Recycling collection in the Urban Services District (USD) begins a bi-weekly schedule the week of July 12.
Households within the USD that currently recycle using an 18-gallon bin or their own container will receive a free 95-gallon recycling cart, after Louisville applied for and received grant support for advancing recycling in the community. A waste container audit was performed throughout the USD over a three-week period. Any household that participated in recycling during the audit but did not have a recycling cart will receive one. Cart delivery begins June 1. (The new carts have blue lids, as a first step to move Louisville to the blue color associated with recycling in most of the country.)

Five important things to know about the cart delivery process:
- The carts are being delivered by a contracted company. The employees do not work for Metro and they are not able to answer your questions. Please refer to the website or call Metro311 if you have questions.
- Any household that participated in recycling during the waste container audit and did NOT already have a 65 or 95-gallon recycling cart should be on the delivery list. If you see that carts have been delivered on your street, you are a recycler, and you do not already have a 65 or 95-gallon recycling cart, and you did not receive one, please fill out the online form to let Public Works know.
- A packet of information will be attached to every cart. Please read the Frequently Asked Questions sheet and keep the info card as a reminder of what is accepted in recycling and the every other week recycling collection schedule that begins July 12. Residents who already have a recycling cart will receive the same info card in the mail the week of June 28.
- The delivery team will not be picking up 18-gallon recycling bins. Residents are encouraged to drop them off at the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue or one of the 3 staffed recycling drop-off locations to be reused or recycled. Residents may also keep their bin.
- The cart delivery process will take several weeks. Be on the lookout for the delivery team in your area!

Yard waste collection remains on a weekly schedule. Effective immediately, except on June 18 and 19 (see below), yard waste collection for everyone who normally gets Friday service will occur on Saturdays. This is a temporary change due to constraints on current staff. We’ll let you know in the eNews or on social media if and when that changes.

In commemoration of the freeing of the last enslaved people in the U.S., Louisville Metro has a new holiday, Juneteenth Freedom Day on June 19. There will be no collection of recycling/yard waste within the Louisville Metro Urban Service District on Saturday, June 19. Please place your recycling and yard waste out for collection on Friday, June 18. As a reminder, carts must be set out by 6:00 a.m.

It’s time to clean house and get ready for another large item collection if you live in the 9th District Louisville Metro Urban Services District (USD). You may begin setting out your junk on Friday, June 11, in the afternoon. All junk must be set out by Monday, June 14 at 6:00 a.m. Some items (hazardous materials, construction debris, etc.) are not collected and these guidelines are being strictly followed. To sign up for large item set out reminders by email and text, or to find out if you are in the collection area, click here and enter your address. After selecting your address from the list of suggested addresses, you can view collection dates by month, or sign up for reminders.

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) will continue offering free, nutritious meals throughout the summer to anyone 18 years old and younger. In addition, the district will offer food at every summer learning and enrichment site this year to support students in those programs.
Families can pick up ‘bulk meals’ – multiple breakfasts, lunches and snacks to last for several days – at more than 40 school curbside locations, including St. Matthews Elementary at 601 Browns Lane, from 10 a.m. to 1 pm. on Thursdays throughout the summer. They can also get bulk meals at more than 20 mobile sites on Tuesdays and Thursdays and grab a lunch daily at 11 parks and pools throughout the city, including the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center at 201 Reservoir Avenue.
In announcing the offerings, JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio noted that, “In some cases, the meals our Nutrition Services staff provide are the only full meals the children receive each week.”

Limited funds remain in Louisville Metro’s Covid relief emergency assistance program for LG&E customers. As a result, the Association of Community Ministries (ACM) is temporarily reopening their online application portal and will process applications as long as funds allow.
Jefferson County households could be eligible for as much as $1,000 in aid if they have: 1) a past due amount on their LG&E bill as the result of an economic hardship related to Covid-19 and 2) those past due arrearages occurred between March 16, 2020 and March 31, 2021

Ballet Bound is a program that provides young dancers from all across Greater Louisville the opportunity to study classical ballet FREE of charge in Louisville Ballet's Downtown Studios.
Designed to build diversity in the world of ballet, Ballet Bound serves as a pathway for dancers to The Louisville Ballet School, Louisville Ballet Studio Company, and eventually a career with Louisville Ballet.
This summer, in partnership with Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Louisville Metro Council Members and the Citizens of Louisville’s Districts 1, 4, 5, 9,15 and 21, Louisville Ballet will host six outdoor audition workshops to identify 20 dancers for the 2021-22 Ballet Bound Class.
Auditions are open to all children ages 7-9.

Pop-Up Drop-Offs are free recycling and large item disposal events for residents of Jefferson County. Through a partnership between the Department of Public Works, the Waste Management District, and Metro Council, these events are held monthly, March through November, at various locations.
The June event is scheduled for Saturday, June 26, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Sun Valley Ball Field, 10401 Lower River Road.
Residents can have documents shredded, recycle electronics, tires, and scrap metal, dispose of prescription medication and bulky items, and compost yard debris. Items must be separated into those various categories for easy off-loading at each area. Limitations and guidelines are found at Louisvilleky.gov/PopUps.
The goal is to give all Jefferson County residents opportunities to dispose of unwanted items properly and to keep as much material out of the landfill as possible.
Future events will be announced and are posted on the Recycle Coach app calendar.
You can also recycle up to three electronic devices, up to four tires, and dispose of up to three large household items for free, year-round at the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue.

Celebrate the start of summer with Whitehall House & Garden’s exciting new live music series on Sunday, June 27 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. This month’s concert features "The Decades”, performing on the Whitehall terrace, 3110 Lexington Road. United Crescent Hill Ministries (UCHM) is now preparing for the 2021 School Supply Giveaway. This year, UCHM is asking for monetary and new backpack donations in lieu of school supply donations from member churches. It’s the most efficient and safest way to provide donations to families this year.
On average, it costs $20 per child to purchase all the necessary school supplies that are required by Jefferson County Public Schools. UCHM is asking community members to sponsor a child/children with a $20 donation per child and a donation of a new backpack. All financial or backpack donations are appreciated. The Emergency Assistance Committee Members will purchase the needed school supplies based on these donations received and distribute them to families.
To make a donation to the school supply drive, please send checks to 150 South State Street, Louisville, KY 40206 with the memo line “school supplies”. Individuals can drop off backpack donations to 150 South State Street. The deadline for donations is Thursday, July 15th.
