On this Memorial Day, remember the fallen, honor their service and sacrifice, and rejoice in your freedom.  This is a federal holiday since 1971.  Enjoy!

Message From McCraney

On this Memorial Day weekend, I dedicate my message to one of my cousins who recently passed away and is gone too soon.  Due to COVD-19, I chose to view the services virtually instead of flying home to Tulsa, Oklahoma.  But had I attended the services in person, I would have publicly shared my remembrance of her in a way that I had never done before. Here is what I would have said about my cousin, my friend:

Lajuania was six years younger than I am, and when we were children running around in my grandparents’ yard, Lajuania would always stick closely by me and try to do everything I did. As a little girl, I did not like that. I labeled her a copycat.

If I bought a fudgesicle from the ice cream truck, she wanted a fudgesicle. If all the other cousins were playing tag, but I was playing hopscotch, she would prefer to play hopscotch with me.  When I was in high school and joined the dance ensemble team, Lajuania told me that she, too, wanted to be on the dance ensemble when she got to high school. I just could not understand why she wanted to do the things I did.

On many occasions I would tell people that I had a cousin who got on my nerves because she tried to copy me. As I look back on those times when I thought Lajuania was a copycat, I realize how blessed I was to have her in my life. I may not have appreciated her when I was a child, but I must admit that because of Lajuania, I am the woman I am today. It was because of her desire to emulate me that I would always make sure to put my best foot forward.

I often thought about her and the things she would do or say that caused me to believe she was nothing short of a copycat. I remember pushing myself to do the best I could because of her annoying behavior towards me. To be honest, I do not know exactly why I did that. Was it to set a good example for her to follow, or was it because I wanted to excel to a point that I thought she could not? Oh, I cringe at the thought of the latter.

Now that I am older and wiser, I know that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Lajuania was placed in my life on purpose as my muse, a source of inspiration. Whether she realized it or not, I grew to appreciate her kind words and now wish I would have had the conversation with her about how I felt she pushed me to be the best version of myself. I am grateful for Lajuania. Her family can rest assured that she fulfilled her assignment while here on earth. I have no doubt she lived her life to the fullest and accomplished all the assignments God commanded of her.

As a result of Lajuania’s obedience, I have learned the best life lessons: 1. Character is who you are when no one is looking (and someone is always looking!); 2. If you emulate someone, you imitate them because you admire them a great deal; and 3. If you are going to be a copycat, make sure you copy the right cat.

Lajuania will live on in my heart forever. With every new venture and every new accomplishment, I will think of her and smile. The cousin I once knew as a copycat is shining down brightly upon me and smiling back. Rest in peace and love, my dear cousin.

Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Evolve 502 Scholarships Available

evolve 502

JCPS seniors can go to college for free through a new scholarship offered by Evolve502.

The scholarship, which launched Oct. 1, allows eligible students in the Class of 2021 to begin postsecondary studies tuition-free at any Kentucky Community and Technical College school, including Jefferson Community and Technical College, or Simmons College of Kentucky to pursue an associate degree or career credential, to take 60 hours of credit. The Evolve502 scholarship is a last dollar scholarship, meaning Evolve502 will fund the difference between federal and state financial aid and college tuition.

The application takes about five minutes to complete online at evolve502.org/scholarship. Once applications are submitted and reviewed, applicants will receive a follow-up email with next steps including completing the federal financial aid form and applying to eligible colleges.

In addition to the scholarship, Evolve502 is offering opportunity grants to support students whose families earn less than $40,000 annually. The opportunity grants are $1,000 per semester ($2,000 maximum per year) and can be used to assist in costs outside of tuition including healthcare, transportation, books and more. The grants will automatically be given to Evolve502 Scholarship recipients who meet qualifications.

The deadline to apply is June 30.

There’s more good news to share about Evolve502; The James Graham Brown Foundation gifts $3 million for Opportunity Grants for JCPS graduates. See links below for details:

Altar'd State, a women's clothing and accessories boutique at Oxmoor Center, is donating 10 percent of net proceeds every Monday to the Louisville Water Foundation.

Throughout the year, Altar'd State stores host Mission Mondays that "support organizations who feed the hungry, assist service men and women, boost self-esteem, love on those undergoing treatment and house the homeless."

The current fundraising effort, which lasts through July 5, is the first time the company has selected a water theme. Local employees chose the Louisville Water Foundation because of "the variety of projects it has supported in the past both locally and globally," said Mary Stone, a consultant for the Foundation.

Altar'd State hopes to raise $5,000 to $8,000 to support the Foundation's work. Store staff also donate four hours a month to community service, and Stone is connecting them to organizations that the Foundation has supported.

