Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! This week marked the return from ‘summer break’ for the Metro Council as we have resumed regular committee meetings.

As I mentioned previously, one of our first major initiatives upon returning focuses on how to use the American Rescue Plan money. We have held two public hearings already and have an online comment form as well. We have received literally hundreds of suggestions for how to use those funds. If you want to speak at one of these open forums, we have one remaining. It will be held at 6 p.m. this coming Monday at West Broadway Church of Christ, 3921 West Broadway. We will take all of this input and work to find the best use for the funding (within limits set forth by the Treasury Department). I look forward to sharing more as the process unfolds.

I also want to touch on the concerning rise in COVID rates. I have more information on the topic below, so I won’t harp on it here. I will say I believe the only thing standing between us and beating the virus is whether those of us who can get vaccinated choose to do so. Please help by doing your part.

As always, if you have a concern or suggestion, don't hesitate to contact my office.

Coffee With Your Councilman

coffee

My next "Coffee With Your Councilman" will be Tuesday, August 10 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Northeast Regional Library, 15 Bellevoir Circle. Andre Guess, President and CEO of the Fund for the Arts, will be our featured speaker. After Mr. Guess has finished sharing, I will take some time to discuss the latest news from the Metro Council (including American Rescue Plan funding and our redistricting process which formally begins next week) and answer any questions you may have.

If you are interested in joining us, please let my office know by emailing kip.eatherly@louisvilleky.gov or calling 574-1117. I hope to see you August 10!

COVID Update

As some of you may know, COVID-19 cases have doubled in the last week with the Delta variant now the dominant strain in Louisville. An increase in infections due to the Delta variant typically occurs where vaccination rates are low. District 17 residents have done better than average in terms of completing a vaccine series as the percentage is between 52-60% for those living in the 40223, 40241, 40242, and 40245 zip codes (vaccination rate maps by zip codes and more COVID data can be found here).

Still, we have work to do in order to limit the impact of COVID-19 in Louisville. If you haven't completed your vaccine series, I hope you will consider doing so. Click here for vaccine information, including a list of locations near you. A free vaccination event that may not show up on that link will be held Saturday, July 31 from 12-4 p.m. at Green Castle Baptist Church, 4970 Murphy Lane. Early registration is strongly encouraged, though there will be limited opportunities for walk-up vaccinations. There will be free food, games, bouncy houses, and giveaways as well that afternoon. For more information, please call the church at 243-4040.

Pop-Up Drop-Off Event - Tomorrow

pop up

Pop-Up Drop-Offs are free recycling and large item disposal events for residents of Jefferson County, sponsored by the Department of Public Works & Assets and the Metro Council. These events have occurred monthly since March and will continue until November. Click here for more information, including what is accepted at these drop-offs and the schedule for the remainder of 2021.

PDS Weekly Activity Report

The Metro Planning and Design Services (PDS) Weekly Activity Report is a great way to stay current on land use proposals in Jefferson County. This report covers requests for changes in zoning, conditional use permits, variances, street closures, and more. This week, there is one project in District 17 - a revised landscape plan due to revisions to the entrance drive for property located at 13501 Factory Lane. Click here for the full report and contact information for the District 17 case should you have any questions.

National Night Out - August 3

NNO

The 2021 National Night Out will be held Tuesday, August 3 from 5-8 p.m. at Warren Walker Park in Douglass Hills. If you haven't attended a National Night Out before, it's a great opportunity to talk to your public safety representatives, learn more about what they do, and meet some of your fellow residents as well. For more information, please call the 8th Division at 574-2258.
