HEADLINES

Covid Test

Free Covid Home Test Kits Available

Residents of some Louisville areas can now order FREE, rapid, at-home COVID-19 testing kits while supplies last. It’s part of a program called Say Yes! COVID Test offered in partnership with the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, the CDC, and the National Institutes of Health, to provide free COVID home test kits to residents living in these zip codes:  40118, 40202, 40203, 40208, 40210, 40211, 40212, 40213, 40214, 40215, 40216, 40218, 40219, 40229, 40258, 40272.

You conduct the tests yourself at home with quick swipes inside the nose, and results display privately in just 10 minutes. Residents age 2 and over, whether they are vaccinated or not, can receive a pack of 8 tests to use twice a week until they run out. Frequent testing, combined with vaccination, wearing a mask, hand washing, and physical distancing, can help to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our community. To learn more and order your free tests, visit CovidHomeTestLouisville.org.

These zip codes were chosen because these have been our zip codes with the highest number of COVID cases and lowest vaccination rates. Individuals living in these zip codes can get the test kits one of several ways:

  • Ordering them at www.covidhometestlouisville.org
  • Calling the Lou Health Helpline at 502-912-8598
  • Or picking them up via several partners that are listed on the website

We encourage you to check out the website.  It’s very comprehensive, including a video demonstrating how to use the test, frequently asked questions, and all the partner locations where kits can be picked up. (More partners are coming on board, and will be reflected on the website next week.) For people who don’t have access to online services, the staff at the Lou Health Helpline (502-912-8598) can assist them with all that information as well, including obtaining the test kits.

Brightside Community Cleanup

We encourage all residents to take part in the fall 2021 Brightside Community-Wide Cleanup on Saturday, October 23rd. The event is a great service opportunity for boy/girl scouts, sports teams, faith groups and community organizations. It could also be a corporate, or family, team bonding opportunity! Sign up today!

Cleanups are an integral part of Brightside's mission and without the help of volunteer groups, and many other volunteers throughout the year, Brightside could not achieve their goals of a cleaner, greener Louisville.

Neighborhoods can hold their own cleanups at any point throughout the year and Brightside can provide gloves and bags for each Neighborhood Cleanup. Brightside works with Solid Waste Management to have the collected litter bags picked up. Give them call at (502) 574-2613 or register online

Thanks to each and every volunteer who supports the Brightside Community-Wide Cleanup, for your time and dedication – we can’t do it without you!

Get Your Flu Shot

Getting your flu shot any year is a good idea, but this year especially. As we have seen our healthcare facilities and frontline workers stretched to (and beyond) capacity, small things like getting a flu shot can prevent you from becoming severely ill down the road. A flu shot could help relieve some of the burden on our healthcare system, and keep you healthy!

FURTHER UPDATES

Regional Driver Licensing Office in West Louisville

The fourth Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Driver Licensing Regional Office in Jefferson County, and the first in West Louisville, has opened to ensure modern licensing and credentialing services are accessible to all residents of Kentucky’s largest metro area.

The new office, at the Nia Center, 2900 W. Broadway, in Louisville, formerly was a branch location of the Jefferson County Office of Circuit Court Clerk. The Transportation Cabinet is taking over the office as part of a phased transfer of all Kentucky driver licensing services. Operating hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern. Customers can walk in or schedule an appointment online at drive.ky.gov.

First-time REAL ID applicants must visit a KYTC regional office in person, with proof of identity, residence and social security. For a personalized list of required documents to bring when applying, visit http://www.realidky.com. All driver testing must be successfully performed with the Kentucky State Police before requesting a credential. Testing appointments can be made online at http://kentuckystatepolice.org/driver-testing/.

Antler Alert

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is issuing an "Antler Alert" to remind motorists that it’s peak season for highway collisions involving deer and other wildlife on the move.

On average, U.S. drivers have a 1 in 116 chance of a collision with an animal. Kentucky ranks above the national average and 18th among the states at 1 chance in 88. (View the report here.)

As the report notes, highway crash rates involving wildlife increase sharply in October, November and December with mating seasons, hunting seasons and fall harvests.

KYTC offers these driving tips to help improve safety:

  • Slow down immediately upon spotting a deer crossing the roadway; they tend to travel in groups.
  • Don’t swerve to avoid a deer, which can result in a more serious crash with an oncoming vehicle or roadside object.
  • In the event of a crash, keep both hands on the wheel and apply brakes steadily until stopped.
  • Always wear a seat belt.
  • Keep headlights on bright unless other vehicles are approaching.
  • Eliminate distractions while driving: Phones down!
  • Drive defensively, constantly scanning the roadside, especially at dawn and dusk when deer are most active.

Motorists are asked to report all deer-vehicle collisions to police. KYTC traffic engineers use the crash data to aid in placing deer-crossing warning signs and other safety measures.
