The Little Sisters of the Poor created a shady space for residents to watch the ceremony, including resident veterans Ralph Hughes and Chuck Conder. The Little Sisters provide quality care to nearly 80 residents, all of whom are over 65 years of age and without the financial means, family or social support to maintain independence in the community. Through June 21 - Juneteenth Jubilee Celebration

In commemoration of the freeing of the last enslaved people in the U.S., Louisville Metro has a new holiday, Juneteenth Freedom Day, on June 19.  The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. Louisville will observe the holiday June 17-21 with a citywide Juneteenth Jubilee Celebration. Learn more and see a schedule of events here.

Many metro offices will be closed Friday, June 18. There will be no collection of recycling/yard waste within the Louisville Metro Urban Service District on Saturday, June 19. Please place your recycling and yard waste out for collection on Friday, June 18. As a reminder, carts must be set out by 6 a.m.

City’s Office of Resilience and Community Services and Neighborhood Place are open for face-to-face services  

Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services and Neighborhood Place locations are now open to the public for face-to-face appointments.

The offices were temporarily closed for walk-in clients more than a year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but remained open for staff to fill essential functions, with some staff working remotely.  Following the new COVID-19 guidelines from the CDC and in alignment with Governor Beshear’s rescinded mandates, the facilities are now open for in-person client meetings.

In order to continue to meet the need of high-volume programs, including Eviction Prevention assistance and LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), appointments will be required in advance for some services.  See guidelines below.

Neighborhood Place All seven Neighborhood Place locations are open to serve residents Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by appointment only. To find a Neighborhood Place in their area, residents may call Metro311 at 311 or 574-5000, or visit https://louisvilleky.gov/government/neighborhood-place.

Neighborhood Place partner agencies will continue to offer a mix of drop-off and remote services in addition to in-person services, by appointment.  See below:

Neighborhood Place clients may be asked to wait in their vehicles to ensure adequate spacing in the waiting rooms. Guest/clients visiting Neighborhood Place are encouraged to follow the mask guidelines from the CDC and Governor Beshear in accordance with their health and vaccination status.  While Kentucky’s statewide mask mandate has been lifted, employees may still choose to wear face coverings as this is a personal preference. 

LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) The LIHEAP Spring Subsidy Component runs through June 30, or until available funds have been expended, whichever comes first.

To apply, residents must schedule a drop-off appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling 502-991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com.

Senior Nutrition/Meals on Wheels The city’s Meals on Wheels continues to operate delivering to more than 1240 homebound senior clients once per week with a five-frozen meal pack until daily, meal delivery can resume.  

Louisville’s senior congregate meal sites, which provide a nutritious lunch, socialization and activities for residents age 60 and over will begin reopening in stages by the end of the month. 

“We all look forward to being able to get back together, and we are excited to provide these nutritious meals on site to our seniors,” said Marvita Starks, program manager for the city’s Senior Nutrition Program.  “But even more important than the meals, is the social connection and wellbeing this service helps to foster among older residents.”

Limited funds remain for LG&E COVID-19 relief assistance

Some funding remains for Metro Louisville’s COVID relief emergency assistance program for LG&E customers, and as of Monday, the Association of Community Ministries was processing applications at their online application portal. They will do so as long as funds allow.

Jefferson County households could be eligible for as much as $1,000 in aid if they have a past due amount on their LG&E bill as the result of an economic hardship related to COVID-19, and those past due arrearages occurred between March 16, 2020 and March 31, 2021.

To make completing the online application and signature capture process easier ACM has created a short video demonstration. They recommend viewing this before applying.

JCPS continues offering meals to youth over the summer - anyone 18 and younger can pick up free meals at sites throughout the city

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) continues to offer free, nutritious meals throughout the summer to anyone 18 years old and younger. In addition, the district will offer food at every summer learning and enrichment site this year to support students in in nearly 80 camps and programs. Children do not need to be JCPS students to receive the meals. Families can pick up ‘bulk meals’ – multiple breakfasts, lunches and snacks to last for several days – at more than 40 school curbside locations from 10 a.m. to 1 pm. on Thursdays throughout the summer. They can also get bulk meals at more than 20 mobile sites on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and grab a lunch daily at 11 parks and pools throughout the city. Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

Did you know that there is a monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish In partnership with Dare to Care? They currently distribute food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Due to Covid-19, guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Dog of the Week: Tetris Let the games begin! Tetris is ready to spend the dog days of summer with a forever family! The approximately one-year-old Labrador Retriever mix is a bit shy but quickly warms up to new people and she is super sweet. June 20 - Free admission for Dads on Father's Day at the Zoo

The Louisville Zoo is celebrating Father’s Day with free admission to the Zoo for dads on Ford's Father’s Day, June 20. Families can bring dad out to see the Zoo’s newest dad  — gray seal Boone, father of seal pup Finsbay. This special Father’s Day celebration comes on the heels of the new COVID-19 guidelines from the CDC and in alignment with Governor Beshear’s expiring mandates for capacity.  Kids can bring dad to the Zoo’s admission windows to receive his free ticket.  No advanced reservation is required. “Thanks to Ford Motor Company, we are delighted to be able to host dads free on their big day,” said Zoo director, John Walczak. Louisville Zoo hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (enjoy until 6 p.m.) through September 19.

