“We’re asking the public to help us remain a shelter that doesn’t euthanize homeless pets simply because we are out of room,” said Ashley Book, interim shelter director. “Right now, our priority is reuniting stray pets and their owners, and finding homes for the high number of adoptable shelter dogs and cats sitting in our kennels. We expect a high volume of pets to be turned over to LMAS over this long holiday weekend because we know fireworks and pets do not mix well.”

The shelter is requesting help from adopters, fosters, rescue partners, rescue organizations, and is waiving all adoption fees. All adoptable pets have been vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and spayed or neutered. Fostering helps free up kennel space, and the shelter is seeking both new and existing fosters.

“LMAS has worked very hard to maintain its status as a No Kill Shelter for time and space. We’re asking owners who are searching for a missing pet to visit the shelter. If you are planning to add a new four-legged friend to your family, make Animal House Adoption Center your first stop,” said Book.

Approved adopters can also foster-to-adopt select adoptable dogs. Adoption fees are waived but there is still a review and approval process. Jefferson County residents must also purchase a one-year, renewable pet license - a requirement of the Louisville Animal Ordinance. LMAS’ Animal House Adoption Center is at 3516 Newburg Road. Walk-ins are welcome from noon to 6 p.m. daily.

Redemption fees are waived for unclaimed pets through July 6. Owners can claim their impounded pet Monday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. at the LMAS Harshaw Family Foundation Shelter, located at 3528 Newburg Road. Redemption fees will only be waived for pet owners with no previous violations, and cover microchipping, licensing and vaccination fees. Court fees will not be waived. LMAS will work with owners who have outstanding balances and want to reclaim their pet.

2022 Kentucky Shakespeare Festival in Central Park is longest season in company history

Kentucky Shakespeare, the Official Shakespeare Festival of the Commonwealth, kicked off the 62nd annual free Kentucky Shakespeare Festival on May 25 at the C. Douglas Ramey Amphitheater in Old Louisville’s Central Park. 

“We’re delighted to return for another magical season of our free Kentucky Shakespeare Festival in Central Park, and it will mark the longest run in the history of our company! The eleven-week season features 60 performances, six productions, all presented absolutely free to audience members. While we returned to Central Park in 2021 after a virtual 2020 summer season, we still look at this summer as a homecoming. It’s a time to continue to come together to connect, heal, and rebuild, while we experience the joy of this shared community arts experience together, under the stars - all summer long!” said Matt Wallace, Producing Artistic Director.

“We’ll kick off the main stage season with a lively production of Twelfth Night set in 1920’s New Orleans featuring a live jazz band onstage, followed by Richard III, the thrilling finale to our history cycle featuring Shakespeare’s iconic villain, and the hilarious Elizabethan farce The Merry Wives of Windsor. The season will again feature two weeks of rotating repertory in July in which all three productions will rotate nightly.”

In addition to the three main stage productions, Kentucky Shakespeare will present their Globe Players professional training program for high school students in Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Kyle Ware, plus a new production of Shakespeare in Dance from the Louisville Ballet choreographed by Roger Creel (this year inspired by As You Like It), and the Late Night Shakes Shakespearean improv comedy show from the Louisville Improvisors.

The Kids’ Globe tent will open an hour before every performance during the summer with free interactive arts-based activities tied to the production, and various community pre-show groups will perform at 7:15 p.m. nightly throughout the summer.

All performances are presented free of charge at Kentucky Shakespeare Festival in Central Park, the longest-running non-ticketed Shakespeare festival in the United States.

Kentucky Shakespeare’s 62nd season is dedicated to the memory of Thomas T. Noland, Jr. and Max G. Baumgardner whom we lost this year. Both served as Kentucky Shakespeare Board Chairmen and were longtime friends and supporters of the company.

A variety of 36 food trucks from the Louisville Food Truck Association will rotate nightly, plus Will’s Tavern (a Brown-Forman Bar) and Will’s Gift Shop.

The nightly schedule starts with Food Trucks opening at 6 p.m., Will’s Tavern, Will’s Gift Shop, and Kids’ Globe opening at 7 p.m., Community pre-show performance at 7:15 p.m. and the production begins at 8 p.m.

COVID in medium category

Louisville is holding steady in the “medium” or “yellow” COVID-19 community level category.  The CDC recommends residents in counties in the “medium” risk category to do the following: Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines. Get tested if you are showing symptoms. Talk to your health care provider about whether you need to wear a mask and take other precautions if you are at high risk for severe illness. The CDC is also recommending that travelers wear a well-fitting mask in public transportation areas.

