Why is recycling electronics important?

1. Electronic devices are a rich source of raw materials – like gold!
2. They also contain toxic substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium, so proper disposal is essential to ensure these materials are not released into the environment.
3. The electronics industry has grown tremendously while product life cycles have shortened. With so many devices to dispose, electronics recycling programs are important and available.
4. Local ordinance states that electronic waste may not be set out for collection within the Urban Services District (LMCO 51.405 (2))

Getting vaccinated is one more tool each of us can use to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Once you’ve been vaccinated, you have the upper hand against the virus, because it means that even if you are exposed, you’ll be okay.  Getting most people in our community vaccinated will allow us to get back to travelling, attending birthday parties, baby showers, full attendance at sporting events, visiting and hugging grandparents…reclaiming all those moments we missed last year. Monday UofL Health opened its mass vaccination site at Cardinal Stadium. 4,000 vaccinations can be provided there each day. They have many available appointments. The 24-lane drive-thru site is now open. Appointments are available for anyone ages 16+ by going to www.UofLHealth.org  or calling 681-1435. Louisville Free Public Library announces plans for new Children’s Bookmobile

Mayor Greg Fischer on Tuesday joined members of the Louisville Free Public Library, The Library Foundation, and JBS Louisville to announce that Louisville is getting a new Children's Bookmobile, thanks to some generous donors. The purchase of a new bookmobile comes at a critical juncture in Louisville. Only 35 percent of Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) fourth graders score at or above proficient in reading. Two out of every five JCPS students are facing housing insecurity. Meanwhile, more than 10 percent of students have struggled to access educational resources via remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has also highlighted disparities in access to the library’s resources for families without reliable transportation or dedicated internet in the home. When furnished, this new mobile library will visit daycares, YMCA programs, community centers, and faith-based organizations, as well as parks, block parties, and more—delivering not only books, but also library storytimes, sensory experiences, and innovative programming to under-resourced communities. The vehicle will also be equipped with computers and free, accessible Wi-Fi. The Bookmobile project was made possible by a generous donation from Eleemosynary by LMH Foundation, which challenged area donors and organizations to match funds. JBS more than answered that call donating $145,000 toward the purchase of the vehicle. To date, The Library Foundation has raised $257,500 to fund the project. “We are proud to partner with others in our community to make this meaningful impact for children in Louisville,” said Pete Charboneau, general manager, JBS Louisville. “Investing in future generations is something we believe in, and we look forward to seeing the positive impacts the bookmobile will have. Through our Hometown Strong initiative, we are contributing $1.2 million in the Louisville area.” While the funding goal has been reached to purchase the new Children’s Bookmobile, fundraising is ongoing as The Library Foundation looks to raise another $50,000 to outfit the vehicle with books and technology. April 30 - Deadline for submission of proposals for temporary art projects in LFPL branches

The Louisville Free Public Library and the city’s Commission on Public Art (COPA) are now accepting proposals to commission five new temporary artworks in Louisville's public libraries.  Proposals are now being accepted for the Iroquois, Newburg, Shawnee, Portland and Fairdale branches.

This opportunity is open to any artist in Louisville/Jefferson County, and any artistic discipline—including visual art, installation, performance, spoken word, event-based, and media art. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply and artists may apply as an individual or as a team.

Champions Trace Lane closed through early May for bridge replacement 

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has closed the bridge on Champions Trace Lane (CR 1021) over the South Fork of Bear Grass Creek. The closure began the week of April 5 to replace the structure and is scheduled to be closed for 30 days. Detour signs will be posted.

Cat of the Week: Dusty Dusty is a mature cat waiting for the purrfect person to spring him from the shelter. It’s always free to adopt adult cats with an approved application, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Dusty is an approximately four-year-old gray and white cat with the most gorgeous eyes. Dog of the week: Mosh Pit Life is one big party for Mosh Pit, an approximately one-year-old Black Mouth Cur mix. The sweet, wiggly and friendly dog’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Mosh Pit, who weighs about 40 pounds, is already spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. Mosh Pit has been friendly with other shelter dogs and can be tested with potential fur siblings by request. A meet-and-greet is mandatory for families with children. April 20 - Property Reassessment informational meeting

Our online community meetings about the 2021 Jefferson County PVA assessments have been so successful we added one additional meeting. The community-wide meeting will be on Zoom on April 20 at 6:30 p.m. This meeting will not be area-specific, rather for all areas being reassessed in 2021. 

The role of the PVA is to fairly assess the value of all property. This is an important part of the process to determine the taxes collected to fund our cities, school districts, and emergency services. 

The first step of the appeals process in 2021 is available from April 23rd to May 17th. The notices will be mailed on April 23. 

The detail of the map at right shows District 10 residential reassessment areas in blue, Area 2 and Area 7 to the lower right.  If you are a residential property owner in areas 2, 3, 5, and 7, your property will be reassessed this year. Whittenberg Scholarship applications open for young artists pursuing a professional career in the performing arts

The William Tolbert Whittenberg Scholarship for Performing Arts Excellence awards young artists (ages 16-22) from the Greater Louisville region up to $10,000 to pursue advanced study in the performing arts. To be eligible for the 2021 Whittenberg Scholarship, applications must: be from the Greater Louisville Region, between the ages of 16 and 22, and plan to pursue a professional career in the performing arts.