New forklift repair training at the Manufacturing Career Center prepares participants for jobs with starting pay up to $23 per hour

LOUISVILLE (May 27, 2020) - As vaccination numbers rise and the economy reopens, many workers who were negatively impacted by COVID-19 are rethinking their occupation. A Pew Research Center survey from earlier this year showed that 66% of American adults who were laid off or furloughed during the pandemic have seriously considered changing their field of work. Residents of the Louisville region who are interested in a new career path can take advantage of KentuckianaWorks’ selection of free training programs that lead to careers in manufacturing, technology, and construction.

The new Certified Forklift Technician training available at the Kentucky Manufacturing Career Center runs June 7-18 and will prepare participants for a career with starting pay of up to $23 per hour.

The training is primarily online, with two days of hands-on training with forklifts at the JCTC Tech Campus. Those who successfully complete the training will receive a certification and are guaranteed an interview with partner employers who are hiring for these positions as a paid co-op opportunity. Those who receive a co-op position will receive in-depth hands-on training provided by the employers. This is a great opportunity for anyone who has worked on cars as a job or a hobby, or who just likes fixing things.

“Manufacturing has a storied history in Louisville and a bright future, and we’re urging every resident interested in a new career to sign up for the free training program available through the Kentucky Manufacturing Career Center,” Mayor Greg Fischer said.

“Louisville is a logistics hub and forklifts are critical to most logistics operations,” said Brad Baker, President of Cardinal Carryor Inc. “Repairing forklifts is definitely a good and growing career with lots of opportunities in our region.”

Space is limited in the upcoming forklift repair training class. Participants must have a valid driver’s license and cannot have a felony on their record. To register or learn more, visit https://kentuckianaworks.org/forklift or call (502) 276-9711 ex. 4001.

In addition to the forklift repair training, KentuckianaWorks also offers pathways into construction and technology careers:

  • Kentuckiana Builds, which is run in partnership with the Louisville Urban League, has trained and placed hundreds of Louisvillians into jobs and apprenticeships in the booming construction field. Learn more at org/builds.
  • Code Louisville, which celebrated its 500th tech job placement late last year, helps participants get the skills and mentorship they need to break into the high-demand field of software development. Learn more at org
  • Tech Louisville prepares eligible residents of west, south, and central Louisville for a career in IT support. Graduates earn a Google IT Support Professional Certificate and are connected with local employers who need qualified tech workers. Learn more at org

All of these programs are offered free of charge. You can access KentuckianaWorks training courses as well as one-on-one career coaching and much more at kentuckianaworks.org or by calling (502) 388-3010.

Thousands of cyclists, paddlers and walkers will be on the move again at the Mayor’s Hike, Bike & Paddle Monday, May 31 as it returns for a 17th consecutive Memorial Day at Waterfront Park. All portions of the event have been reworked to ensure participants will be socially distanced.

T-shirts will be available for the first 2,000 participants.

The event also provides an opportunity for participants to get vaccinated. Appointments are not required and those wanting to receive the vaccine will only need to provide their name and date of birth. Proof of insurance is preferred, but not required in order to be vaccinated.

For hikers, this year features three routes, as the first option will travel along Waterfront Park to the Big Four Bridge and then back toward the Great Lawn. The second option is a 5K route traveling along Waterfront Park, over the Big Four Bridge to Indiana and back to the Great Lawn. The third option will accommodate hikers walking with their four-legged friends, traveling along Waterfront Park to the Louisville Community Boathouse to River Road and back to the Great Lawn.

The 15-mile bike route will take cyclists along Waterfront Park to Market Street past the new Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center. Cyclists will continue to Shawnee Park and back to the Great Lawn. Turnoffs will provide options for cycling routes as short as two miles on this closed-loop route secured by LMPD. There will be signage along the route.

Experienced cyclists will take off first at 9 a.m. The Louisville Bicycle Club and Scheller’s Fitness and Cycle are providing “bike captains” to help cyclists follow the rules of the road. The event will have rolling starts similar to Tour De Lou or the Derby Festival Mini Marathon.

The paddling activity features a new route as participants will start at the Community Boat House, and will go behind Tow Head Island, Waterfront Botanical Gardens and up Beargrass Creek.

Due to COVID, the event will not have Voyager Canoe rides or rentals from Harbor Lawn. Those features might be back for the Labor Day edition of Hike, Bike & Paddle.

Hike, bike and paddle maps are available online, https://louisvilleky.gov/government/city-events/mayors-hike-bike-and-paddle.

Starting at 8 a.m., the event will showcase demonstrations and group participation in Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba in socially distanced PODs on Waterfront’s South Great Lawn.

Participants are encouraged to bring water bottles, as there will be no refill station this year, but Coca-Cola will provide bottled refreshments upon completion of hike or bike activity.

LENS ALERT

l

In August 2016 Louisville Metro Emergency Services teamed up with Bullitt County, Oldham County, and Washington County to create a regional emergency notification system – Louisville Emergency Notification System (LENSAlert).  Its enhanced capabilities include using all communications modes to send alerts – mobile phones, landlines, email, text, social media, IPAWS-OPEN.  Take another step in being prepared for disasters and sign up for LENSAlert today.

In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
