The Kentucky Derby is a sporting event with a huge emphasis on fashion and socializing and that's what initially drew women to the race track in the early years. For over 100 years, people have given careful and serious thought to what to wear to the Derby. Let's take a look at the styles that graced the track through the ages.

GHOSTING EX-HUSBAND GET'S WHAT'S
COMING TO HIM
A woman calls the customer service department of a telephone company about a bill she received in the mail from them. She's puzzled because she doesn't have service with this company. In fact, this telephone company doesn't even provide service in the small town where she lives.
The customer service representative (CSR) informs her that the charge is for a one-time $49 connection fee for a cable TV box. The caller explains that she doesn't have service with the company. The CSR says that she does and it started about a month ago. After doing some research, the CSR tells her that someone got a 3-year contract for TV and Internet in her name.
It turns out it was her no-good ex-husband who had cheated on her, stole from her, and divorced her after he had milked her for just about everything of value she owned. Her lawyer had been trying to track her ex-husband down to serve him with a lawsuit but he ghosted her. He moved to another state, changed his email address, phone number and blocked her on all social media. The ex's friends and family claimed they didn't know where he moved with his mistress.
THIEF
The CSR informs her that if she cancels the service, she will be responsible for cancellation fees and other charges. Empathizing with her situation, the CSR suggests options for her. She could remove her ex's access to the account, add a password, downgrade the TV and internet to the bare essentials and redirect the free TV gift from his address to her address.
That's when it dawns on this lady that the CSR has access to information that she and her attorney have been desperately seeking for months. The location of her worthless ex-husband. She asks if they are allowed to give her the ex's contact information. The oh-so helpful CSR happily informs her that as the account holder, she is entitled to unrestricted access to the address, phone numbers and email addresses associated with the account in her name.
The caller was ecstatic that she now knew her ex-husband's whereabouts and could have him served with the lawsuit. It's worth noting that the ex was a die-hard hockey fan and the cable services were cut off right in the middle of his favorite team's game. When he called the cable company to complain, he find out that he'd been removed from the account, a PIN has been added and he has obviously been found by his ex-wife and her attorney.
I love a story with a happy ending, don't you? Karma is the universes way of balancing things out.

HAPPY WORK ANNIVERSARY!
Kyle, Shalanna, Jared, Scott, Heather, Keturah, Ginny, Sonya & trainer
These Metro Council staff members recently completed CPR/AED training hosted by the American Red Cross. Their certification will last 2 years. An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It's a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. City Hall is equipped with one AED located in the 2nd floor lobby adjacent to the elevators.
A big thank you to all those who volunteered to take the training class and learn the life-saving techniques. You are the Metro Council's ALL-STARS!
HEALTH & WELLNESS is a new feature to the Council Chronicle with the goal of finding simple and easy ways to make ourselves just a little bit healthier everyday. None of us are getting any younger and thanks to the pandemic, many people are dealing with anxiety, depression and unwanted weight gain.
HEALTHY HABITS FOR A LONGER LIFE
Do you sit staring at a computer screen for hours each work day, only getting up to go to the restroom, to go to lunch or to get a bag of chips, candy or a soda when you're desperate for an energy boost? If your job keeps you tethered to a desk or computer, it's very easy to slip into bad habits, whether you're working at home, just a few steps from the refrigerator, or in a downtown office where the vending machine only stocks junk food. Moving too little and snacking too much while you work can lead to multiple health problems. Here, nutritionists share what three things you should avoid if you sit all day.
MINDLESS SNACKING
The right snack can give you energy to get through the day, but be mindful about what you eat. It is best to plan your snacks so you are not grabbing something that has excess calories and zero nutritional value. Choose a snack that you love the taste of, but won't leave you feeling guilty after consuming it. Nutritionists suggest an apple with two tablespoons of peanut butter and one tablespoon of chocolate chips for a late afternoon pick me up. Or how about cheese and crackers, hummus and fresh vegetables with some crunch like baby carrots or celery sticks. If you want a sweet snack, try some fruit and yogurt or fruit with nut butter. Craving a protein snack? Try a slice of turkey or Greek yogurt.
Nutrition experts advise that one or two snacks a day are beneficial because they help keep blood sugar levels stable and keep you from feeling ravenous in the evening. Snacking out of boredom may cause you to overeat eat without even realizing it. Keep a stress ball or other objects on your desk to distract you when you get bored, tired or anxious.
SITTING DOWN ALL DAY
When you work a desk job, you spend long hours sitting and staring at a computer screen, but these sedentary habits can have negative effects on your physical and mental health. Sitting for hours will make you feel sluggish, can cause back pain and can make your joints stiff. It is recommended that instead of sitting all day, you get up at least once an hour to stretch your legs and get your blood flowing. It doesn't matter what you do, you could walk up and down the stairs, or walk around the office, as long as you move.
 |
|
Also, try breaking up your exercise routine by doing two or three shorter workouts rather than one big one. Do 15 minutes in the morning, 15 at lunch and 15 after work instead of doing a long 45-minute workout.
|
Shorter workouts keep your heart pumping all day and have a better effect on your overall metabolic rate, as well as being more manageable.
DEHYDRATION
Drinking enough water everyday is vital for a healthy life. Dehydration can lead to unclear thinking, mood changes and issues like constipation and kidney stones. There is no official recommendation for the amount of water adults should drink each day, it varies by age, sex and other factors, says the CDC, but the National Academy of Medicine has said adequate water intake is about 131 ounces a day for men and 95 ounces for women. This includes water that's in other drinks and in food.
Studies show that drinking enough water can also prevent you from feeling hungry. A part of our brain called the hypothalamus tends to confuse thirst with hunger. Unsweetened iced tea, chamomile tea, ginger tea, and seltzer all count count as water intake.
However, sugary sodas, sweetened waters, juices and sports and energy drinks do not count.
A final tip for the office worker is don't forget to eat during the day. Some people get so busy that they forget to eat (I thought this was a myth) and end up starving at the end of the work day, which only leads to poor food choices and overeating at dinnertime.

Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady wearing a Derby hat
Kentucky Derby fashions play as important a role in the Derby experience as the race. Every first Saturday in May, Churchill Downs is flooded with the most fashionable of spectators to observe the Run for the Roses.
Most hats are functional accessories that shield your face from the sun. But a Derby hat is a work of art meant to adorn your head and get you noticed. It is a keepsake headpiece that transcends time and can be passed down from generation to generation. A Derby hat is the star of an ensemble.

THE CHOPPING BLOCK
Did this young lady decide to do a cooking demonstration on the subway train or she just got hungry on the way home from the grocery store and decided to make a snack? Maybe she couldn't wait until she got home to try out her new cutting board? Your guess is as good as mine.
I just hope she's not cutting onions...
The Kentucky Derby dates back to 1875 and as such is the longest running sporting event in United States history. "It’s rich history transcends the Kentucky Derby from just a sporting event, making it a celebration of southern culture." The race is sometimes called The Run for the Roses and is known as The most exciting two minutes in sports. It has continued, uninterrupted, even when coinciding with major historical events like The Great Depression and World Wars I & II.
 |
The Kentucky Derby’s long history began in 1872, when Meriwether Lewis Clark, the grandson of the prominent William Clark (of Lewis and Clark), traveled to Europe. While in England, he attended the Epsom Derby, a well-known horse race run since 1780, and also socialized with the French Jockey Club, a group that developed another popular horse race, the Grand Prix de Paris Longchamps. Clark was inspired by his experiences abroad and was determined to create a spectacle horse racing event in the United States. With the help of his uncle’s John & Henry Churchill, who gifted Clark the necessary land to develop a racetrack, and by organizing a group of local race fans to be named the Louisville Jockey Club, Clark and his new club raised funds to build a permanent racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky.
 |
The tradition of the Kentucky Derby hat began at the inception of the race by the founder who wanted to ensure a good crowd at his event. At the time the race track had a reputation as being unsavory so Clark looked to other successful races for inspiration. According to the Kentucky Derby Museum, he loaded up a wagon full of high society women and they went door-to-door telling their friends, ‘We’re going to have a picnic at the racetrack." And it worked. The wealthy citizens of Kentucky flocked to the racetrack in their finery to see and be seen.
 |
On May 17th, 1875, the racetrack opened its gates and the Louisville Jockey Club sponsored the very first Kentucky Derby. A total of fifteen, three-year-old Thoroughbred horses raced one and a half miles in front of a cheering crowd of approximately 10,000 spectators. Aristides was the first winner of the Kentucky Derby, by two lengths. His jockey was Oliver Lewis, his trainer was Ansel Williamson, and his owner was H.P. McGrath. Both Aristides' jockey and trainer were black. Aristides's time of 2 minutes and 37.75 seconds was at the time a world record for the distance.
The present day Kentucky Derby has seen a massive numbers increase since its inception in the late 1800's. The Kentucky Derby held at Churchill Downs sees an estimated average of 50,000 spectators.
The first Derby winner in 1875 received a purse of $2,850. Last year's winner of the 2021 Derby received a $1.8 million payout. A massive increase from earlier Derbies.

Seth Phillips protesting annoying things in life
TRUTH BOMBS are described in the urban dictionary as surprising but true statements. A fact or piece of knowledge that, when told to a listener, is devastating to the listener's argument or world view.
New Yorker Seth Phillips has gained a cult following for his truth bombs that protest anything from loud engines, phones that shatter easily, “x” in espresso, and other very specific, small things that add up to our daily lives. He has a whopping 7.5 million followers on social media. Phillips has gone mainstream enough that the fast fashion giant Zara has capitalized on his popularity by selling "Dude With Sign" shirts in their summer collection.
And, of course, there’s always something new to protest against. Such as, hot coffee in summer or verifying you’re not a robot online. The Council Chronicle will now feature these truth bombs in each edition. Those of us who have had enough of everything will get a chuckle out of this series.