Planting for the future - Apply for tree grants 

Louisville MSD Urban Reforestation Grants will pay for trees planted within MSD’s Drainage Service area including most of Jefferson County. The cities of Anchorage, Jeffersontown, St. Matthews, and Shively provide residents and businesses in those municipalities with stormwater/drainage services. Therefore, those four areas are not part of this grant program. MSD’s Urban Reforestation Grant Program is open to residents, organizations, companies and agencies. The MSD Urban Reforestation Program plants 1,000 trees annually by working with residents, businesses, municipal organizations and neighborhood associations. These trees redirect an average of 1.35 million gallons of stormwater away from the sewer system every year, decreasing sewer overflows into our waterways. By planting more trees, MSD not only absorbs stormwater but also reduces erosion and flooding, provides shade, reduces noise pollution and carbon dioxide in the air, and provides a habitat for nearby wildlife..

KYTC road work around District 10

U.S. 31E (Buechel Bypass): Right lane closure over the Norfolk Southern Railroad (mile point 10.4) due to findings from a routine inspection in 2021. It’s not an active construction zone, and the affected area isn’t visible while driving over the bridge. KYTC has secured the money and has a signed agreement with the railroad to perform the necessary repair work. A bid opening is scheduled for May 26 for the bridge repair. Once the contractor is selected, they will need to get a separate agreement with the railroad. There is no completion date set for the project at this time. Motorists can use Bardstown Road as a detour.

Louisville’s Senior Nutrition Program Congregate Nutrition Sites and Meals on Wheels, needs volunteers

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. Sites require a one-day advance reservation. See the updated list of open congregate sites.  The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities. Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Due to Covid-19, guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Louisville Water Company water meter replacement continues 

From LWC: Louisville Water is in a three-year project to upgrade our water meters. In the coming weeks, our contractors and employees will do work in a portion of District 10 to replace older meters with new ones. 

The map above shows where LWC will be working and includes Barret Avenue, Bates Court, Baxter Avenue, Castlewood Avenue, Castlewood Dell, Dahlia Drive, Eastern Parkway, Ellison Avenue, Hawthorn Hill, Royal Avenue, and Summit Avenue. 

As part of our ongoing mission to provide the highest quality water and service, Louisville Water will upgrade the water meter at no cost to you. Meter upgrades will take place Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

We will knock on your door before work begins. Water will be turned off for a short period, usually less than 30 minutes. We will also leave a note on your door when we finish.

Louisville Water contractor, Grid One Solutions, will do most of the meter upgrades. Their vehicles will have an orange and black Grid One logo and Louisville Water contractor signs. All workers will have Grid One identification badges. Read more information on the project.

Adoption fees are also waived for adult dogs weighing 40 pounds or more and all adoptions include a free gift. July 2 - CommUNITY Freedom Fest 

Join Slava Ukraini International, RIOTHEART, and the Louisville Nature Center for the first annual CommUNITY Freedom Fest July 2! This event brings small businesses, market vendors, artists, musicians and non-profits together for one day of fun for the whole family, while supporting these businesses and helping them grow. For the kids there will be food, live music, games and activities as well as a story hour with the Louisville Free Public Library! Adults can enjoy the beer tent while checking out some great local businesses! The event is 1 to 4 p.m. at the Louisville Nature Center.

Caterpillars and Butterflies! Saturday, July 2, 10 a.m. to noon. There are hundreds of different caterpillar species found in Kentucky! Many of these caterpillars have host plants, or a specific plant they live on and live off of. Monarchs rely on Milkweed and the Spicebush Swallowtail Caterpillars can be found on, you guessed it, Spicebush! On this hike, Luke will introduce the special relationship these caterpillars have with different plants.

Wellness Soundwalk, Saturday, July 9, 10 a.m. to noon. The Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, known as forest bathing, is about being purposeful in nature and getting in tune with your surroundings; reviving a sensitivity to the environment that helped humans survive during their early history. Leave behind your phone, camera or any other distraction as Luke guides you through the forest, helping you tap into your senses. By focusing on soundscapes of the forest, you will improve your awareness of how environmental sounds can impact your daily life and your understanding of the world.

Cultural Pass

The 2022 Cultural Pass is presented by the Fund for the Arts, in partnership with Metro Government, the Arts and Culture Alliance (ACA), and the Louisville Free Public Library. This free program supports and encourages summer learning by providing access to 57 of Kentuckiana’s arts and cultural institutions for children and young adults up to age 21 in Jefferson and Bullitt counties in Kentucky and Clark, Floyd, and Harrison counties in Indiana. The Cultural Pass is valid from June 1 to September 4 and provides pass-holders exclusive access to activities both in-person and virtually. Learn more about Cultural Pass. 

