Free Trees

TreesLouisville’s Community Canopy Program is back thanks to a generous donation from The LG&E and KU Foundation! We have partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to provide Louisville residents with over 650 FREE 1 gallon trees. There are a variety of large and small species to choose from depending on the space you have available, but don’t wait to register, these trees won’t last long! Register online at www.arborday.org/treeslouisville; your tree will be delivered straight to your home between March and May 2021.  Species Available: Black Tupelo, Eastern Redbud, Swamp White Oak, Sweetbay Magnolia, Sweetgum, & Tulip Poplar All trees will be delivered in 1 gallon containers If you live in an area with low canopy coverage you can request more than one tree. Two-Way Street Conversion

Neighborhood Safety Improvement Project

Louisville Metro Council allocated $1 million in the Fiscal Year 2021 budget for safety improvements to Louisville's one-way streets, with a focus on streets in West Louisville. Chestnut Street/River Park Drive and Muhammad Ali Blvd were identified as priority corridors for these safety improvements.

A virtual community meeting was held on February 17, 2021 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the issues facing these two corridors and potential solutions. Information from the meeting, including the presentation and a recording, is available below.

Louisville Xtreme Professional Indoor Football Team to Play at KFC Yum! Center

Louisville, KY (February 22, 2021) –  The KFC Yum! Center and Indoor Football League's (IFL) Louisville Xtreme Football team announced partnership details at a press conference this morning. The three-year rental lease agreement between Louisville Xtreme and the venue's operator, ASM Global, includes eight home games at the KFC Yum! Center between April and August 2021. 

"We are elated to be playing in the KFC Yum! Center," Louisville Xtreme Football General Manager Victor Cole said. "The KFC Yum! Center will not only give our fans the best possible indoor football experience, but also the safest way to watch games in person with their highly effective VenueShield program." 

For the safety of KFC Yum! Center and team employees and guests, capacity will be limited at each game and ASM Global staff have implemented VenueShield, an exclusive, globally recognized program developed in partnership with leading medical professionals and industry experts that provides enhanced safety protocols. These include increased disinfectant cleaning, temperature screenings, mandatory face coverings, physical distancing, hand sanitizer stations and more. 

"We are so pleased that Louisville Xtreme Football team will call the KFC Yum! Center home," ASM Global General Manager Eric Granger said. "ASM Global is committed to bringing new entertainment options for the Louisville region, and the Louisville Xtreme is dedicated to providing fun and engaging experiences for fans. Season memberships are available now for the team's home games. Individual tickets will go on sale at a later date, pending availability. This season's Louisville Xtreme Football home games include:

The Indoor Football League is America’s longest continuously-running indoor football league and begins its 13th consecutive season of play in 2021. The IFL began play in 2009 following a merger between the United Indoor Football League and the Intense Football League. IFL teams will play a 16-game schedule in 2021 with each team having eight home games and eight road games. The regular season runs from April through August, with playoffs running throughout August.

The Works Week

Pop-Up Drop-Offs are free recycling and large item disposal events for residents of Jefferson County. Through a partnership between the Department of Public Works, the Waste Management District, and Metro Council, these events are held monthly, March through November, at various locations. The first event of 2021 is on Saturday, March 27, 10am-2pm at the Sun Valley Ball Field Complex. Residents can have documents shredded, recycle electronics, tires, and scrap metal, dispose of prescription medication and bulky items, and compost yard debris. Items must be separated into those various categories for easy off-loading at each area. Limitations and guidelines are found at Louisvilleky.gov/PopUps.  The goal is to give all Jefferson County residents opportunities to dispose of unwanted items properly and to keep as much material out of the landfill as possible.  Future events will be announced and are posted on the Recycle Coach app calendar. You can also recycle up to three electronic devices, up to four tires, and dispose of up to three large household items for free year-round at the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue.

Yard Waste Collection by Request Only

Every winter, yard waste collection in the Urban Services District is done BY REQUEST ONLY. The service is still available, but since the amount of yard waste generated is far less in the winter, it is more efficient to only collect when needed. How to Make a Request  Call Metro311 at 311 or 574-5000 or email metro.311@louisvilleky.gov.  Be prepared with the following information or include in your email: ​First and last name, address, phone number, set out location (front, rear, side, alley, etc.), and approximate number of containers, bags, or bundles. Your appointment will be scheduled on your regular collection day THE FOLLOWING WEEK. (Example: If your regular yard waste collection day is Thursday, and your request is made on Monday, February 8, your yard waste will not be collected until Thursday, February 18.)  Set out yard waste no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before your appointment and no later than 6 a.m. the day of your appointment. Be sure to follow the collection guidelines. Regular weekly yard waste collection without requests will resume the week of April 5.

Metro Animal Services Scam

A Louisville resident thought he called Metro Animal Control, but instead got a message telling him that they charged $99, and instructed him to leave his credit card number on the telephone answering machine.  A Metro Council office contacted Adam Hamilton from Metro Animal Control, and received the following message from him. We don’t charge but there is a company that has popped up that calls themselves Louisville Animal Control and their phone number is one off of our number. We have been receiving a lot of complaints about charging people but it is that company. If you want to, let your constituents know to call Metro Animal Services at 473-7387 or email us at animals@louisvilleky.gov.  The only time we will ask someone to pay is if they are surrendering their own pet. CAUTION: NEVER leave any personal information on an answering machine.

Pets of the Week

Dog of the week: Taylor’s nickname should be ‘Ms. Congeniality’ because she’s such a friendly dog. The approximately 5-year-old Pit Bull mix gets along great with people. Maybe it’s because she loves attention. Taylor’s a sweet, playful and affectionate dog who won’t turn a down a stroll on a cold, snow day. She walks well on-leash and enjoys bird watching. Her adorable ears perk up at the sound of critters in the park. Taylor’s a good co-pilot and well-behaved during shopping trips. At home, her favorite spot is on top of a nice, cozy bed - but she prefers the kind where humans sleep! Taylor’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter. Taylor’s already spayed, microchipped and vaccinated. She weighs about 60lbs. Taylor is extremely dog friendly and a great playmate to other shelter dogs. Puppy of the week: Life is one big adventure for Marco Polo. The five-month-old Boxer mix is a sweet, wiggly and playful puppy who weighs about 45lbs. Crime Mapping

First Division

Major Jim Cirillo James Cirillo started in law enforcement with the Louisville Metro Police Department in January 2001 as a patrol officer.  He then moved up to patrol sergeant, detective sergeant, Technology Services Lieutenant and Special Response Team Commander. He is currently assigned as Commander of the 1st Division.  He has a bachelor of arts degree in Criminal Justice from American Military University, an associate degree in Fire Technology and Administration from Capitol Community College as well as a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officers Course.   He is a seven-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Shannon Lauder Major Shannon Lauder joined the Louisville Metro Police Department in 2008. She served as a patrol officer in the 4th Division, primarily in the Old Louisville neighborhood. She also spent 6 years as a hostage negotiator and team leader for LMPD’s Hostage Negotiation Team. She was a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit (CACU) investigating physical, sexual and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. She was then promoted to sergeant in 2015, where she served in the 6th Division before becoming a Professional Standards Unit investigator. She was promoted to lieutenant in 2018 and served as a patrol lieutenant in the 4th Division. Most recently she was assigned as the Commander of the Special Victims Unit. The SVU consists of the Sex Crimes Unit, the Domestic Violence Unit and the Crimes Against Seniors Unit. In 2020 Major Lauder was promoted to the rank of Major and serves as the Commander of the 4th Division. Major Lauder holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Political Science from the University of Kentucky and is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. She is a graduate of the 143rd Session of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville.