Free Louisville Water meter replacements are coming to some D10 customers

District 10 meters to be replaced are shown in blue. Click here to see a larger file. Some D10 Louisville Water customers will get upgraded water meters at no cost to them. Meter upgrades will take place Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. They will knock on your door before work begins. Water will be turned off for a short period, usually less than 30 minutes. They will also leave a note on your door when they finish. A Louisville Water contractor, Grid One Solutions, will do most of the meter upgrades. Their vehicles will have an orange and black Grid One logo and Louisville Water contractor signs. All workers will have Grid One identification badges.  Grid One Solutions will install 280,000 meters and metering equipment over a three-year period. Beginning July 2020, they will install up to 800 units each week through 2023. Recycling: 18-gallon bins vs 95-gallon carts

The new 95-gallon recycling carts have more than five times the capacity than the original 18-gallon recycling bins, but that’s not the only reason for the upgrade.  They save backs! The 18-gallon bins are only 14 inches off the ground, which means the repeated motion of bending and lifting takes a toll on the collection crew. The wheels make the cart easy to move for residents and workers alike, and the lift bar allows the truck to do the heavy lifting.   Their lids prevent litter! It’s no secret that recyclables can easily blow out of the open-top 18-gallon bins. Providing carts with lids and requiring store-bought containers to also have lids falls in line with the city’s cleanliness initiatives. They allow for every other week recycling! Every other week recycling is a more efficient system and means less wear and tear on the roads and on the trucks themselves. The new carts are made with 12 percent post-consumer recycled materials and another 25-38 percent came from old carts or plastic manufacturing scraps. Although residents are welcome to keep their old bin for household use, they can also be dropped off for reuse or recycling. Bins that are usable will be made available for organizations or schools to use for office or classroom recycling. Bins that are broken will be recycled. Sign up now for New Roots shares of fresh produce

New Roots is a local nonprofit organization connecting families to affordable, fresh food through their biweekly Fresh Stop Markets.

June through October, interested families can come to their neighborhood Fresh Stop Market (or nearby) and pick up a big bag of nine varieties of seasonal produce every other week. All families must pre-order and pay one week ahead of each biweekly market, using automatic recurring payments of SNAP or Debit/Credit. 

Bags (we call them shares) are $6 for families paying with SNAP Benefits/P-EBT cards and $12 for those with limited resources paying with credit/debit cards. Everyone gets the same bag of nine varieties of fresh, seasonal, organic and chemical-free produce, no matter what they pay, for $40 worth of fresh goodies. There are opportunities for the entire family to volunteer as well.

Signups have started and there is a limited amount of produce so don’t hesitate to get involved. Everyone must sign up in advance. You can download the app on your smartphone (put New Roots Fresh Stop Market in the search bar of the App Store or Google Play Store on your mobile smart phone). Free federal and state income tax preparation is now available for eligible residents. The Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, and AARP Tax Aide programs provide trained, IRS-certified volunteers to offer free tax services via online or at select drop-off sites. The service is available to individuals and families who earned less than $66,000 in 2020. Learn more.

TreesLouisville's Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program continues

Thanks to a generous grant from the Louisville Metro Department of Parks & Recreation, TreesLouisville is excited to announce another round of its Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program! Since nearly 70 percent of available planting space in Jefferson County is privately owned, planting a tree at home is one of the best and easiest ways you can help expand our community tree canopy and grow a greener, healthier neighborhood. To participate, purchase and plant an eligible shade tree on your residential property and apply to receive $30 back on up to three trees. This program is open to residents of Jefferson County, KY on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds have been claimed. Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under a new Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD. For more information, click here, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

The Louisville Water Foundation works with community agencies to help customers keep their water turned on. Drops of Kindness offers residential and business customers help with resolving unpaid bills and reducing future financial obligations. If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. The Metropolitan Housing Coalition will be offering a bi-monthly forum focusing on vacant and abandoned properties in Louisville. This is a free, bi-monthly forum focused on finding solutions in Louisville presented by the Louisville Vacant Properties Campaign.

 Locate legal Short Term Rentals with new interactive map

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. A new interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips. MetroSwap areas are here for your safety when buying or selling items

Are you looking for a public place to exchange items you've sold online? Do you share custody of a child and are looking for somewhere to exchange custody? The Louisville Metro Police Department is providing MetroSWAP Zones outside of some Division offices. There is 24 hour video surveillance. LMPD recommends: Agree to meet the person ONLY at a MetroSWAP station. Meet only during daylight hours. Tell someone you trust where you are meeting and at what time. Meet in the parking lot. There will be two designated parking spots at each location for use. Make this interaction brief and to the point. RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
