April 14 Storm Debris Collection Plan

Residents of Jefferson County are invited to drop off storm debris for free. This includes all tree debris and bulky waste from storm damage. Since all tree debris will be composted, it must be separate from bulky waste for easy off-loading at each site. Residents will be asked to provide their name and address at the drop-off sites: Public Works Yard, 10500 Lower River Road (enter from Bethany Lane) Charlie Vettiner Park, 5550 Charlie Vettiner Park Road (by disc golf course) Fern Creek Park, 8703 Ferndale Road Highview Park, 7120 Briscoe Lane Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue Storm debris will be accepted through April 30 (or longer if necessary), Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Household hazardous waste will not be accepted. Contractors and businesses who are hauling debris are invited to use the Waste Reduction Center for the usual fee.  All yard waste set out for curbside collection in the Urban Services District must follow the regular guidelines: limbs must be less than four feet long and less than two inches in diameter. All material must be in a container or paper bag or tied into bundles weighing less than 60 pounds.

Louisville Parks seeks citizen feedback to develop long-term aquatics plan - first meeting is Monday

Louisville Parks and Recreation is partnering with Brandstetter Carroll Inc. to develop a long-term aquatics master plan. This will include future usage and investment ideas and strategies for the city’s current aquatics facilities (four existing outdoor pools and the Mary T. Meagher indoor facility). Plans for current and future programming based on the interests and needs of the community as well as recommendations for new aquatics facilities to fill existing gaps in pool and programming access will also be included. 

Louisville Parks and Recreation is looking to gather as much citizen feedback as possible to ensure this plan meets the needs of the entire community. Public suggestions can be provided through online and paper surveys and/or participation in one of the four open houses listed below.

Louisville Parks considering future of Cherokee Golf Course - public meetings April 20 and 25

Louisville Parks and Recreation and Councilmember Cassie Chambers Armstrong are hosting two public meetings in April to discuss the future of Cherokee Golf Course. Cherokee Golf Course was founded in 1895, four years after the design firm of noted landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and the city of Louisville established Cherokee Park. The city of Louisville currently has 10 municipally owned golf courses. Cherokee, one of three nine-hole courses in the system, is currently being operated by Louisville Parks and Recreation staff and is the only course without a lease agreement with a PGA professional or non-profit organization. Attempts to bid out the management of the course in 2019 and 2020 did not yield any viable options. During that process, Parks and Recreation received a proposal from the Olmsted Parks Conservancy to enhance Cherokee Park by making improvements and investments to revitalize the golf course property into active and diverse parkland. Attendees of the public meetings will be introduced to this idea and be able to share their feedback. Parks and Recreation officials stress that no decisions on the future of the course have been made or will be made at these public meetings. Receiving input from the community is the first step in the process, and any decisions must follow the existing ordinance, 42.44. That process concludes with any proposed changes to the course being approved by Metro Council. Receiving public input on the future of Cherokee Golf Course will be the only item for discussion. Comments regarding the future of Cherokee Golf Course and course operations may also be provided by e-mail. For centuries, wildlife, including buffalo, migrated throughout Kentucky, pounding out the road we call Preston Street and Highway. Indigenous groups, explorers, and settlers relied on the compacted road as they ventured north and west.  The St. Joseph Neighborhood Association is fundraising to create and install an original buffalo sculpture in the median. Fan Fair annual fan collection underway for local seniors, people with disabilities

Monetary donations accepted through May 27, fan giveaway event to be held on June 11 Louisville Metro Office for Aging & Disabled Citizens (OADC) and KIPDA Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living are seeking donations to help purchase electric box fans to be distributed to those in need as the weather gets warmer.  The fans will be distributed at a Fan Fair event in Louisville on June 11. Residents, businesses, faith-based organizations, and other groups wanting to make monetary contributions can donate safely and quickly online at louisvilleky.gov/FanFair. The Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is available to individuals and families who earned less than $66,000 in 2021.Individuals can have their taxes prepared online. To schedule an appointment for in-person tax assistance, call 305-0005. AARP Tax-Aide’s mission is to serve any person who comes through the door, with special attention to those 60 and older. AARP Tax Aide is open at nine sites by drop-off appointments only.

Louisville’s Senior Nutrition Program provides Congregate Nutrition Sites and Meals on Wheels, needs volunteers

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals.Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. The senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, can be found by calling the same number above or by signing up at the RCS page. Sites require a one-day advanced reservation. The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities. Part-time nutrition center supervisors are also needed to help with ordering meals and supplies, training volunteers and organizing activities for seniors. For more information, call 574-6420.

Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services is accepting appointments for the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, or LIHWAP. LIHWAP is a temporary emergency water/wastewater program intended to help low income households and families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jefferson County residents meeting eligibility can call the automated scheduler at 991-8391 or schedule online.

Drops of Kindness Program
For customers who may still have an outstanding balance, Louisville Water has the Drops of Kindness Program, which offers flexible, no-interest payment plans and additional help from community agencies through the Louisville Water Foundation. Read more about the program or call 583-6610.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $35,000 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Due to Covid-19, guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Update on Louisville Water Company water meter replacement

From LWC: Louisville Water is in the early stages of a three-year project to upgrade our water meters. In the coming weeks, our contractors and employees will do work in a portion of District 10 to replace older meters with new ones. The map at left shows where we will be working: Bartlett Road, Bartlett Court, Freestone Court, along Breckinridge Lane between Bartlett Road and Watterson Elementary School, Heavrin Avenue, and Stigwood Court. Dog of the Week: Trigger When it comes to charming others, Trigger never misses his mark. A friendly big guy with a sweet side, it doesn't take much to win him over - just booty scratches and plenty of them. Trigger gets along great with other dogs, so a four-legged sibling would be cool but not required. Trigger's adoption fees is waived for an approved adopter and a free wag bag is included: Dog crate, harness, and a bag of food. Trigger is an approximately two-year-old American Bulldog mix who weighs 82 pounds. He's already neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. Dog and cat testing are available by request. You don't need an appointment to meet Trigger, visit Animal House Adoption Center, 3516 Newburg Road, from noon to 6 p.m. daily. Walk ins are welcome.

District 10 events

April 16 - Give A Day for the Jim King Trail with the Louisville Zoo

He's getting started early, but won't need a grabber to pick up litter! This lobster-sized crawdad was photographed Thursday morning along the Jim King Trail! Estimated between 10 and 12 inches long, this crayfish is much larger than most observed in Kentucky. The Louisville Zoo will be participating in the Mayor’s Give a Day project this year on Saturday, April 16 with a cleanup along the Jim King Trail. The trail runs behind the Zoo’s property and along Bear Grass Creek, likely the home to that massive mudbug.  Between 8 and 11 a.m., volunteers will clean up and tidy up this natural area along the pathway. All participants will need to sign in and complete a Zoo Volunteer Waiver. April 16 - Audubon Park 51st Annual Dogwood Festival 

Please join us at Henderson Park (3219 Wren Rd) Saturday, April 16 for the Audubon Park 51st Annual Dogwood Festival sponsored by Independence Bank. Louisville Parks and Recreation, TreesLouisville and Louisville Grows are proud to announce the first-ever TreeFest: An Arbor Day Celebration!

Taking place Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Joe Creason Park, TreeFest will be a day dedicated to all things trees!

There will be volunteer opportunities, tree giveaways, tree planting/pruning demos, live music, kids tree climbing, food, drinks, and many more activities for the whole family.

Food and beverage vendors at the event include West Sixth Brewing, Brooks Hill Winery, Copper Kitchen Food Truck, and Garden Girl Foods. Live music to be provided by Jossie Lauren, and Karaoke by Noraebar.

Wild Lights at the Louisville Zoo through June 5

The Louisville Zoo is again hosting one of the largest lantern festivals in the nation — Wild Lights—through June 5. Tickets are on sale at louisvillezoo.org/wildlights. 

Wild Lights features a variety of animal lanterns, including mammals, birds, and insects, a 98-foot-long dragon, mythical Chinese creatures and promenade walk-throughs. Guests may also enjoy interactive photos opportunities like illuminated angel wings, color changing swings, a kaleidoscope, and many more.  

The 48-night immersive cultural experience that kicks off the Zoo’s 53rd season will also include unique handcrafted goods available for purchase, nightly cultural performances on the MetaZoo stage, and Asian-fusion cuisine.

The festival will be 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday nights through June 5. 

Louisville Nature Center 

From the Louisville Nature Center: Forty years ago, the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve was dedicated. Since then, the amount of use has increased tremendously! LNC maintains this urban forest and trails, but we receive no regular funding to do so. If you have enjoyed hiking in our forest, would you be willing to donate to help with upkeep? Funds will go toward bridge and sign repair, trail and tree maintenance, and native species planting. Whether you donate $5 or $500, every little bit helps. Let’s make the story come alive and go on a Story Immersion Adventure! City Nature Challenge- iNaturalist Bioblitz, Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. It’s time for another community science challenge! From April 29 to May 2, the City Nature Challenge is taking place in about 400 cities around the world during the same four-day period! For the first time, Louisville will be participating with other locations in Kentucky, Lexington-Fayette County and Madison County. On this hike you’ll learn about the biodiversity of the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve. You’ll be encouraged to take photos of plants, animals, fungi and other organisms and document your findings on iNaturalist. It's a Bioblitz, so let's have fun! Help us share the remarkable biodiversity our city and county sustains. Who knows, maybe we'll document more species than Lexington or Madison County! Know of a local non-profit needing lawn care equipment? 

