I hold a special place in my heart for Memorial Day and all days that are reserved to honor our troops and all those who died serving the United States of America.
Memorial Day, for me, is sacred. It is also a day for reflection and a time for us to rejoice in knowing that we live in a country based on the premise that all men are created equal and that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
The first man in my life, the one who was and will always be my hero -- my father, served honorably in World War II. It's a lovely feeling to think of my father and reflect on the times he put me to bed, took me to wrestling matches (that was a thing back in the day in Oklahoma), attended my high school football games to cheer me on as I danced with the band in the dance ensemble, and the times he walked the aisles of my church as an usher. But, knowing what he did for our country and how he sacrificed his life and returned from the Army with a debilitating injury - a broken back, makes me proud and it warms my heart. He was the love of my life, and everyone in my hometown knew that I was a daddy's girl.
On the last Monday in this month - May 31st, let us remember and honor the sacrifices made by veterans who gave up their lives in order to preserve the glory, honor and freedom of our nation. They should always live in our memories and they shall forever be entitled to our gratitude. Happy Memorial Day!
