Dear Neighbor,

Even with Summer still technically four days away, it looks like we're already in for a scorcher this Father's Day Weekend. It is still the weekend we recognize all the dads who have played a role in our lives and made us feel like family.

Please be careful in this record-setting June heat. Check on elderly neighbors and family if you can. There are lots of ways to stay cool and keep out of the heat at our parks, pools and splash pads around Louisville Metro. Please be considerate that everyone is trying to keep cool anyway they can.

This weekend we begin local Pride celebrations that recognize our LGBTQIA+ friends and neighbors.

Sunday and Monday we will mark Juneteenth for the second time as a national holiday. Metro Government offices will be closed and services delayed on Monday in observance.

Check events and happenings before you go out - in case they cancel due to the heat. Several events have been cancelled or postponed already.

Have a great weekend,

Brent Signature

Ways to beat the heat!

The National Weather Service forecasts temperatures well into the 90s and high humidity this week, which means heat index values will exceed 100 degrees. Most heat-related illnesses involve the elderly or individuals who have chronic illnesses, but also at risk are children, athletes, and outdoor workers.

Cooling centers

Eight Neighborhood Place locations throughout Louisville will be serving as cooling relief centers for those needing to get out of the heat. To find the nearest location, call Metro311 or 574-5000 or visit http://www.louisvilleky.gov/NeighborhoodPlace/

Louisville Metro Senior Nutrition program congregate sites operate 14 senior congregate sites for seniors 60 and older which provide a nutritious lunchtime meal and activities at air-conditioned facilities. Visit https://louisvilleky.gov/government/resilience-and-community-services for a listing of sites, hours and phone numbers to reserve a lunch.

Louisville Free Public Library’s 17 branches are open and operating at regular hours for people who need respite from the heat. Find a branch here: https://www.lfpl.org/branches/index.htm

White Flag

The Coalition for the Homeless coordinates the Operation White Flag program to ensure that individuals experiencing houselessness can find shelter during severe weather. Operation White Flag goes into effect when the temperature or heat index is 95 degrees or higher. A white flag flies outside each participating shelter to show that Operation White Flag is in effect. All persons needing shelter can stay at the participating Operation White Flag shelter while weather conditions persist.

  • Wayside Christian Mission (accepts cats and dogs), 432 E. Jefferson St.
  • Vincent de Paul (for men only), 1034 S. Jackson St.
  • Salvation Army Center (day shelter only), 911 S. Brook St.

Day Shelter space is available at the Salvation Army and Wayside Christian Mission, as well as shelters dedicated for men, women and youth. Visit https://louisvilleky.gov/government/resilience-and-community-services for a full listing. Representatives of multiple organizations visit encampments regularly to provide connections to shelter, medical care and social services.

When Operation White Flag is in effect, TARC waves fare for those individuals who need transportation to one of the participating shelters. The passenger should alert the driver when boarding and can ride to the nearest shelter fare-free.

water

With the extreme heat this week here are some hydration tips from LWC!

  • Drink before you’re thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty, your body has lost up to five cups of water.
  • Grab a reusable water bottle. Keep a reusable bottle with you and fill, drink, and repeat throughout the day. Our drinking water, Louisville Pure Tap™, is the best value to stay hydrated, costing less than a penny a gallon. You also may want to fill and freeze a plastic water bottle so you can drink refreshing Pure Tap as the ice melts.
  • Drink water when sweating. Anytime you sweat, your body is losing water. Drink plenty of Pure Tap before, during, and after exercise.
  • Don't mistake thirst for hunger. It's easy to confuse the two because sometimes you may feel hungry, but your body is actually thirsty.

How do you know if you're hydrated? Check the color of your urine. The more transparent it is, the more hydrated you are. When in doubt, consult a doctor about the recommended water intake specifically for your body.

June 20 | Waste Collection Changes

CitySeal

This year Juneteenth, June 19th falls on a Sunday which means there will be no waste collection (Recycle or Yard Waste either) on Monday, June 20th. Waste collections will be delayed by one day that week.

Be sure to use the Recycle Coach app to keep up with any unexpected delays or changes in waste collection. You can also learn "what goes where" and get notified about collections and drop-off events.

Residents who rely on private waste haulers should consult those haulers about holiday collection schedules.

Aug 1 | Deadline for MSD Tree Program

Planting for the future

Apply for tree grants with MSD’s Urban Reforestation Program

Louisville MSD Urban Reforestation Grants will pay for trees planted within MSD’s Drainage Service area including most of Jefferson County. The cities of Anchorage, Jeffersontown, St. Matthews, and Shively provide residents and businesses in those municipalities with stormwater/drainage services. Therefore, those four areas are not part of this grant program.

MSD’s Urban Reforestation Grant Program is open to residents, organizations, companies and agencies. Download the Urban Reforestation Grant Application or visit LouisvilleMSD.org/trees for more information. The application deadline is Monday, August 1, 2022, at 5 PM. Please contact Sarah Duker at Sarah.Duker@LouisvilleMSD.org or 502.540.6248 with any questions.

The MSD Urban Reforestation Program plants 1,000 trees annually by working with residents, businesses, municipal organizations and neighborhood associations. These trees redirect an average of 1.35 million gallons of storm-water away from the sewer system every year, decreasing sewer overflows into our waterways. By planting more trees, MSD not only absorbs storm-water but also reduces erosion and flooding, provides shade, reduces noise pollution and carbon dioxide in the air, and provides a habitat for nearby wildlife.

Baxter Ave Bridge CLOSED (60 days)

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists that repairs to the bridge carrying Baxter Avenue (U.S. 31E) over South Fork, a branch of Beargrass Creek, are scheduled to begin Monday, May 16, in Jefferson County.

The repairs will require a full closure of the bridge and a traffic detour of up to 60 days. Weather or other unforeseen factors may delay the project timeline.

The bridge is located next to the former L&N Railroad elevated train platform. Signs in the area will direct drivers to utilize East Liberty Street and Lexington Road during the bridge closure. Drivers should use caution while traveling through the work zone.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Visit goky.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
