Councilwoman Dorsey issues a statement following the shooting death of Deputy Brandon Shirley early Thursday morning.
Louisville – Councilwoman Keisha Dorsey (D-3) has issued the following statement on learning of the death of Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Shirley after a shooting early Thursday morning:
"There is an overwhelming sadness in our hearts today as we collectively grieve the tragic and painful loss of one of our sons. Deputy Brandon Shirley deserved better. We must do better to ensure all of our children and neighbors have the opportunity to live in healthy and safe environments. My staff and I will continue to work toward this effort in any and all ways. But today, my immediate thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Shirley's family."
Urban Reforestation Grant Applications
The Louisville MSD Urban Reforestation Grants Program is now accepting applications for tree planting projects. Grants will pay for trees planted within the MSD Drainage Service area, which includes all of Jefferson County except for the cities of Shively, Jeffersontown, St. Matthews and Anchorage. Download the application at https://louisvillemsd.org/trees. The application deadline is Wednesday September 15th at 5pm ET.
Please contact Jennifer Kern at Jennifer.Kern@LouisvilleMSD.org or (502)540‐6241 with any questions.
The MSD Urban Reforestation Program plants 1,000 trees annually by working with local residents, businesses, municipal organizations and neighborhood associations. These trees redirect an average of 1.35 million gallons of stormwater away from the sewer system every year, which decreases sewer overflows into our waterways. By planting more trees, MSD not only absorbs stormwater but also reduces erosion and flooding, provides shade, reduces noise pollution and carbon dioxide in the air, and provides a habitat for nearby wildlife.

LIHEAP summer cooling assistance enrollment open
Automated appointment line now open to schedule appointments in advance
LOUISVILLE, Ky (July 12, 2021) - Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS) joins with Community Action Agencies across the state today to begin accepting applications for the 2021 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Summer Cooling Program. This federally-funded programs is designed to help offset the cost of higher electric bills due to rising temperatures. Applications will be accepted now through October 31, 2021, or until funds are depleted.
The LIHEAP Summer Cooling Program is separated into two components, Subsidy and Crisis, to assist with electric cost. Eligible households can apply for one or both components and participation in prior LIHEAP programs will not affect a household’s eligibility. Households must meet eligibility requirements, with a household income at or below 150% of the Kentucky median income.
The Subsidy component provides households a one-time benefit ranging from $100 to $400 depending on income levels and housing category. The Crisis component is available to eligible households who demonstrate a home energy crisis situation. Crisis benefits will cover the minimum needed to alleviate the crisis not to exceed $600. Households can reapply each time they experience a crisis situation until they reached their maximum benefit.
“Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS) is proud to serve as part of the Community Action Kentucky network, and we’re so grateful this assistance is available to help our residents, said Tameka Laird, director of Louisville Metro RCS. “We want Louisvillians and all of our state’s residents to remain healthy, especially when dangerously high temperatures can make homes unsafe.”
How to apply?
Schedule a drop off appointment in advance at one of the seven LIHEAP Drop Boxes. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling 502-991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. The toll-free service is currently open and is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
Applicants will be assessed for both the Subsidy and Crisis programs and may receive benefits from both programs if eligible.
LIHEAP required documentation, along with the downloadable LIHEAP Family Profile form and the LIHEAP Application should be dropped off at the LIHEAP site you select, on the day of your appointment (download forms at louisvilleky.gov/LIHEAP or pick up at Drop Boxes).
Applicants will then be contacted by LIHEAP staff within 72 hours (3 business days) of the appointment time.
Required documentation to drop off includes:
- Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
- Proof of all household’s (all members) income from the preceding month. All individuals 18 or over in the household with no income -- and no way to document that status such as a Food Stamp Award letter -- must have a Proof of No Income Form completed prior to applying for benefits. These forms are available at the LIHEAP Drop Box locations or online at louisvilleky.gov/LIHEAP.

Recycling Cart Updates
|
Yes, we are still working on the second round of recycling cart deliveries! If you’re still waiting for your new recycling cart, here is the latest update:
- As of August 4, we are still working on delivering to houses with recycling collected on Tuesdays.
- We are working on solutions that will help this process move faster and we appreciate your patience!
- We will continue to collect recycling from the small bins until January 1, 2022.
- The new grant-funded carts are intended for households that did not already have a rolling recycling cart with wheels. If you already had a recycling cart and are experiencing overflow, consider purchasing an additional recycling cart or using a store-bought container that is 30-40 gallons, has handles, a lid, and is labeled RECYCLING. Only recycle what is accepted, crush containers, flatten cardboard, and recycle items loosely (not in bags).
The new every other week recycling schedule is in effect. Keep up with the schedule by downloading the Recycle Coach app. Learn more about this recycling cart project at Louisvilleky.gov/RecycleMore. Set reminders and allow notifications to hear from us if there are issues or delays in waste collections.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website
The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical.
Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips.
Please call the LMPD non-emergency number, instead of sending an email, if you're seeing suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Sending emails to LMPD delays response, and officers need to be dispatched for the activity. These citations continue the nuisance abatement process. The LMPD non-emergency line is 574-7111 or 574-2111
