On May 6, Mayor Greg Fischer signed an executive order directing all Louisville Metro Government (LMG) agencies and departments to prioritize the purchasing of electric and hybrid vehicles, green equipment and necessary infrastructure to support LMG’s transition to electric vehicles.
“Emissions from gas-powered vehicles are the second-largest source for greenhouse gas emissions in our city,” said Mayor Fischer. “We need to practice what we preach and lead by example. This executive order will move us toward electric vehicles, which will provide cost savings over time and improve environmental health.”
On-road transportation accounts for 12.8% of our greenhouse gas emissions in Louisville, or the equivalent of 2,749,767 tons of carbon dioxide. Reducing these emissions not only slows the impacts of climate change, but also reduces operating costs and other air pollutants, including ozone precursors, improves public health, and enhances the quality of life for residents. The Parkland neighborhood is one step closer to making the sustainable, community-driven green space called Parkland Plaza a reality. This past Saturday, the project partners and residents came together to clean up the site, currently a vacant parking lot, to prepare it for the build out. The team filled more than 25 bags with refuse and brush!
This project is a partnership between the Parkland Business and Development Association (PBDA), Community Foundation of Louisville, Center for Neighborhoods, 1200 LLC, TreesLouisville, and Louisville Metro. Each organization has contributed their funds, time, and expertise to bring us closer to the community's vision, and our progress could not have been achieved so far without everyone's dedication and collaboration.
Keep up with project updates at ParklandPlaza.com and from the PBDA Facebook page.
