We're Proud To Serve You In Representing District 22
Greetings District 22,
Since taking office I have worked for infrastructure and quality of life improvements in Fern Creek. As your representative I have pushed for massive investments in Fern Creek Park, supported efforts to improve our roads prior to the start of new developments and helped to beautify our neighborhoods. One of my early accomplishments was improving and expanding the Fern Creek Library at its former location in the Cedar Springs Shopping Center back in 2006. Unfortunately, our community took a step back in 2019 when the Fern Creek Library was abruptly closed.
Since that day I have been committed to restoring library services to Fern Creek. My focus has been finding a new “forever” home for the construction of a bigger and better library than the previous one. Starting in 2019, I began the process of meeting with community leaders, Metro Government department directors as well as council colleagues. In the same year that the library was closed, I was able to get an agreement with the Metro Council that the restoration of a Fern Creek Library was a top priority, and I was able to work with my caucus colleagues to set aside funding for a study that would be used to document the need for a bigger library based on population growth in our area of town.
In 2020 and 2021 we added even more funding towards the project. With over $1 million in funding secured, we now have enough funding to be able to plan as well as purchase a parcel for a future library. Over the course of the past two years I have visited a number of potential sites, met with Library director, Lee Burchfield, as well as others representing various properties. Throughout this journey I have been blessed with the unwavering dedication of the volunteers of the Friends of the Fern Creek Library. They have helped lead the charge to fill the void of services in our area.
Today, I am excited to share with you that we are closer than ever to achieving our goal of building a permanent home for a new Fern Creek / Southeastern Jefferson County branch library. On Thursday, April 28, 2022 we read into the record an ordinance that will dedicate an additional $5 million towards the construction of a new Fern Creek Library. This funding while not enough to open the library, will fund construction of what I know will be a new gem for our community.
I am hopeful that with the passage of this ordinance, as well as continued work towards acquiring property for the library, we are just a few more years away from a vastly improved library!
With all of that said – I want to take a moment and ask anyone interested in this project to make sure that you…
1) Email me at Robin.Engel@louisvilleky.gov and request to subscribe to my e-mail newsletter. For the latest updates on this and other projects in the district.
2) Please, and most importantly, consider joining the Friends of the Fern Creek Library. The Friends of the Fern Creek Library can be reached at ferncreekfriends19@gmail.com. This group is led by Lyn Dean and has supported the library long before the closure and they will be a vital part in the continued development and prosperity of the new location.
We still have much work to do to get us across the finish line, but today is a much brighter day and hopefully the precursor to even more great advancements for Southeastern Jefferson County.
Regards,
Robin J. Engel
