November 26 - Light Up Louisville 

Light Up Louisville is returning Friday, Nov. 26, as an in-person event outside of Metro Hall at Jefferson and Sixth streets.

At 4 p.m., children and families are invited to visit the AT&T Santa’s Workshop on Sixth Street with a one-way loop to pick up holiday crafts and cookies to decorate at home, as well as to write letters to Santa and veterans through the Honor Flight program. Visitors can also get a free holiday green screen picture in the AT&T Santa’s Workshop.

The one-way loop, as well as cancellation of photos with Santa and train rides, are part of the event’s COVID-19 precautions. 

A Holiday Market will be open from 4 to 10 p.m. at Sixth and Jefferson streets, offering treats, holiday crafts and decorations for purchase. Also starting at 4 p.m., the Light Up Louisville stage on the west lawn of Metro Hall will feature live entertainment. Performances include some of Louisville’s most talented groups including DJ Jay Campbell, Louisville Classic Melodies, Motown Christmas, Steven Gould, Asly Toro, Made New Acapella, and Eight Inch Elvis.

The Lots of Lights Parade starts at 6:45 p.m. at Fourth and Liberty streets, led by Frosty the Snowman as grand marshal. From Fourth Street, the parade turns onto Jefferson and disperses at Seventh and Jefferson streets. Jesse and MJ from Mix 106.9, Louisville’s official Christmas radio station, will emcee the parade announcements. Anyone interested in participating in the parade can sign up at LightUpLouisville.org.

Around 8 p.m., Santa Claus will arrive and make his way to the entertainment stage to help “Light Up Louisville” by turning on tens of thousands of lights, including the city Christmas tree in Jefferson Square Park. A Zambelli fireworks show will follow. The city Christmas tree, a 45-foot Norway Spruce, was donated by the family of Jane and Chris Lindsay.

Road work

I-264 East & West (Watterson Expressway): Lane closures and delays possible between mile marker 0 (I-64) and 12.7 (between I-65 & Poplar Level) for concrete repair. Weeknight (Monday through Thursday) lane closures are possible from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Weekend lane closures are possible from 8 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday morning. The project’s estimated completion is winter 2021.

U.S. 31E (Bardstown Road/ Buechel Bypass): Nightly lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and delays possible on U.S. 31E (Bardstown Road) from Storage Way (mile point 5.8) to Hikes Lane / KY 2052 (mile point 10.98) for asphalt milling and paving. Lane closures are possible within project limits daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as crews complete pavement striping.  This project has an estimated completion of late fall 2021.

U.S. 31E (Buechel Bypass): Right lane closure over the Norfolk Southern Railroad (mile point 10.4) due to findings from a routine inspection earlier this year. The affected area is not visible while driving over the bridge deck. The lane will remain closed until a repair can be coordinated with the railroad. Motorists can use Bardstown Road as a detour. Yard waste and leaf drop off

Mowing over fall leaves to mulch them back into your lawn is a great option for reducing waste. Mulching not only returns vital nutrients to the soil, but experts say that it can help your grass grow even better the following year! Never blow leaves into the street!  Leaves are collected with lawn waste but must be contained in paper lawn bags or approved containers.  The Metro Public Works free leaf drop-off sites will be open Tuesday-Saturdays, through December 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop-off will not be available on November 25 and 26 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be taken back by residents. Locations are: Public Works Yard, 10500 Lower River Road (enter from Bethany Lane) Public Works East District Operations Center, 595 North Hubbards Lane Shawnee Park, 230 Southwestern Parkway (Athletic Complex) Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue, which is also open Tuesday-Friday until 5 p.m.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Due to Covid-19, guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Cat of the Week: Rosie Rosie is special in more ways than one. The shy, black-and-white cat is a now member of the exclusive tripod pet club. Rosie’s leg was broken and needed to be amputated, when she arrived at the shelter. She spent some time recovering in foster care until she was ready to find a forever family. Her adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Rosie is approximately two years old and weighs about seven pounds. Wild Winter Days at the Zoo

The Louisville Zoo’s Kroger Wild Winter Days, through Feb. 28, features discounted winter admission and a Dare to Care food drive.

The Zoo is proud to team up with Kroger and Dare to Care again to help struggling families in our community. Guests who bring at least one canned food item per person may purchase tickets at the Zoo windows for $9.50 per adult and $6.50 per child/senior ticket. Details are available at www.louisvillezoo.org/wildwinterdays.

To date, the Zoo has collected nearly 25,000 pounds of food thanks to the generosity of its guests. That is the weight of two African elephants like Mikki.

The Zoo is open daily year-round. Fall/winter hours continue through March 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (stay until 5 p.m.). The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

December 6 deadline - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet seeks feedback on long range plans

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is developing a Long-Range Statewide Transportation Plan (LRSTP) to identify the goals, policies, needs, and analysis tools that set the direction of Kentucky’s transportation system toward 2045. The LRSTP update is an important opportunity for all Kentuckians to weigh in on the state’s long-term multimodal transportation vision. LIHEAP Fall subsidy enrollment open

Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services is now accepting appointments for the annual Fall Subsidy Component of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) through December 10, or until funds are depleted. During LIHEAP Subsidy, individuals or families in Jefferson County at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines who are responsible for home energy cost, whether directly or as an undesignated portion of rent, are eligible for assistance. Residents can apply regardless of the status of their utility bills. The Subsidy component provides households a one-time benefit based on income levels and housing category. Payments are be made directly to the heating vendor (i.e. LG&E). Know of a local non-profit needing lawn care equipment? 

Submissions are now open for the inaugural Lawn Care for Cleaner Air Community Equipment Grant Program. The grant will award a package of professional-powered, electric lawn equipment to a local non-profit organization. The package of equipment is valued at $1,256 and includes an electric mower, trimmer, blower, and extra rechargeable battery that powers all three tools. The Grant is an extension of Air Pollution Control District’s Lawn Care for Cleaner Air program, which incentivizes the purchase and use of electric-powered lawn equipment in order to reduce air pollution from gas-powered engines.

TreesLouisville's Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program continues

Thanks to a generous grant from the Louisville Metro Department of Parks & Recreation, TreesLouisville is excited to announce another round of its Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program! To participate, purchase and plant an eligible shade tree on your residential property and apply to receive $30 back on up to three trees. This program is open to residents of Jefferson County, KY on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds have been claimed. Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under a new Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD. For more information, click here, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

The Louisville Water Foundation works with community agencies to help customers keep their water turned on. Drops of Kindness offers residential and business customers help with resolving unpaid bills and reducing future financial obligations. This year’s FOF, entitled Sacred Change: Essential Conversations on Faith and Race, is tracking to be as meaningful of a Festival as we have had in our 25-year history. Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips. These LMPD divisions serve sections of District 10: Link to LMPD Fourth Division  Link to LMPD Fifth Division Link to LMPD Sixth Division LMPD working in District 10 have asked us to share this reminder: please call the LMPD non-emergency number, instead of sending an email, if you're seeing suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Sending emails to LMPD delays response, and officers need to be dispatched for the activity. These citations continue the nuisance abatement process. MetroSwap areas are here for your safety when buying or selling items

Are you looking for a public place to exchange items you've sold online? Do you share custody of a child and are looking for somewhere to exchange custody? The Louisville Metro Police Department is providing MetroSWAP Zones outside of some Division offices. There is 24 hour video surveillance. LMPD recommends: Agree to meet the person ONLY at a MetroSWAP station. Meet only during daylight hours. Tell someone you trust where you are meeting and at what time. Meet in the parking lot. There will be two designated parking spots at each location for use. Make this interaction brief and to the point. RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
