Zoo offers Unique Way to Say "Be Mine"

Louisville Zoo
This Valentine’s Day the Louisville Zoo has a unique way to send a special message to loved ones and to help make a difference all at once. Now through February 10 you can save $15 on a special Valentine’s message package through the A.D.O.P.T.S. (Animals Depend on People To Survive) program.  A.D.O.P.T.S. participants partner with the Zoo in the care of the animals by “adopting” an animal of their choice for a full year. Funds received from the “adoptions” go directly toward the care and feeding of the amazing creatures in our care. The Louisville Zoo food budget for the animals is over $400,000 annually and as nutrition is a top priority this includes the highest grades of meat and the freshest of produce, along with hundreds of pounds of fish and other seafood.  As the Zoo’s collection grows, so does the food budget. Triton (21 year-old male California Sea lion) alone can eat nearly 50 pounds of fish a day.

The Lovebird Package $60.00 (regularly $75) includes an animal adoption certificate, a picture of the selected animal, the adoptive parent’s name on the Zoo website and a plush animal from the Zoo gift shop.

Animals with special Valentine’s Day messaging include the following:
Grizzly Bear - “I can’t bear to be without you!”
Brazilian Ocelot - “I love you an ocelot”
Amur (Siberian) Tiger - “You’re the purrr-fect Amur for me!”
Western Lowland Gorilla - “I go ape over you!”
African Lion - “I ain’t lion, you’re my Valentine!”
Wart Hog - “Hogs & kisses to you!”
Hissing Cockroach - “I’m your love bug”
African Elephant - “I could never forget you Valentine, I love you tons!”
Barn Owl - “Whooo’s your Valentine? ”
Hartmann’s Zebra - “It’s black & white, I love you Valentine!”
Rockhopper Penguin - “I waddle be your Valentine!”

A.D.O.P.T.S. packages are available year-round through the Zoo’s membership office or online at www.louisvillezoo.org/support/adopts .

The 1937 Louisvile Flood

The '37 Flood: Remarkable Stories

Seventy-five years ago, the city of Louisville was literally underwater. Dubbed “The Great Flood,” the flood of 1937 was Louisville’s worst natural disaster of the twentieth century. A panel discussion at the Main Library will highlight some of the extraordinary measures taken during the flood and discuss how Louisville recovered from the destruction left in its wake.  Join us for this commemorative event on February 7 at 7pm.  More details...

Job Showcase

Summer Jobs for Youth Feb. 18

The seventh annual Youth Opportunity Showcase gives teens and young adults, ages 16-21, a place to meet and talk with employers who will be hiring for summer jobs – including:

Zappos, BB&T, Belle of Louisville, Fifth Third Bank, Home Depot, Home Instead, YMCA, Metro Parks and Sodexo. Job seekers can apply for jobs that day, as well as learn about the SummerWorks program, internships and volunteer opportunities. Representatives from local colleges, universities and career training programs will be available to help with career planning.

The showcase is Saturday, Feb. 18, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kentucky International Convention Center, Exhibit Hall 1 A/B, 221 S. Fourth St. The event is free to employers, as well as job seekers. Last year, more than 2,000 young people attended.

Young adults interested in applying for jobs should dress for an interview, bring identification – preferably a driver’s license and Social Security card – and have several copies of their resume.

This year, the KentuckianaWorks Youth Career Center and its partners are offering a free Workforce Education Training workshop to prepare youth for the job search. The two-hour workshop provides tips on dressing for success, completing a job application, communicating their transferrable skills on a resume and preparing for a job interview.

The showcase is sponsored by KentuckianaWorks, the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training and Louisville Metro Government.
