A Message on Garage Burglaries from 7th Div. LMPD Commander McKinley

We have seen several garage burglaries recently. They are spread all over the 7^th – no specific district. With the warm weather, people are leaving their garages open all day/night. This provides an easy opportunity for people looking to steal to take various items from garages. It also provides easy access to the home if the garage is attached. If you all get a chance, please communicate this with your constituents. I have asked officers to remind the community to close their garages, especially overnight, as they are on patrol. Also, a reminder to keep record of serial numbers of expensive equipment/tools/firearms would be great. This information in vital in locating and identifying stolen property.

BBB PR: How to Deal with a Data Breach and Prevent One

April 13, 2021 – Recently, information from 533 million Facebook users across the world and 500 million LinkedIn user profiles were leaked. The leaked data could be used by criminals and scammers to commit identity fraud. In light of these massive data breaches (and others), BBB serving Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Western Kentucky has suggestions for consumers who are concerned their information may have been leaked or compromised:

• Don’t panic. First and foremost, stay calm.
• File a police report.
• Check with the breached company directly for updates. Do NOT click on a link from an email or text message regarding the breach. It could be a scam.
• Put a fraud alert and/or credit freeze on your credit reports.  A credit freeze will prevent anyone from accessing your credit report or scores. A fraud alert flags your account but does not automatically stop new credit from being opened in your name. 
• Request a 90-day fraud alert: If your Social Security number was stolen in a breach, ask the credit bureaus to put a note on your file so creditors know to further verify the identity of any individual who attempts to open new accounts or take other actions under your name. Notify one of the three major bureaus — Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion, and it will tell the others.
• Check your credit report for any suspicious activity. You can check it for free up to three times a year (once for each credit reporting agency) at AnnualCreditReport.com.
• If your credit card has been breached: Monitor your credit card statements online (do not wait for paper statements). If you see a fraudulent charge, report it to the card issuer immediately. Keep receipts in case you need to prove which charges you authorized and which ones you did not.
• If your debit card has been breached: Do all the above as for credit cards but pay very close attention to your account. Debit cards do not have the same protections as credit cards. Contact your bank for more information, or if you want to pre-emptively request a new debit card.
• Change and strengthen your online logins and passwords especially if several of your accounts have the same logins and passwords.

Here are some additional tips on how to prevent a data breach.

• Create complex passwords. Use different ones for each account.
• Use multi-factor authentication. This allows access only after two or more pieces of evidence are presented—usually a password and a code that is sent to the user by phone, text, or email during login.
• Shop with a credit card. You may have less liability for fraudulent credit card charges, but you may be responsible for more some of the charges if you use your debit card. Check with your bank.
• Watch for fraud. If you receive a notice about the data breach, call the company to confirm that it's legitimate, using a number you know to be valid rather than a number that may be listed on the notice.
• Set up account alerts. You may be able to receive notifications of suspicious purchases or those that exceed a certain dollar amount. This may give you a heads-up that you've been hacked.
