Sponsoring and then passing a public tree ordinance in 2016 and 2017 is one of the highlights of my terms in office. The ordinance is administered by a small team within Louisville Metro's Department of Parks and Recreation that is specifically dedicated to our city's public trees. The information below was recently published by TreesLouisville, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and expanding Louisville’s urban forest.
Louisville Metro’s Urban Forestry division helps maintain our canopy by planting, watering and pruning trees in city parks and along parkways, removing dead or decaying trees in city parks and parkways, facilitating community planting projects, educating on best management practices, and enforcing ordinances that say what you can and cannot do with the trees adjacent to your property.
Louisville Metro Urban Forestry offers programs and information to help you achieve a healthy canopy in your neighborhood while also protecting our community trees to ensure a more livable city.

Tree maintenance is the responsibility of the abutting property owner. This includes pruning, removals, stump grinding, replacement, and watering.

Property owners must have a permit issued by Louisville Metro Urban Forestry to perform significant public right-of-way tree maintenance, including work on trees between the sidewalk and the street. All ROW tree removals require a permit and any tree removed must be replaced within the next planting season. Regardless of where the new tree is planted, the stump must be ground down 18" below grade within 3 months of the removal.
Financial aid for tree maintenance and removals is available for low- and moderate-income homeowners who meet certain requirements. To apply to the Louisville Metro Tree Assistance Fund, the applicant must:
- Be the legal property owner of the residence (non-business)
- Have no outstanding fines and liens on the property
- Have a tree maintenance permit issued by Urban Forestry for a public ROW tree.
The Office of Resilience and Community Services will process the financial portion of the application and inform Urban Forestry how much aid the applicant qualifies for. This is a sliding-scale program based on income. If you qualify for any level of assistance, Louisville Metro will facilitate the tree maintenance. To apply, request a tree inspection through Metro 311 and mention you would like to apply for the Tree Assistance Fund.
Neighborhood Tree Program
If you are a part of a neighborhood association or community network that is looking to plant more street trees, you may qualify for donated trees from Metro Urban Forestry. Pop-Up Drop-Offs are free recycling and large item disposal events for residents of Jefferson County. Through a partnership between the Department of Public Works, the Waste Management District, and Metro Council, these events are held monthly, March through November, at various locations.
The July event is scheduled for Saturday, July 16, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Shawnee Park, enter at Southwestern Parkway and River Park Drive.
Residents can have documents shredded, recycle electronics, tires, and scrap metal, dispose of prescription medication and bulky items, and compost yard debris. Items must be separated into those various categories for easy off-loading at each area. Limitations and guidelines are found at Louisvilleky.gov/PopUps.
Future events will be announced and are posted on the Recycle Coach app calendar.
You can also recycle up to three electronic devices, up to four tires, and dispose of up to three large household items for free, year-round at the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue.

APRON Inc. was created in 2011 to help provide financial relief to food and beverage industry workers in the Louisville area who find themselves in need during times of crisis. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, APRON Inc. has stepped up with a far greater volume of assistance to local workers than ever before.
The pandemic also hit “pause” on A Taste of Independents, one of APRON’s most popular fundraising events. Happily, A Taste of Independents returns on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at The Olmsted (3701 Frankfort Avenue), featuring around 30 food and spirits tastings by local independent restaurants and bars.
A Taste of Independents is from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and tickets ($75 per person) can be purchased here.

Please plan to join us on Saturday, July 23, in Breslin Park, located at the corner of Lexington Road and Payne Street. Volunteers will begin at 8:30 a.m. working in the wooded area around the perimeter of the park. This area has become a dumping ground and volunteers will work to remove the debris and clutter. We’ll also be sprucing up other areas of the park.

The Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) is pleased to announce the return of the Annual Buy Local Fair on Saturday, July 30, from 12:00pm – 6:00pm at Louisville Water Tower Park, 3005 River Road. Presented by Louisville Water Company with support from Amish Hills Furniture, Louisville Metro Council and many sponsors, admission to the Buy Local Fair is free. Some new highlights this year will be Carmichael’s Bookstore unveiling their “book mobile” created from an old Frito Lay truck and live demonstrations from the Derby City Street Curling Club.

JCPS students return to the classroom in just over four weeks, on August 10. United Crescent Hill Ministries (UCHM) is gathering monetary and backpack donations to support the families in our community so that everyone is ready for the upcoming school year. They are asking community members to sponsor a child/children with a $20 donation per child and a donation of a new backpack. All financial or backpack donations are appreciated. The Emergency Assistance Committee Members will purchase the needed school supplies based on donations received and distribute them to families.
To make a donation for the UCHM school supply drive, sponsors can visit UCHM’s website, or send checks to 150 South State Street, Louisville, KY 40206 with the memo line “school supplies”. Saturday, July 9: Louisville Ballet presents Ballet Bound Audition Tour in partnership with Olmsted Parks. The Ballet Bound program provides young dancers the opportunity to study classical ballet - FREE of charge - in Louisville Ballet's downtown studios. This is an outdoor audition workshop to identify approximately 20 dancers for the 2022-2023 Ballet Bound Class. The auditions are open to all children ages 7-9.
