the loop about all phases of construction and what they need to do if their homes are negatively impacted by blasting, noise, and other aggressive construction. The resident is still not convinced that I shouldn't be blamed.

I have learned through the years that we are called to focus on the good that we can do and not to worry about the outcome, which very well could be a "punishment." We are all created for good works – not for rewards or accolades, but because this is precisely what we are called to do. Doing good will not always be easy; doing good often comes with challenges and sometimes burdens. Nonetheless, I'll tell you like I tell myself – do good anyway and keep on keepin' on.

During Thursday night's Council meeting, I was honored to present a proclamation to District 7's own Ballard High School Girls Softball Team for accomplishing an undefeated season and winning their first state softball championship. Pictured below are: Councilman Scott Reed (D-16), Coach Alan Jones, the CHAMPIONS, and other coaches and friends.

Ballard scored the game's first two runs before Lexington Catholic broke through with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Then the Bruins added a run in the top of the sixth inning. While holding on to a one-run lead, the incredible softball team performed a triple play on an infield line drive to defeat Lexington Catholic 3-2 and capture the title. They finished the year 39-0, and are the third team in KHSAA softball history to go undefeated.

WAY TO GO, BRUINS!!!

Also during the Council meeting, a resolution passed unanimously to support the "Get the Champ a Stamp" movement to create an official postal stamp to honor the late Muhammad Ali.

It was noted in the resolution that Muhammad Ali once said "I should be a postage stamp. That's the only way I'll ever get licked." The resolution will forever serve as a reminder that, even in Ali's passing, he will never be licked.

Gov. Beshear Opens Online Portal for Donations to Help Victims of Flooding in Eastern Kentucky

Contributions will help with long-term recovery efforts

FRANKFORT, Ky. – On July 28th, Gov. Andy Beshear opened an online portal for donations to flood victims at https://TeamEKYFloodReliefFund.ky.gov. The website will allow Kentuckians once again to help their neighbors in a time of desperate need.

“I wish I could tell you why we keep getting hit here in Kentucky. I wish I could tell you why areas – where people may not have that much – continue to get hit and lose everything. I cannot give you the why, but I know what we do in response to it. And the answer is: Everything we can,” Gov. Beshear said. “Today, we’re giving everyone that opportunity to help through the Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund.”

Donations can be made at https://TeamEKYFloodReliefFund.ky.gov. The funds will be used to provide long-term relief to individuals directly impacted by this historic flooding in Eastern Kentucky. These donations can help with food, shelter and other necessities of life and supplement emergency funds that come into the area.

Money collected through the donation site will not be used for administrative costs. Credit card and treasury fees may apply.

After Western Kentucky’s devastating tornados in December 2021, people came together and raised $52 million through more than 150,000 donations to help survivors with their long-term recovery.

If you would like to donate items toward immediate relief in Eastern Kentucky, contact your local shelter, Red Cross or United Way. Immediate needs include water and cleaning supplies.

  • Daily average incidence rate of 56.1 cases per 100,000 population

  • 5.9% staffed ICU beds are in use by patients with confirmed COVID-19
  • 47.6 of those fully vaccinated have received a booster dose
  • Wastewater testing data shows the BA.5 variant to be the dominant variant.

Dr. Jeffrey Howard, interim director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW), announced that there are three cases of monkeypox in the Louisville Metro area. He said all three individuals are working closely with LMPHW. Dr. Howard added that the department has initiated treatment to those infected, is using contact tracing methods and has vaccinated close contacts, per CDC recommendations.

Monkeypox tends to spread through close contact with someone who is infected with the virus. It can spread through prolonged face-to-face contact and intimate physical contact such as kissing, cuddling or sex. The virus can also be spread through materials, like bedding, that has previously touched an infectious rash or bodily fluids.

Symptoms of monkeypox include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Backache
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Chills
  • Exhaustion
  • A rash that sometimes can look like pimples or blisters on the face, inside of the mouth, hands, feet, chest, genitals or anus

If you are displaying symptoms of monkeypox reach out to your health care provider.
