SummerWorks 2021

Do you know a young person (ages 16-21) interested in finding a summer job that aligns with his or her interests and experiences? If so, the SummerWorks program is a great place to start. Kids can learn of local job opportunities, get help with their resumes, receive advice on financial management, and more. Railroad Quiet Zone- Safety Measures

In order to comply with the Federal guidelines and qualify as a railroad Quiet Zone, additional safety measures need to be constructed to minimize the risk to the public at the railroad crossing.  To reduce the risk, Public Works will be installing plastic post delineators along S 28^th St within 100’ of the railroad crossing.  These post are required to be provided to prevent motorists from trying to drive around the railroad crossing gates, thus reducing risk, and qualifying for a quiet zone.  This is the last step of the quiet zone process and with the addition of these posts, the S 25^th St, Wilson Ave, S 28^th St, Catalpa St and Woodland Ave crossings will all be quiet on or around May 3, 2021.

Centerstone 2021 Community Champions

Centerstone is asking all community members to consider nominating a person or organization for the 2021 Centerstone Community Champions Awards. The Community Champions Award was created to recognize those in the community who have: Shown tremendous compassion and understanding of those experiencing mental illness and/or substance use disorder Heightened community awareness about the stigma around mental health and/or substance use disorder Taken significant action to improve the quality of life for those in our community living with mental illness and/or substance use disorder *We only recognize nominations for people in the communities in which we serve (regions of Metro East and Southern Illinois). We do not accept nominations for Centerstone staff because we already know how much they do for this community and we provide internal recognition. How to purchase vacant or abandoned property in Louisville Have you ever thought about buying a vacant or abandoned property in Louisville? The city has many vacant or abandoned lots and buildings for sale at all times. If you’re a contractor or fixer-upper, you might consider buying an abandoned home to rehab. Once you fix it up, you could live in it or sell it for a profit. Or you may want to buy a vacant lot or a property in need of demolition, and build a new home. Other properties are suitable for starting a community garden or other agricultural project. To manage the sale of vacant or abandoned properties, the city has a program called The Landbank Authority. The program’s goal is to put these properties back into productive use. The Landbank currently has about 500 properties available for sale and some are available for as little as $1. But in order to purchase properties, you must be able to prove to the Landbank that you can pay to refurbish or demolish the property, and you must complete the project within a set deadline. Choose Lots to view empty lots for sale and an explanation of the types of programs, including “Adjacent Side Yard”; “Cut It, Keep It”; “New Construction”; and “Agricultural Projects”. Choose Structures to see a list of vacant houses and other buildings for sale. Landbank has two categories for the sale of structures: “Save the Structure” and “Demo for Deed”. To save a structure, you must prove you have funds to rehab it and you must complete renovations within six months for exterior and 18 months for interior renovations. To buy a "Demo for Deed," you must simply prove you have funds to demolish the property. Both the Lots and Structures pages have links and instructions to apply for purchase when you’re ready. Speaking of funds, that’s where we come in. At LHOME, we can’t help you purchase a property but we can help you renovate one. Qualified property owners can borrow up to $30,000 for 12 months, paying only interest on the loan. After the year is up, you can sell your renovated property or refinance it. Lojic lets you search by address for a specific property you want to know more about. Concrete Replacement Project Beginning on I-265 in Jefferson County April 9

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 6, 2021) –The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 Office advises motorists of a pavement repair project scheduled to begin this week on I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) in Jefferson County. KYTC contractors will be patching and replacing sections of the pavement on the interstate from the Billtown Road interchange (mile marker 18.8) to the Taylorsville Road interchange (mile marker 23.3). Multiple overnight and weekend ramp and lane closures will take place as part of the work. The first closures will take place this weekend. Between 8 p.m. on Friday, April 9, and 5 a.m. on Monday, April 12, the left lane of I-265 South from mile marker 18.8 to mile marker 23.3 will be closed. The ramp from Taylorsville Road to I-265 South will also be closed during this time. Motorists can detour by taking I-265 North to I-64 East (Exit 25A) and reconnecting to I-265 South. This project was awarded to Mac Construction & Excavating, Inc. in September 2020 in the amount of $3,487,000.00. Work is scheduled to be complete by early fall. Clean Collaborative Crew - Weekly Report-March 29th-April 3

The Crew of 13 staff members and their equipment, fall under our Bulk Waste Department within the Solid Waste Management Services Division. They are primarily tasked with collecting litter and debris along Metro roadways.

Below is the weekly update on the Clean Collaborative Crew’s actions from March 29, 2021, to April 03, 2021. The crew cleaned approximately 125.6 curb miles and collected 568 Bags, 170 Tires, and 117 Other Items. Other items includes everything from vehicle wreckage to illegally dumped items. The weight from March 29th to April 2nd totaled 37,680 pounds.

Out of all the waste that goes to our local landfill every year, 26% could have been composted instead! Backyard composting reduces your family's greenhouse gas impact and creates a valuable soil amendment for your garden or flower bed. Paving & and road work for the week of April 12

Below is the list of Louisville Metro Public Works paving projects scheduled for the week of April 12, 2021. The schedule is subject to change due to weather and/or operational factors. Lower Hunters Trace from Dixie Highway to Cane Run Rd – Please note that it is anticipated that work commencing next Tuesday and Wednesday on this roadway will require the roadway to be closed from 9AM to 3PM. Emergency services and JCPS will be notified of the anticipated closures. Site work Blevins Gap from Stonestreet Rd to Medora Rd.

Pets of the Week

Cat of the Week: Fluffball is a scaredy paws whose ready to purr goodbye to the shelter life that frightens him. The handsome 3-year-old Tabby’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter. It’s always free to adopt adult cats from LMAS, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Fluffball is already neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. He weighs about 11lbs. To meet or adopt Fluffball, visit Animal House Adoption Center located at 3516 Newburg Road from 12-6pm daily. No appointment is required. For more info about Fluffball, call 502-473-PETS.

Dog of the Week: Salt Water Taffy’s adoption bio is short and sweet, just like him. The approximately 2-year-old Pit Bull is a very friendly, happy and silly dog who loves socializing with people and other dogs. Salt Water Taffy’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter thanks to the Pay It Forward Program.  He’s already neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Salt Water Taffy weighs 57lbs. He can be tested with other dogs, cats, or children by request. To meet or adopt Salt Water Taffy, visit Animal House Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Rd.) from 12-6pm daily. Walk-ins Welcome.