Submissions are now open for the inaugural Lawn Care for Cleaner Air Community Equipment Grant Program. The grant will award a package of professional-powered, electric lawn equipment to a local non-profit organization. The package of equipment is valued at $1,256 and includes an electric mower, trimmer, blower, and extra rechargeable battery that powers all three tools. The Grant is an extension of Air Pollution Control District’s Lawn Care for Cleaner Air program, which incentivizes the purchase and use of electric-powered lawn equipment in order to reduce air pollution from gas-powered engines.

TreesLouisville's Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program continues

Thanks to a generous grant from the Louisville Metro Department of Parks & Recreation, TreesLouisville is excited to announce another round of its Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program! To participate, purchase and plant an eligible shade tree on your residential property and apply to receive $30 back on up to three trees. This program is open to residents of Jefferson County, KY on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds have been claimed. Assistance

Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under a new Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD. For more information, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

The Louisville Water Foundation works with community agencies to help customers keep their water turned on. Drops of Kindness offers residential and business customers help with resolving unpaid bills and reducing future financial obligations. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

April 16 and 30 and May 14 - Louisville Grows Seeds & Starts Sale

Louisville Grows is hosting our annual Seeds & Starts Sale in April and May. The Seeds & Starts Sale is a fundraiser for Louisville Grows' Community Garden Grant program, which supports community gardens each year in and around Louisville. The sale offers low-cost vegetables, herbs, flowers (up-potted and grown from seed by volunteers) as well as fruit trees and berry bushes. Each of our 100+ varieties of plants are chosen for adaptability, biodiversity, beauty, and taste! We have unique plants for any space, and we're giving away some seeds for free. Sale dates are April 16 and 30 and May 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1639 Portland Avenue.

April 20 - Youth Performing Arts School to present #ENOUGH - Plays to End Gun Violence

The Youth Performing Arts School @ duPont Manual High is proud to announce its participation in the Nationwide Reading of #ENOUGH: Plays to End Gun Violence on April 20 at 7 p.m.

YPAS will join more than 50 other communities around the United States to perform this year’s winning play selections and hold conversations with the audience about how gun violence affects our community. Tickets are “Pay-what-you-can'' and will be donated to the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods. Tickets are available at YPAS.ludus.com. 

#ENOUGH: Plays to End Gun Violence calls on teens to confront gun violence by creating new works of theatre that will spark critical conversations and meaningful action in communities across the country. This year, eight plays were selected by a committee of award-winning playwrights including Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph and Drama Critics Circle Award winner Lydia R. Diamond, as well as Manuel Oliver, whose son Joaquin was murdered in the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, FL. The plays, all written by high school students, address gun violence through a variety of lenses and experiences.

“We are participating in #ENOUGH because one of our largest objectives in theatre education is to allow students to connect their art with citizenship. Theatre as civic engagement goes back to the Greeks. It’s theatre that matters,” said Katie Blackerby Weible, Chair of the Theatre Department at YPAS. “Also, we’re thrilled that one of the winning plays was written by one of our own.” Cameron Thiessing, a Manual MST student, wrote the winning play Undo, Redo that is included in the eight-play performance.

This year’s Nationwide Reading is scheduled to mark the twenty-third anniversary of the mass shooting at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. The cornerstone performance will be held at Lincoln Center in New York City.

In addition to the staged reading, YPAS will host a post-show discussion that will be facilitated by Yvette DeLaGuardia. Several city officials have been invited. All are welcome to attend. Patrons are advised that the subject matter includes discussions - but not graphic depictions - of many forms of gun violence, including school shootings and officer-involved shootings.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips. Are you looking for a public place to exchange items you've sold online? Do you share custody of a child and are looking for somewhere to exchange custody? The Louisville Metro Police Department is providing MetroSWAP Zones outside of some Division offices. There is 24 hour video surveillance. LMPD recommends: Agree to meet the person ONLY at a MetroSWAP station. Meet only during daylight hours. Tell someone you trust where you are meeting and at what time. Meet in the parking lot. There will be two designated parking spots at each location for use. Make this interaction brief and to the point. RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
