1. BBB continues to receive reports from consumers regarding employment offers from Navis Worldwide. This is a reshipping scam. If you see any work-from-home job listings that involve receiving other people’s packages or mail directly to your home, report the listing to BBB at bbb.org/scamtracker

2. BBB warns of employment scams that take place over messaging apps. If a “recruiter” contacts you and asks you to download a messaging app such as Telegram, be very wary. Victims have been scammed by fake recruiters who claim to need their personal and financial information for new hire paperwork; these victims then have their identities stolen. Research any job offer first, be careful with your personal information, and beware of “easy hires” – companies who want to hire you without meeting you or conducting a job interview.

3. A consumer reported receiving an email with a fake invoice for Best Buy’s Geek Squad. The consumer contacted Best Buy directly, who confirmed the email was fraudulent. If you receive an unexpected invoice via email, do not click on any links. Contact the company directly to verify the email/invoice.

4. A consumer received a cashier’s check in connection with a new job and was instructed to cash the check and send a portion to a third party. This is a fake check scam. Be wary of any new job opportunity that sends you a cashier’s check with instructions to send part of the money to someone else; the check is likely fraudulent.

5. BBB has received reports of more puppy scams in the area. When buying a new pet, make sure you see the animal in person first, check the breeder’s credentials and references, and only pay with a secured method such as a credit card. Adopting from an accredited charity is also an excellent way to find your next pet!

6. BBB received a report from a consumer who encountered a vanity award scam. Vanity award scams attempt to get victims to pay a fee to receive their award, trophy, plaque, etc. Before accepting an award, research the company offering it, know the nomination process, and check for any payment requirements.

7. Consumers continue to report receiving fake Publisher’s Clearing House phone calls. The real Publisher’s Clearing House only notifies their winners by mail, not by phone. Any “sweepstakes organization” that asks for money upfront to claim a grand prize is very likely a scam.

8. A local consumer was recently the victim of a romance scam, losing hundreds of dollars to a potential online suitor who claimed to encounter financial emergencies. When it comes to online dating, don’t send money or personal information to anyone you haven’t met in person, and never give someone your credit card information to book a plane ticket to visit you.  

9. BBB warns of a Facebook Marketplace scam. Consumers report that when selling big ticket items on Facebook Marketplace, they have been contacted by buyers who offer to pay by a payment app, but first the seller needs to upgrade their account to a “business account” in order to accept the transfer. This is a scam that actually attempts to trick the seller into sending the buyer money.

10.   Scammers are using deepfake technology to create videos that convince victims to hand over large amounts of money. The latest scam looks like business mogul Elon Musk endorsing an investment plan. The video is fake, and the investment is a scam. Don’t fall for it!