Special open enrollment period underway for health insurance through May 15

HealthCare.gov is open now through May 15. During this special enrollment period, all Americans have an opportunity to sign up for healthcare. For free, local help available to anyone enrolling in health insurance, Kentuckians should visit kynect.ky.gov to find a kynector near them. Kentuckians enrolling in a plan on HealthCare.gov are guaranteed to receive comprehensive coverage, without being denied care or charged more due to a pre-existing condition. All plans cover essential benefits, including doctor and hospital visits, prescription drugs, mental health treatment, and maternity care. In addition, Kentuckians with Qualified Health Plans also receive free preventive care services, such as immunizations and health screenings. Testing and treatment of COVID-19 are considered essential health benefits and are covered by all HealthCare.gov plans. Kentuckians should avoid insurance plans offered outside of HealthCare.gov that seem too good to be true. “Junk insurance” products pose huge financial risks to consumers. These products can refuse to pay for care for pre-existing conditions, charge consumers more based on their gender, and impose annual coverage limits. Free tax help

Free federal and state income tax preparation is now available for eligible residents. The Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, and AARP Tax Aide programs provide trained, IRS-certified volunteers to offer free tax services via online or at select drop-off sites. The service is available to individuals and families who earned less than $66,000 in 2020. Learn more.

Impacted by COVID-19? LG&E account past due? ACM might be able to help!

The Association of Community Ministries (ACM) and its 13 neighborhood-based member organizations, in collaboration with Metro Government’s Office of Resilience and Community Services, are working to get millions of dollars in Metro COVID-19 Utility Relief Funds to our neighbors struggling with outstanding LG&E account balances.

ACM has streamlined the intake process with a new centralized portal that allows Jefferson County applicants to pre-screen and apply for assistance by answering a few questions on a mobile device, computer, or tablet. A Community Ministries' representative will contact the applicant within a week to complete the process.

The Association of Community Ministries has worked with partners at Metro Government to extend the time period of applicable past due balances covered to March 16, 2020 - March 3, 2021, and to increase the maximum benefit from $500 to $1,000.

As a result, LG&E customers who have already received assistance through this program may be eligible to receive additional help up to the $1,000 threshold and are encouraged to reapply.

TreesLouisville's Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program continues

Thanks to a generous grant from the Louisville Metro Department of Parks & Recreation, TreesLouisville is excited to announce another round of its Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program! Since nearly 70 percent of available planting space in Jefferson County is privately owned, planting a tree at home is one of the best and easiest ways you can help expand our community tree canopy and grow a greener, healthier neighborhood. To participate, purchase and plant an eligible shade tree on your residential property and apply to receive $30 back on up to three trees. This program is open to residents of Jefferson County, KY on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds have been claimed. Evolve502 Scholarships available - apply by June 30

JCPS seniors can go to college for free through a new scholarship offered by Evolve502. The scholarship, which launched Oct. 1, allows eligible students in the Class of 2021 to begin postsecondary studies tuition-free at any Kentucky Community and Technical College school, including Jefferson Community and Technical College, or Simmons College of Kentucky to pursue an associate degree or career credential, or take 60 hours of credit. The Evolve502 scholarship is a last dollar scholarship, meaning Evolve502 will fund the difference between federal and state financial aid and college tuition. The application takes about five minutes to complete online at evolve502.org/scholarship. Once applications are submitted and reviewed, applicants will receive a follow-up email with next steps including completing the federal financial aid form and applying to eligible colleges. In addition to the scholarship, Evolve502 is offering opportunity grants to support students whose families earn less than $40,000 annually. The opportunity grants are $1,000 per semester ($2,000 maximum per year) and can be used to assist in costs outside of tuition including healthcare, transportation, books and more. The grants will automatically be given to Evolve502 Scholarship recipients who meet qualifications. The deadline to apply is June 30.

Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under a new Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD. For more information, click here, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

The Louisville Water Foundation works with community agencies to help customers keep their water turned on. Drops of Kindness offers residential and business customers help with resolving unpaid bills and reducing future financial obligations. If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

The final Kentucky Public Service Commission public meeting to provide information on and receive public comments regarding Louisville Gas & Electric and Kentucky Utilities rate cases (2020-00350 & 2020-00349). The meeting is being conducted virtually due to the continuing COVID-19 state of emergency. Each session will begin with a brief overview from PSC staff on the key elements in the case followed by public comments.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. A new interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips. The Louisville Metro Police Department is providing MetroSWAP Zones outside of some Division offices. There is 24 hour video surveillance. LMPD recommends: Agree to meet the person ONLY at a MetroSWAP station. Meet only during daylight hours. Tell someone you trust where you are meeting and at what time. Meet in the parking lot. There will be two designated parking spots at each location for use. Make this interaction brief and to the point. RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