Summer Reading

Presented by the Library Foundation, the Library’s annual Summer Reading Program is a free 10-week program that encourages kids and teens to read for fun over the summer by offering prizes and incentives. Every child—from infant through 12^th grade—who completes the program will receive an LFPL adventure pack or journal. In addition, completers will receive passes to local attractions and sporting events like the Kentucky Science Center, Squire Boone Caverns, Louisville Bats, Racing Louisville FC, and select UofL sports, as well as sweet treats from Fazoli’s, Ehrler’s, Raising Cane’s, and Georgia’s Sweet Potato Pie Co. To complete the program, school-aged children simply read ten books, teens read six books, and preschool-aged children and younger need to read, or have read to them, 20 books. July 15 - Cinema Safari Returns to the Louisville Zoo

The Louisville Zoo’s Friday night movie series, Cinema Safari, presented by Great Clips, returns. The series launches on July 15 with “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (PG-13) and continues two weeks later on July 29 with “Elf” (PG). Both movies are part of the Zoo’s new Santa’s Summer Safari event series. Zoo guests will also enjoy late summer showings of “A Bug’s Life” (G) on August 12 and “Encanto” (PG) on September 9.

Cinema Safari, presented by Great Clips, will occur in the Oasis Field at the Zoo, with the area opening at 8 p.m. and the movie starting at sundown. Snacks, drinks and popcorn will be available for purchase before the movie. Don’t forget to pack your blanket or lawn chairs.

Guests attending the event may enter the Zoo any time after 5 p.m. and walk around until the Oasis Field opens at 8 p.m. Movie nights are FREE to Zoo members and only $5 after 5 p.m. for non-members. Parking is $6 for non-members. These discounted tickets can only be purchased at the Zoo’s admission windows. 

Many of the Zoo’s animal residents will not be visible as they adhere to their regular nighttime schedules.

Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services is accepting appointments for the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, or LIHWAP. LIHWAP is a temporary emergency water/wastewater program intended to help low income households and families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jefferson County residents meeting eligibility can call the automated scheduler at 991-8391 or schedule online.

Drops of Kindness Program - For customers who may still have an outstanding balance, Louisville Water has the Drops of Kindness Program, which offers flexible, no-interest payment plans and additional help from community agencies through the Louisville Water Foundation. Louisville Metro LG&E Assistance is available for eligible residents who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $35,000 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under the Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD, through July 31. For more information, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

July 2 - Come shop this weekend and support the 2023 South Louisville Art Crawl

Margaret’s Fine Consignment will be holding a pop-up shop at Iroquois Amphitheater on Saturday, July 2, to benefit next year’s Fund for the Arts South Louisville Art Crawl.

Margaret’s Fine Consignment, a Louisville staple for more than 30 years, will set up racks of clothes and accessories on the stage at Iroquois Amphitheater from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The proceeds will go to support the 2023 South Louisville Art Crawl.

District 21 hosted the first South Louisville Art Crawl in April 2022, and this was the first art crawl of its kind in Louisville Metro. The event was part of the Fund for the Art’s new ‘Arts in Neighborhoods’ initiative. Around 300 people attended the full-day event, which included free trolley tours of several different South Louisville businesses and highlighted dozens of local artists, performers, and musicians.

Councilwoman Nicole George is thankful that Margaret’s Fine Consignment is putting together such a fun event that will continue to benefit the community by supporting next year’s South Louisville Art Crawl.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips. These LMPD divisions serve sections of District 10: Link to LMPD Fourth Division  Link to LMPD Fifth Division Link to LMPD Sixth Division LMPD working in District 10 have asked us to share this reminder: please call the LMPD non-emergency number, instead of sending an email, if you're seeing suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Sending emails to LMPD delays response, and officers need to be dispatched for the activity. These citations continue the nuisance abatement process. Are you looking for a public place to exchange items you've sold online? Do you share custody of a child and are looking for somewhere to exchange custody? The Louisville Metro Police Department is providing MetroSWAP Zones outside of some Division offices. There is 24 hour video surveillance. LMPD recommends: Agree to meet the person ONLY at a MetroSWAP station. Meet only during daylight hours. Tell someone you trust where you are meeting and at what time. Meet in the parking lot. There will be two designated parking spots at each location for use. Make this interaction brief and to the point. Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
