Louder than Life to return - Phillips Lane closing September 13 

The Louder than Life festival is returning to the Highland Festival Grounds at the Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC), September 23-26. 

Phillips Lane will close September 13 through October 1 for the festival. 

The Louder than Life Community Hotline, 502-586-0120, is now available for neighbors who have questions or want to provide feedback.

During non-event days, the caller may leave name, address, contact number and a reason for calling on the voice mail. Someone will return the call within 24 hours if requested or will document feedback/suggestions. The hotline will be answered by a live attendant on event days only.

COVID-19 case numbers remain in red alert status

On Tuesday, Mayor Fischer and Dr. Sarah Moyer, the city’s Chief Health Strategist, reported that Louisville remains deeply in the red alert status for COVID-19 and urged unvaccinated people to take precautions, get tested, and speak with their doctor or pharmacist about getting a safe, highly effective vaccine.

For residents who don’t have access to technology or have difficulty using an online process, the staff at Louisville Metro’s COVID-19 Helpline, 912-8598, can assist with scheduling an appointment.

Greater Louisville, Inc. (GLI) has created an innovative partnership with employers, workforce partners, and training institutions to help place people into a career path that will provide a livable wage and mobility. If you are interested in a job and growing your career, this program is for you.

GLI has brought together entry-level and secondary employers (from $11/hour to $31+/hour) to create pathways for you to access jobs while also pursuing upskilling or reskilling to get you ready for the next phase. Intentional connections have been made between 15 employers in five different career tracts: business services, health care, hospitality, manufacturing, and technology

Participants in the CAN who enter the network are connected with training programs and support services to overcome workforce barriers and help move from low wage, low skilled positions to higher wage, higher skilled positions.

Watterson Expressway work update

Lane closures on the Watterson will be possible between mile marker 0 (I-64) and mile marker 11 (Airport/Fairgrounds) for concrete repair. On weeknights (Tuesday through Thursday), lane closures are possible between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

Did you know that there is a monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish In partnership with Dare to Care? They currently distribute food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Due to Covid-19, guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Cat of the Week: Pretty Pete Pretty Pete has graduated from foster care and is ready for a forever home. The handsome gray cat, who is around nine months old, is very friendly and loves to be held. Pretty Pete’s adoption fees is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. He weighs about eight pounds. Pretty Pete does have a medical addendum for a pelvic injury but it doesn’t prevent the curious kitty from getting around. Herschel’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. He’s already neuter, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. Herschel knows several commands. September 10 and 11 - Oktoberfest celebration at the German-American Club

Each day will feature live music from River City Polkatz and Prost!, dancing, and plenty of German food.  Hours are 2 p.m. to midnight, admission is $5 per adult. Admission for kids is free, and there is a playground. Lawn chairs are welcome in the outdoor Bier Garten area.

Dino Quest continues through September 19  Dino Quest presented by Great Clips runs through Sept. 19 and invites guests to travel back 65 to 210 million years in time to visit 21 life-sized robotic dinosaurs. This exhibit is the world’s largest, most lifelike robotic dinosaur exhibit. Louisville Zoo hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (enjoy until 6 p.m.) through September 19. This year, the Louisville Zoo celebrates 40 years of merry – not scary – fun at its annual Halloween event, Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer. Registration for the Zoo’s annual Throo the Zoo 5K is open. The wildest 5K in town presented by Norton Audubon Hospital is set to occur at 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 13 at the Louisville Zoo. Race proceeds benefit the Louisville Zoo.

One of Louisville’s most distinctive road events, the course takes participants “throo” the Zoo — past some of their favorite animals and exhibits. The start and finish lines are just outside the Zoo gate, but along the way, participants will be able to see animal ambassadors like bears, giraffes and sloths. The chip-timed course is open to runners and walkers at all fitness levels, including guests with strollers.

Applications now open for Down Payment Assistance, Home Repair programs

City allocated additional $2 million for down payment assistance in FY 22 budget

Louisville Metro’s Office of Housing is now accepting applications for its Down Payment Assistance and Home Repair programs, all aim to help low- to moderate-income individuals access and retain homeownership and build generational wealth.

Households must be at or below 80 percent area median income (AMI) to be eligible for the Down Payment Assistance and Home Repair programs. That is $61,500 or less a year for a family of four.

Applications for both may be submitted at https://portal.neighborlysoftware.com/louisvilleky/participant, and paper copies are available at the Metro Development Center, 444 S. 5th Street. Those with questions about the application process and the programs can call the Office of Housing at 574-5850.

TreesLouisville's Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program continues

Thanks to a generous grant from the Louisville Metro Department of Parks & Recreation, TreesLouisville is excited to announce another round of its Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program! Since nearly 70 percent of available planting space in Jefferson County is privately owned, planting a tree at home is one of the best and easiest ways you can help expand our community tree canopy and grow a greener, healthier neighborhood. To participate, purchase and plant an eligible shade tree on your residential property and apply to receive $30 back on up to three trees. This program is open to residents of Jefferson County, KY on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds have been claimed. Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under a new Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD. For more information, click here, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

The Louisville Water Foundation works with community agencies to help customers keep their water turned on. Drops of Kindness offers residential and business customers help with resolving unpaid bills and reducing future financial obligations. If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. Louisville Free Public Library to host exhibit, panel discussion marking 20^th anniversary of September 11 attacks

Exhibit opens September 9 at the Main Library, 301 York Street

Following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, New Yorkers did something rather unexpected, they took photographs – lots of them. What began as a single photo hung in the window of a SoHo storefront became perhaps the most important crowdsourcing photo exhibition of our time. The resulting collection, here is new york: the september 11 photographs, returns to the Main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library to mark the 20th anniversary of the tragedy.

The exhibition features 500 photographs taken the day of and in the aftermath of the September 11 attack, by professional photographers and amateurs alike. The images are presented without titles or commentary. The result is both a vivid reminder of the horror of that day, and a celebration of the human spirit and strong determination of New Yorkers and Americans in general.

An opening reception and panel discussion, United We Stood: Memories of 9/11, will be held at the Main Library on September 9 at 6:30 p.m.  Moderator Melissa Swan and panelists Elizabeth Kramer (former employee in the Peace Corps’ New York office at the World Trade Center), Pete Longton (photojournalist who covered Ground Zero for WHAS-11), and Charles Traub (photographer/educator, co-founder of here is new york) will recall their first-hand experiences during and following the attacks.

The Louisville Public Library's collection of the here is new york photographs was a gift of Charles Traub and his family to the Library. Charles Traub was one of the original founding organizers of the exhibition in New York, and managed it with colleagues through the course of its exhibitions from 2001 to 2003. Mary Cadden Traub and Aaron Traub were part of a core group who maintained the organization's activities throughout those same years. The Traubs are natives of Louisville.

The Sista Strut 3K Breast Cancer walk is returning to Louisville October 16 at Slugger Field beginning at 10 a.m.  Sista Strut's mission is to increase awareness about breast cancer and provide information on community resources in the area. A portion of the proceeds from the Sista Strut 3K presented by Baptist Health Cancer Care will benefit Kentucky African Americans Against Cancer. Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. A new interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips. Are you looking for a public place to exchange items you've sold online? Do you share custody of a child and are looking for somewhere to exchange custody? The Louisville Metro Police Department is providing MetroSWAP Zones outside of some Division offices. There is 24 hour video surveillance. LMPD recommends: Agree to meet the person ONLY at a MetroSWAP station. Meet only during daylight hours. Tell someone you trust where you are meeting and at what time. Meet in the parking lot. There will be two designated parking spots at each location for use. Make this interaction brief and to the point. RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
